We told you the San Francisco Giants bullpen was better than what they showed in the first month of the season. In a dramatic turnaround, the SF Giants' bullpen has a 2.92 ERA in the month of May, second-best in the National League. The Giants have gone with bullpen games in two of the last four contests, and they've allowed a total of one run in those 18 innings. Sean Manaea has pitched five innings in those two games, with a strikeout rate north of 50%. On the offensive side, who else but Michael Conforto? He went 4-for-4 with a walk and a homer as the SF Giants cruised to a victory over Milwaukee. LaMonte Wade Jr. had three hits, and the rookies, Casey Schmitt and Patrick Bailey, also came up with nice nights offensively. It was notable that Brandon Crawford sat for the second time in three days against a right-handed pitcher. His struggles at the plate and in the field have been an issue, and Schmitt may begin to take over as the primary shortstop given his play. Finally, with respect to the Giants' defense, they rebounded from an ugly defensive game in the finale in Minnesota to play great defense in last night's win. Mike Yastrzemski robbed Darin Ruf of a home run, J.D. Davis made a nice barehanded play on a ground ball, and just in general, despite leading the league in errors (apparently), they have actually been a good defensive team by the more advanced metrics. Simply by watching the games we should be able to tell that they've been much better defensively than they were last season. The San Francisco Giants already made one high-profile extension during the 2023 season, agreeing to terms on a deal with Logan Webb that tacked on three more years to the three years he was already under club control. When it comes to J.D. Davis, LaMonte Wade Jr., and Thairo Estrada, should the Giants consider doing the same thing? One day after a dramatic comeback win, the San Francisco Giants played extremely ugly baseball in a loss to the Twins in the series finale. It all began in the first inning, when the SF Giants had things set up beautifully against Joe Ryan, who's been one of the game's best pitchers this season. The Giants had runners on second and third with nobody out, but they were unable to score. That type of situation came up again and again, and the SF Giants were consistently unable to capitalize. The Giants also had major defensive issues in the loss. Michael Conforto let a ball sail over his head. Blake Sabol had a costly passed ball. Brandon Crawford clanked two easily catchable balls, one a throw from Sabol and one a routine grounder that should've ended an inning. Brett Wisely also let a routine ground ball go right through him. What is the level of concern with Crawford? He's not hitting at all (although he did have a good offensive game today), but he also looks very much not like himself on defense. And what can the SF Giants do with Craw if they determine he's simply no longer their best option at short? The San Francisco Giants looked like they were on their way to a huge game, scoring four runs four batters into their game last night against the Twins. But those would be the only runs the SF Giants would score. However, it didn't ultimately matter, as the Giants' pitching—in a bullpen game—made those runs hold up. Michael Conforto had the big swing for the Giants in the first, as he hit a three-run homer following LaMonate Wade Jr.'s leadoff walk (what else is new?), Mike Yastrzemski's walk, and J.D. Davis' double. John Brebbia, Sean Manaea, Tristan Beck, Tyler Rogers, and Scott Alexander held the Twins to one run in nine innings of work. Manaea's outing stands out in particular. He's struggled mightily as a Giant, but he was overpowering when he was in the strike zone, racking up eight strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Beck was also impressive over 2.2 innings but did allow a solo homer. The SF Giants' youth movement, headlined by Casey Schmitt and Pat Bailey, is exciting. But is Schmitt chasing too much? Schmitt is literally swinging at half of all pitches out of the strike zone, and his overall swing rate is the highest in MLB (min. 50 PA). Will he be able to sustain success with these kinds of rates? It's definitely something to monitor going forward, and it is at the very least some cause for concern. Are you not entertained? Patrick Bailey, the San Francisco Giants' first-round pick in 2020, had a weekend to remember. He singled and homered as he helped lead the SF Giants to a series win over the Marlins. He also did a great job behind the plate, showing off his skills as a framer. Casey Schmitt, likewise, continued to display his plus defense and ability to put the bat on the ball and make good things happen. The youth movement has a chance to continue as well, with top Giants prospects Kyle Harrison and Luis Matos in Triple-A. Matos is not far removed from being ranked No. 35 on FanGraphs' Top 100 prospects list, but a down 2022 season moved him off their 2023 list completely. However, Matos has rebounded in a major way, starting the season in Double-A, a level higher than he'd ever played before, and quickly earning a promotion to Sacramento. In a handful of games for the River Cats, Matos has continued to hit and defend. He appears very close to MLB ready and could be an option at any moment. Alex Wood was once again frustrated about being pulled in the fifth inning, but once again it was a completely defensible time for San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler to take him out. Logan Webb has been pitching great and lowered his ERA to 2.90, but came out with low back tightness. Webb and the Giants expect him to be okay. Finally, the SF Giants will reunite with Carlos Correa tonight as they head to Minnesota to take on the Twins. The San Francisco Giants are making moves! A little more than a week ago, Casey Schmitt was promoted to the majors, and his performance to date has been nothing short of exciting. Today, the SF Giants announced that they've promoted their 2020 first-round selection Patrick Bailey, a catcher, and right-handed reliever Ryan Walker to the major league team. Joey Bart went on the IL with a groin injury, and Ross Stripling went on the IL with a low back strain. Cal Stevenson was DFA'd and Heliot Ramos was placed on the 60-day IL with an oblique injury. Bailey has a chance to stick on the MLB roster. Bart simply hasn't hit enough since making his debut in 2020 to feel too comfortable about his position on the roster. While he's made strides both at the plate and behind it, his free-swinging ways are not valued by this front office, while Bailey is far more of a patient hitter who fits the mold of what Farhan Zaidi and company like. Blake Sabol has also done quite well as a hitter (and he has that patience/power approach that the SF Giants like), so it's entirely possible that if Bailey performs well offensively while Bart is on the IL, that Bart is optioned to Sacramento. This is assuming that Bailey performs well defensively, and Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area has reported on multiple occasions that several Giants officials believed Bailey was their best defensive catcher in MLB camp this year. San Francsico Giants third baseman J.D. Davis is having a breakout season. Meanwhile, Giants rookie Casey Schmitt has taken the league by storm in his first week-plus in the majors. SF Giants legendary shortstop Brandon Crawford is off to a slow start following a disappointing 2022, and this year's upcoming free agent class is light on shortstops. For the Giants, the writing is sort of on the wall. If Davis continues to play like has has through the first quarter of the season, it's hard to imagine the SF Giants doing anything but continuing to play him at third nearly every day. Davis could always hit, but he's broken out defensively. Schmitt, meanwhile, is a natural third baseman but has proven to be a capable shortstop, and he has somewhat indisputably the best throwing arm among MLB infielders already. The San Francisco Giants are 5-1 against last year's World Series representatives. The Giants won two of three from the defending champion Astros, and they just swept the Phillies out of town. These games against the Phillies weren't easy, but the bullpen absolutely held strong and the SF Giants singled Philadelphia to death. The SF Giants had 21 hits in these last two games, and 20 of them were singles. The Giants' only extra-base hit was a popup that was lost in the twilight. Ross Stripling looked much better in his start today before things unraveled in the fourth, and he had to come out with low back tightness. But the SF Giants' four-run first and a late rally, coupled with strong work from the 'pen for the second straight day (after Alex Cobb had a short start) led to two more victories. In other news, top Giants prospect Luis Matos was promoted to Triple-A. He was doing fantastic in Double-A, and this is a great development for a player who is about a year removed from being a somewhat consensus Top 50 prospect. Matos is only 21 years old and is a righty outfielder. The San Francsico Giants badly needed a win, and they got one thanks to a big six-run second inning. Michael Conforto continued his torrid week, hitting a three-run homer that turned a one-run deficit into a two-run lead. And the SF Giants kept adding on, with key hits from the likes of Mitch Haniger and Brandon Crawford, both of whom failed to deliver with the bases loaded in the first inning. Alex Wood was good in his first start since coming off the IL with a hamstring injury. He surrendered a two-run homer in the second inning, but other than that he was fairly sharp and his stuff was good. There was some controversy, however, when Gabe Kapler pulled Wood after 4.2 innings, one out away from qualifying for a win. But this is a non-story, a non-controversy. Wood was on a strict pitch count since he's coming off the IL. He knew about it before the game, and he had already exceeded his pitch limit. Under other circumstances, perhaps let him get a shot to finish the fifth. But in this case, it was an easy call and shouldn't be controversial whatsoever. The SF Giants continued to play pretty good defense. Bryce Johnson, Casey Schmitt, and J.D. Davis made very nice and important plays at various points in the game. Schmitt also had a couple more hits including a double. Also, before the game, the Giants made a couple of roster moves, putting Joc Pederson on the IL with a hand contusion after he was hit by a pitch in Arizona. In a corresponding move, Mike Yastrzemski made a sooner-than-expected return to the active roster after injuring his hamstring in Mexico City. The San Francisco Giants continue to find ways to lose. They frequently jump out to early leads, but their NL-worst bullpen has coughed up those leads on multiple occasions. John Brebbia served as an opener and pitched a clean inning, and the Giants jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Ross Stripling's absolutely miserable season continued to he gave the lead right back. They get brilliant outings from Anthony DeSclafani and Logan Webb, but on those days the offense can't provide enough run support. Indeed, the SF Giants are just stuck in a miserable rut of losing, and it's been going on ever since a 13-5 start to the 2022 season. There are reasons for optimism, however. They have several pitchers and position players performing at a very high level (Webb, Alex Cobb, DeSclafani, Thairo Estrada, LaMonte Wade Jr., J.D. Davis). Literally all of their free-agent signings from this offseason have track records of being at least average and often much better than that, and they're all performing well below their career numbers. Career numbers matter more when projecting forward than six weeks of a season. But the Giants' position in the standings is not good, and they need to start winning some games—soon. They face a team in the Phillies that will likely end up in wild card territory starting tonight, so it's important for the Giants to have a good series. It's hard not to get excited about Casey Schmitt. Just three games into the young San Francisco Giant's big league career, he has amassed eight hits, including two homers and a double, tying Willie McCovey for the most hits in a Giants player's first three MLB games. Schmitt had all of his tools on display in last night 6-2 win, hitting a 443-foot homer that was hit 112 mph, making a 93 mph throw, and running a 29.5 feet per second sprint speed. Is there anything Schmitt can't do? He wasn't considered a top 100 prospect by most evaluators coming into the season, but the SF Giants have seemed much higher on him than the general consensus among the prospect ranking community. So far, the Giants look like they know what they're talking about, but it is just three games and we need to see a lot more. But so far, Schmitt couldn't have been more impressive. Speaking of impressive, Alex Cobb lowered his ERA to an NL-best 1.70 with 7.1 more shutout innings. Three of his last four outings have been scoreless and at least seven innings, including a complete-game shutout. Logan Webb, Cobb, Tony DeSclafani, and Alex Wood, who's poised to come off the IL as soon as today, form a strong foursome. Sean Manaea and Ross Stripling have struggled mightily, but the Giants have some intriguing youngsters like Kyle Harrison (who's outing last night and season overall are discussed in detail) and Keaton Winn on the cusp of the majors. Sean Manaea continues to actively hurt the San Francisco Giants' chances every time he pitches. His latest outing, in which he allowed eight runs (four earned) raised his season numbers to a dreadful 7.96 ERA, 8.00 xERA, 6.62 FIP, and 5.02 xFIP. Ross Stripling hasn't been much better. It's fair to say that the SF Giants' two offseason starting pitcher signings have not worked out so far. Both pitchers have much better track records than this, but this team also has a sense of urgency to win, and these two are not helping. So something needs to be done—now. Manaea and/or Stripling need to move to the bullpen or go on the injured list. There's basically a zero percent chance that either is DFA'd five weeks into their two-year deals. Again, they have track records of being much better than this, but the SF Giants can't afford to keep running them out there in high-leverage situations, and starts count as high-leverage situations. So what can the Giants do? Fortunately, Alex Wood seems just about ready to come off the IL, so he can push one of them out of the rotation. And there are two key names to watch in Triple-A: Kyle Harrison and Keaton Winn. Farhan Zaidi recently described both as "potentially imminent big leaguers," and the time could be coming quickly. San Francisco Giants fans have been waiting a long time for this. For over a decade, the Giants haven't had a position player prospect come through their minor league system and become an impact player. There's no guarantee that Schmitt will break that stretch of futility, but he sure did provide a spark in last night's Giants win over the Nationals, going 2 for 4 with a booming home run and a single up the middle. Schmitt is best known for his elite glove, and in the last 12 months he's added shortstop and, more recently, second base to his arsenal. Schmitt was originally drafted by the Giants as a third baseman, but played short when Marco Luciano was injured in High-A Eugene last year. He was impressive enough that the SF Giants gave Schmitt more looks there in spring, and that continued at the start of the Triple-A season. Now, with Brandon Crawford on the IL, Schmitt looks like the everyday shortstop until Crawford returns. Once Crawford is back, will the SF Giants simply ship Schmitt back to Triple-A? Probably not, according to Gabe Kapler. Schmitt is here to get a legitimate shot, and Kapler said the Giants are in need of someone who can fill in at short, second, and third. Schmitt is the only player on the roster who can do that, provided that Thairo Estrada and J.D. Davis are already lineup fixtures. In other words, the Casey Schmitt era has begun for the San Francisco Giants, and a wave of talent that includes top pitching prospect Kyle Harrison is not far behind. It's an exciting day for the San Francisco Giants and their fans. After a complete dud of a game last night, the SF Giants decided to shake things up in a major way today, promoting top prospect Casey Schmitt to the major league roster. Schmitt will likely be in the lineup and playing shortstop tonight for the San Francisco Giants. Schmitt was originally well known as a premium defensive third baseman, but he proved he could handle shortstop when he filled in for the injured Marco Luciano last season in High-A Eugene. The Giants played Schmitt at short in spring training, and this year in Triple-A he's been splitting his time between third base and shortstop, and recently started mixing in second base play as well. Offensively, Schmitt got off to a slow start in Sacramento, but has really turned it on in recent weeks. His overall numbers since April 30 are robust, about 44% above the league average, and he has a 12.1% walk rate and strikeout rate. He looks ready for this opportunity, and the only question now is how long will he stick on the roster this time around? Is he here for good? Will he be optioned when Brandon Crawford comes off the IL? These questions remain to be answered (though Schmitt likely stays and gets plenty of playing time), but he's undoubtedly a huge part of the Giants' future plans. The San Francisco Giants are having a roller-coaster season. In their most recent stretch of games, the SF Giants have won five straight, lost four straight, won four straight, and then lost yesterday's series finale to the Brewers. All-in-all, their 15-18 record is unimpressive, but they've mixed elite performance by some (such as Thairo Estrada, J.D. Davis, LaMonte Wade Jr., Alex Cobb, and Tony DeSclafani) with horrendous performance (from the likes of Ross Stripling and Sean Manaea). One theme that has emerged for the Giants is that their offseason signings—Stripling, Manaea, Taylor Rogers, Michael Conforto, and Mitch Haniger—have ranged from awful to mediocre at best. However, it's still very early in the season and all of these players have strong track records that should be weighted more heavily than their most recent five weeks. However, particularly in the case of Stripling and Manaea, who've combined to allow 38 runs in 49 innings (a 6.98 ERA), the Giants may be compelled to make some moves relatively quickly. Alex Wood pitched on a rehab assignment yesterday and should be ready to replace one of those two in the rotation soon. And Kyle Harrison, the Giants' top pitching prospect and one of the best in baseball, just had by far his most dominant outing of the year in Triple-A. His strikeout rate has been excellent all year, but walks have been a major problem. However, in his most recent start, he walked none. If he has another start or two like that, he could find himself in the major leagues. It's no secret that San Francisco Giants infielder David Villar has struggled at the plate this season. After almost 100 plate appearances, Villar is hitting just .145/.242/.325, which translates to a 57 wRC+, meaning about 63% below average offense. At what point do the SF Giants consider sending him down to the Minors, and who would be his replacement? Casey Schmitt is an obvious answer, but he's actually been below league average offensively in Triple-A. But he's been better in recent weeks and provides plus defense all over the diamond. It could be worth giving him a look in the near future. The Giants' bullpen has been one of their biggest problems this year—if not the biggest. What can be done about it? It's been a lot of fluky performance and guys pitching poorly in unfamiliar roles. The SF Giants should stop using so many long relievers and lean more heavily on their tradition relief arms, many of whom have bloated ERAs but better underlying metrics. Does it make sense for the San Francisco Giants to prioritize ground ball pitchers and de-prioritize defense? This would be a legitimate question if it were true, but at least this season, the SF Giants are not de-emphasizing defense, particularly in the infield. J.D. Davis has been outstanding at third base. Brandon Crawford is well known for his glove (but admittedly seems to be in decline). Thairo Estrada is a solid up-the-middle defender. And LaMonte Wade Jr. has done a very nice job at first base. Is the San Francisco Giants' farm system good or bad? It depends on who you ask, and when you ask them. Going into last season, some had the SF Giants as a Top 3 farm system. Now, after some down years and injuries, several publications have them closer to No. 20. But there's a ton of variance here. The Giants' system has the potential to produce some high-end talent, and it has a lot of depth. The San Francisco Giants badly needed some positive momentum, and they got it thanks to Tony DeSclafani and Logan Webb. Despite some moaning and groaning about the Giants' offense so far this year, it's clear that their biggest issue has been run prevention. Unlike last year, the issue hasn't been defense. It's just been shaky pitching, especially out of the bullpen. Enter DeSclafani and Webb, who combined for 15.2 innings and two runs in their two starts. The Giants won DeSclafani's game 2-0, and Webb's game 4-2. Meaning the SF Giants' offense only averaged three runs a game in the final two games of the series, but sometimes you simply need your pitchers to step up and keep runs off the board and put the team in position to win. DeSclafani has been excellent all season and Webb was oh-so-close to eight scoreless himself, before he was bit by a two-out homer in the eighth, continuing a perplexing home run trend for him this season. Joey Bart had his fingerprints all over these two wins. He handled a shaky Camilo Doval in the middle game of the series, twice calling time out and taking a mound visit as Doval was about to be charged with a pitch clock violation that would've resulted in a walk and brought the tying run to the plate. Then in the series finale, Bart got the Giants' first rally going by fighting off a tough pitch for a single, and later added a booming double into left-center that added to the SF Giants' lead. With Gary Sánchez opting out of his minor league deal with San Francisco, this is Bart and Sabol's team, at least for now. Mauricio Dubón didn't mince words. He called out the San Francsico Giants after torching on the field and leading the Astros to a victory over the SF Giants, who fell to 11-17 on the season. After the game, Dubón said that he "was not treated the right way over there" and that "with Dusty (Baker) here now, I’m in heaven.” Asked to elaborate on how he wasn't treated well by the Giants, Dubón spoke to his frustration with a lack of playing time. In over 500 plate appearances with the San Francisco Giants, Dubón was roughly 20% below average offensively. He consistently struggled against right-handed pitching, but did well against lefties, so he mostly played in a platoon, which he clearly didn't like. Dubón proved to be valuable defensively for the SF Giants, at premium positions like center field, shortstop, and second base. However, he developed a very real reputation for being a poor baserunner with a seemingly low baseball IQ at times. Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper didn't seem too pleased with Dubón's comments, noting that the Giants are the team that traded for him and gave him a chance to play in the big leagues, showcase his skills, and put himself in position for a team like the Astros to target him in a trade. They also defended him when he did things like bunt for a hit in a game the Giants led by nearly 10 runs. The San Francisco Giants are finding ways to lose. When they pitch well, their offense doesn't pick them up. When they put together an early lead, the bullpen can't hold it. When they explode offensively, the Giants allowed a huge number or runs by the opponent. The talent is there for the Giants to be at least .500 so far this season, but the reality is they're 11-16 after getting swept in Mexico City. The offense and the defense hasn't been the problem. The SF Giants have above-average offensive numbers across the board, and the overall fWAR by their position players is among the best in MLB. On the pitching side, however, the Giants are simply allowing too many home runs on their fly balls, and allowing a high batting average on balls in play. The good news: these numbers are slow to stabilize and will likely regress to at least something more like league average over time. The bad news: the early results have cost them several wins, and they're five games under .500 and about to play the reigning champs on the road. Mike Yastrzemski hurt himself on a crucial play in the final game. He made a heroic effort trying to catch a pop fly that ended up just out of his reach and counted as a lucky double. Is Patrick Bailey going to be in the majors in the near future? That remains entirely uncertain, as they San Francisco Giants have several catchers with unique backgrounds and current statuses. Joey Bart appeared to be finally putting it all together before he sustained a minor groin injury, but he's avoided going on the IL. Blake Sabol was striking out a ton and looking like his time on the roster might be running short, but he's had a great last two games, including a stunning walk-off homer two nights ago, and suddenly he looks like he's earned quite a bit more rope. Meanwhile, it was Ricardo Genovés, not Gary Sánchez, who was brought to San Francisco on taxi squad when it was thought that Bart might have to go on the IL. Sánchez can opt out of his minor league deal with the Giants if he's not in the majors by Monday, and it's certainly worth noting that he has struggled in Triple-A so far. And now enter Bailey, who was promoted to Triple-A, where both Genovés and Sánchez are already on the roster. The whole situation is pretty wild and there's no telling what the short-term and long-term future holds. As all of this was going on beneath the surface, the SF Giants won their fifth straight game. Their once "feast or famine" offense has normalized and is consistently putting up around five runs a game, which was to be expected. Simultaneously, their pitchers continue to give up more homers than expected (Tony DeSclafani allowed two more last night), and the Giants' offense continues to lead the league in strikeout rate. Amidst those concerning trends, there are still plenty of reasons for optimism as the Giants have been better than average by wRC+ and fWAR by the position players, and their pitchers are first in an interesting and advanced metric called xFIP, which predicts better pitching (and specifically fewer homers) moving forward. It wasn't supposed to end this way. Among hitters with at least 50 plate appearances, no one had K'd at a higher rate than San Francisco Giants catcher/outfielder Blake Sabol. Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley is one of the best relievers in the game, and his strength is striking people out. Sabol and the Giants were one strike away from a loss. Instead, Sabol, who was sitting on a slider after receiving only one fastball on 20 pitches all night, blasted it high and deep into center field, and the SF Giants pulled off their best and most joyous win of the young season. They've won four games in a row. Sabol's position on the roster seemed like it might be in jeopardy just 48 hours ago. With Joey Bart playing well and Gary Sánchez nearing the date on which he can opt out of his minor league contract with the SF Giants if he's not in the majors—in addition to Sabol's major strikeout woes so far—it seemed like his time on the roster could be nearing an end. But an injury to Bart, which seems like it may actually be minor, thankfully, gave Sabol a little more breathing room. And he took advantage in a huge way last night, delivering the Giants' biggest swing of the year. Speaking of injured players, Mitch Haniger wasn't in the lineup last night a day after returning from the IL. Some fans expressed concerns that the Giants were platooning Haniger already, but that's just not the case. They likely want to ease him back into action, and if they wanted him to start two of his first three games back, it made the most sense to skip the middle game when they were facing a righty. Haniger should hopefully be back in the lineup tonight, and in there pretty much every day all season if he stays healthy. Complete games are rare enough these days. But complete game shutouts are almost unheard of in this day and age. Nevertheless, Alex Cobb, the San Francisco Giants' No. 2 starter, pitched an absolute gem as he kept the Cardinals off the board for nine frames. The defense behind him was mostly spectacular, a continuation of a theme for the year: defense hasn't consistently hurt the Giants despite fears that last year's defensive struggles would carry over into 2023. Unfortunately, Joey Bart had to come out of the game with an injury after he pulled up limping on a big double late in the game that contributed to the Giants' winning rally. It was really unfortunate timing for Bart, who seemed to finally be playing the best baseball of his major league career. He was framing well, carrying himself with genuine poise and confidence, leading the pitching staff, putting the ball in play more, having more competitive at-bats. If Bart has to miss any time at all, it's likely that Gary Sánchez will get the call from Triple-A, particularly because he can opt out of his minor league contract if he isn't in the majors by May 1. In better injury news, Mitch Haniger and Austin Slater were finally activated and were inserted straight into the lineup. Both contributed to the Giants' win, and should help a lot as the Giants look to improve against left-handed pitching, which has somewhat unexpectedly given them fits so far in 2023. However, one of their best bats against lefties, Darin Ruf, was simultaneously put on the IL with wrist inflammation, so it was two steps foward and one step back—and that was before potentially losing Bart. The San Francisco Giants are getting healthier, and hopefully it's a sign of good things to come. The Giants lost the first two games of their four-game series against the Mets, but Logan Webb and homers by Brandon Crawford and Wilmer Flores helped the Giants win game three, and Joc Pederson's return sparked the SF Giants' big win in game four. Pederson's return alone is a big boost, but getting Mitch Haniger and Austin Slater back, which could happen as early as today, could be even more impactful. Inexplicably, the SF Giants have been one of the worst teams in baseball vs. left-handed pitching, even though their lineup against lefties features several dangerous righties. But once Haniger and Slater come back, there's no reason why they can't be one of the most lethal lineups in baseball vs. southpaws. There's been a lot of talk recently about the San Francisco Giants' lack of stars and core pieces, with Webb and Camilo Doval mentioned as rare exceptions. But it seems like people are sleeping on Thairo Estrada, who just seems to keep getting better and better. Estrada is off to one of the best starts in major league baseball. He's hit, he's hit for power, he's been stealing bases. He's on pace for a near 20 homer/20 steal season, and FanGraphs pegs him for about 4 WAR when the season is over, which is not necessarily star-level, but it is certainly All-Star caliber. Estrada is just 27 years old and under club control through 2026. Fans of the San Francisco Giants must be getting tired of this. Since a 13-5 start to begin the 2022 season, the Giants have simply played bad baseball over an extended period of time. To be precise, the SF Giants are 73-88 over their previous 162 games, which is just unacceptable given the front office's very public high expectations for this team.\ Despite frequent complaints about the offense so far in 2023, the pitching continues to be the main problem. Last night, Sean Manaea wasn't sharp and put the SF Giants in an early hole. It's asking a lot for the Giants outscore the opponent when they put up nine runs in the game. On the bright side, Tristan Beck had a pretty impressive MLB debut. He's on the roster filling in for Alex Wood, who went on the IL with a hamstring strain that will keep him out for at least several weeks. Beck's final line wasn't particularly impressive, but he showed good command and good stuff in the extended outing that also saved the bullpen. Madison Bumgarner is close to being a free agent again. The Arizona Diamondbacks DFA'd the San Francisco Giants legend today, and he is certain to clear waivers considering he's owed nearly $37 million over the next two seasons and has produced a 5.23 ERA in parts of four seasons with the D-backs. Many Giants fans naturally start to think about the possibility of Bumgarner returning home to pitch in front of his adoring fans in San Francisco, but it's truly not a good idea for anyone involved. Bumgarner has proven in Arizona that he's a shell of his former self. The Giants have a good track record with improving pitchers, but they target pitchers with skills they believe can be improved upon. That doesn't seem like the profile of Bumgarner, who also has very few connections to the current Giants, with Brandon Crawford essentially the only remaining link to the glory days of '10, '12, and '14. The Giants were very much in danger of this trip turning into an utter disaster. While 1-4 is no one's idea of a good road trip through Detroit and Miami, the SF Giants were very close to being 0-5 after today looked like potentially another loss for the Giants, who improved to a still-miserable 6-11 with the win. Alex Cobb grinded his way through five innings, picking up eight strikeouts and featuring some really good stuff. The bullpen, much maligned so far this season, held the line after Cobb had allowed a single run. The Giants' offense, however, found itself in a familiar funk. They managed to score early (albeit only one run), but the did not manage to score often. The script flipped in the second extra frame. After going scoreless in the top of the 10th, and Camilo Doval holding down the Marlins in the bottom half, the Giants exploded for four runs in the top of the 11th thanks to two left-on-left homers by Michael Conforto and Mike Yastrzemski. The SF Giants need Conforto, Mitch Haniger, Joc Pederson, and Austin Slater back on the roster as soon as possible, as their absences have a ripple effect on the rest of the roster that means fewer favorable matchups than desiered, and recently it has showed. But just for today, the San Francisco Giants got a huge win and will return home on a happy flight across the country. Something has to change. The San Francisco Giants have consistently put themselves in position to win baseball games, but night after night, they're finding ways to squander those golden opportunities. Last night, the SF Giants got their ace Logan Webb out to an early 3-0 lead against a Marlins team that struggles to score runs. That should be game over, paticularly if the Giants' offense could keep adding on a run here or there. But instead, as has become all-too-familiar, the SF Giants' offense went ice cold after the fast start, and the Giants' pitching allowed the opponent to get back into the game. Logan Webb was one out away from escaping a threat in the bottom of the seventh, but he hung a slider to Jorge Soler, who turned a 3-2 Giants lead into a 4-3 deficit with one swing. The Giants deserve to be better than 5-10. They're not one of the very worst teams in major league baseball. But injuries have piled up, resulting in guys playing out of position, fewer advantageous matchups, and simply fewer of their best hitters in the lineup on a regular basis. With Michael Conforto, Mitch Haniger, Joc Pederson, and Austin Slater out of the lineup on a consistent basis, the Giants have actually put together pretty decent lineups. But it would sure help to have those guys back, with the good news being that Slater and Haniger have begun rehab assignments with Triple-A Sacramento. The San Francisco Giants couldn't find a way to win a game in Detroit. Mercifully, they didn't lose three games as the finale was rained out. But the SF Giants lost two winnable games against the Tigers, who will likely end up as one of the worst teams in the American League. The Giants got some late heroics from J.D. Davis in the first game of the series, as his three-run homer tied things up in the eighth. But the Giants struggled to score in extra innings, and an extremely costly mental mistake in the bottom of the 11th by David Villar potentially cost the Giants the game. Camilo Doval was one out away from securing the win but allowed a walk-off homer on a 3-0 pitch. Then the SF Giants blew a 6-1 lead in the second game of the series. They scored two runs in each of the first three innings, but then failed to score again the rest of the way, even in extra frames when they were twice given a free runner on second to start the inning. Tony DeSclafnai was outstanding, but it was a wasted effort as Brandon Crawford booted three balls and Blake Sabol took a horrible route on a line drive. The bullpen continued to be a huge liability in the early season and the Giants left Detroit 5-9, which is the third-worst record in the NL.
