Earth Day 2024: Some scientists are calling for "urgent optimism"

Earth Day falls on April 22nd this year. And as with every Earth Day, it’s a chance to slow down and take stock of where we are with climate change and the state of the planet. While the drumbeat of alarming climate change news continues unabated - it's been the hottest year, we have the warmest oceans, and most severe weather on record - some scientists argue that humanity is actually on the cusp of broad, positive change. Even though the years ahead may be rough, as climate warms beyond what had been hoped for, these scientists are feeling “urgent optimism” for what could be the first generation to achieve a sustainable world. USA TODAY National Correspondent for climate and energy transition, Elizabeth Wiese, joins The Excerpt podcast to explain the many reasons to feel hopeful today about the future of our planet. In the age of Ozempic, body image has morphed. How do we learn to love our bodies?

The mass media has pushed skinny on us for decades. And while doctors encourage healthy eating and lower body mass indexes, the body positivity movement supports the inclusion of all shapes and sizes, emphasizing loving the skin you’re in. But there are even more fractures in this conversation when it comes to the newest weight loss fad and object of desire: the drug Ozempic https://tinyurl.com/ya6jzwy4 and its competitors like Wegovy and Mounjaro. There is also a dark side to this pursuit of perfection; namely, eating disorders and other health issues, both physical and emotional. Meredith Nisbet, the National Clinical Response Manager for the Eating Recovery Center, an eating disorder treatment center based in Denver, Colorado, joined The Excerpt to discuss the body image debate and how to navigate healthy ways to see ourselves. The Israel-Hamas War hits a grim six month milestone

After six months of intense human suffering, both sides of the Israel and Gaza conflict have experienced a collective trauma that will affect generations for years to come. It all started with a Hamas attack on Israel, which killed about 1,200 people along with the taking of 240 hostages. It was the single deadliest assault against Jews since the Holocaust. The Israeli response has been brutal, killing over 30,000 Gazans, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, mostly innocent women and children. The situation in the Gaza Strip is now dire, with millions not having enough food, housing, or medical care to meet the needs of a desperate population. Despite this, cease-fire negotiations continue to falter, and both sides remain far apart. After traveling to The Holy Land, USA TODAY World Affairs Correspondent Kim Hjelmgaard provides a special report for The Excerpt on the human stories that define this tragic conflict. SPECIAL | The trouble at Boeing

It’s the stuff of nightmares. Shortly after takeoff in early January, a panel on an Alaska Airlines plane blew off midair. Luckily, the two seats next to that panel were empty. Not so luckily for Boeing, they are now under the microscope by regulators, while workers are coming forward, anonymously and otherwise, saying that the firm had recently been chipping away at longstanding safety practices to speed up the production process with its 737 Max. The blowback from investors, regulators and the public has been swift and isn’t even close to being over. In its pursuit of an edge over Airbus, did Boeing put profits over lives? USA TODAY Consumer Travel Reporter and author of the “Cruising Altitude” column Zach Wichter joins The Excerpt to discuss some of the many challenges Boeing faces. SPECIAL | Can a sociopath that is 'immune to remorse and guilt' learn to be a good person?

Use the word sociopath in conversation, and you're bound to see some raised eyebrows, or worse. The word itself has become less of a mental diagnosis and more of an insult you hurl at someone. But what does it really mean to be a sociopath? Dr. Patric Gagne offers a definition from both a clinical and a personal perspective. Her new book is called "Sociopath: A Memoir." Gagne's first-hand account of how she came to terms with her own sociopathy sheds light on an often demonized and misunderstood mental disorder. Voting rights are under attack nationwide

At the State of the Union, President Biden called on Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This bill would update the Voting Rights Act of 1965, strengthening legal protections against discriminatory voting policies and practices. The act has since been hampered by Supreme Court cases that removed pre-clearance provisions and made it harder to sue to stop discriminatory practices. Marc Elias, an attorney with Elias Law Group and an outspoken advocate of voter protection and fair elections, joins The Excerpt to talk about the challenges voters across the country are facing and describe his efforts to guarantee equal access to the ballot.
