WR867: Greenhouse

I caught up with experimental guitarist Curran Faris to talk about his latest release as Greenhouse https://greenhousedrone.bandcamp.com/, ‘ https://audiovisualsatmosphere.bandcamp.com/album/sacrifice-zones’ — which was one of my favourite local records https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr859-favourite-local-albums-of-2023-pt-iii of 2023 — and more! Here's our chat about his current projects, including a collaboration with Cole Peters https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr632-cole-peters as Seracs, as well as reflecting emotion through atmosphere, approaching the guitar as a 'sound source' rather than an instrument, and much more. Need more Greenhouse? Check out episode #393 https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr393-greenhouse-37753f67f62912 (June 2019) This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company. http://devineshirtcompany.ca/ Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/witchpolice. In memoriam: Jaimz Asmundson of Ghost Twin

On New Year's Day, local musician and filmmaker Jaimz Asmundson http://www.jaimzasmundson.com/ passed away. I didn't know Jaimz very well, but he was a guest on the podcast twice -- once in 2014 and once in 2021 https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr587-ghost-twin-399050b340dc70 -- as a member of synthwave duo Ghost Twin https://ghosttwin.com/. As evidenced by this tribute from Winnipeg's iconic Dave Barber Cinematheque, Jaimz was an integral part of the local film community, who remember him far more eloquently than I ever could: https://davebarbercinematheque.com/in-loving-memory-of-jaimz-asmundson/ This episode collects his two appearances on Witchpolice Radio as an interviewee, the earliest of which was one of the 'lost' episodes that wasn't currently on the podcast feed, and includes a live on-air performance. Sending positive vibes to Jaimz's family and friends.

WR861: Favourite local albums of 2023 Top 5

As I do every year, I've made a list of my favourite local albums of 2023. Did I miss albums? Absolutely. Did I immediately question my judgement after I finished narrowing it down to 20? Yuppers. But for good or ill, there are 20 releases by local artists I want to highlight. Continuing the tradition I began last year, I've recorded a series of episodes counting down the records on my list, including interview clips and songs. This final installment covers albums I've unscientifically ranked from 9-6 (I know, random numbering happening here, sorry) which includes  by Derek Helps https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr815-derek-helps, by Tetyana Haraschuk https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr816-tetyana-haraschuk,  by Rob Crooks https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr773-rob-crooks,  by Wilt, and in the number one spot, Super Duty Tough Work https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr829-super-duty-tough-work's . Guitarist Keith Price has been living, working, and playing jazz in Auckland, New Zealand, over the past five years, but he’s (temporarily) back home in Winnipeg with a show Jan. 7! WR843: Elliot Feeling

Good chat on this episode with singer-songwriter/piano player Elliot Feeling https://www.instagram.com/elliotfeelingmusic/, whose release of the new ‘’ EP is just around the corner! We talked about their long history in the local music scene (the great Lonely Vulcans https://soundcloud.com/thelonelyvulcans, among others), finally putting out a solo record, not getting hung up on classical theory, writing on piano vs guitar, recording at House of Wonders https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr473-house-of-wonders-3854683aa07b6c, and much more. (There are a couple of glitchy moments in the interview -- a hazard of recording calls remotely -- but it in no way takes away from the quality of the episode. Pretend they're not there. Thanks) If you need more, check out Elliot with past Witchpolice guests Bicycle Face https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr739-bicycle-face and Mulligrub https://witchpolice.com/episodes/wr825-mulligrub at X-Cues for the release show! https://www.instagram.com/p/Cx71NEEgDAd/ This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company http://devineshirtcompany.ca/ and by the Manitoba Loud Music Awards! https://loudawards.com/ Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/witchpolice.
