Dr. Stephen A. Furlich - Nonverbal Epiphany: Steps to Improve Your Nonverbal Communication - 659

Dr. Stephen A. Furlich - Nonverbal Epiphany: Steps to Improve Your Nonverbal Communication. This is episode 659 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Dr. Stephen Furlich is the author of Nonverbal epiphany: Steps to Improve Your nonverbal Communication. He is also the best-selling author of a breakthrough book, Sex Talk: How Biological Sex Influences Gender Communication Differences Throughout Life’s Stages. He has taught and researched communication at the university level for over 20 years. He has taught a variety of communication courses with the main focus of better understanding oneself and others. Often, his research projects and the courses that he taught, complemented each other and led into innovative directions. Dr. Furlich has been an associate professor at Texas A & M University since 2018 and served as an assistant professor there for five years prior to that. He has presented at many conferences, including: DFW Metroplex Linguistics Conference, Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education Conference, E-Learning Conference, National Communication Association Conference, Southern States Communication Association Conference, International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines, and International Conference of the American Pragmatics Association. Dr. Furlich, who was recently interviewed by One America News Network, has been published in numerous journals, including: Texas Speech Communication Journal, Kentucky Journal of Communication, The Florida Communication Journal, Journal of Applied communication Research, Academic Exchange Quarterly, Journal of Integrated Social Sciences, and Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. His communication paradigm is from a receiver’s perspective. This places the emphasis on the listener to better understand from the speaker’s perspectives and as a speaker emphasizing understanding from the listener’s perspectives. Both of these become more challenging as differences increase between the speaker and listener. Dr. Furlich has become fascinated with technological advancements in science that have enabled a better understanding of communication. Without these scientific advances, understanding communication is quite limited. This line of research has inspired him to write this book to bring together many different scientific studies to better understand the role of biology with nonverbal communication cues.  He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education, a Master of Arts in Communication Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Texas Tech University. He resides in McKinney, Texas. Our focus today is his book - Nonverbal Epiphany: Steps to Improve Your Nonverbal Communication.  Lots to learn! Thanks for listening! Before you go... Coach Carlos Johnson - Power Engage: Seven Power Moves for Building Strong Relationships to Increase Engagement with Students and Parents - 654

Coach Carlos Johnson - Power Engage: Seven Power Moves for Building Strong Relationships to Increase Engagement with Students and Parents. This is episode 654 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. As a professional speaker, trainer, and author, Carlos Johnson, aka “Coach Carlos,” is locally bred, but his work and research on culture and engagement have taken him across the nation and globe. Coach Carlos and his team of consultants have utilized his experience and research to successfully turn around three failing public schools and one private Christian academy. In addition, his training and strategies have helped to change school culture and increase parental engagement, student enrollment, and staff and student retention. His driving belief can be best summarized by the following quote: “After 20 years of research, all evidence confirms that a highly engaged school culture is the mother of high performance!” The research and results from this philosophy led Coach Carlos to create his systematic approach to revolutionizing school culture by teaching districts how to build healthy performance-based relationships and institutionalize stakeholder engagement. In 2015, Coach Carlos stepped into principalship, and during his three-year tenure, he doubled school enrollment, increased staff pay, transformed school culture, and increased student performance schoolwide. In response to the national school-to-prison pipeline crisis for young men, Coach Carlos created an online Tier-2 PBIS behavior and leadership course for boys called Future Man Success Prep. In addition, his PowerEngage system is an online/on-site system that trains thousands of parents, students, and instructional teams each year on the psychology and practice of engagement. Coach Carlos is committed to transforming institutions and individuals through leadership and learning. Our focus today is his book - Power Engage: Seven Power Moves for Building Strong Relationships to Increase Engagement with Students and Parents. Coach Carlos has an awesome focus! So much to learn from him. Awesome conversation. Before you go... You could help support this podcast by Buying Me A Coffee. Brittany Holmes - Second World: The Warnings 212 - 645

Brittany Holmes - Second World: The Warnings 212. This is episode 645 of Teaching Learning Leading k12, an audio podcast. Brittany Holmes has a passion for educating children. It began with writing on her teachers‛ chalkboards after school. Her favorite feeling was the silky, smooth chalk caked on her fingers. Fast forward many years later, Brittany found herself a mom to Triston, a boy with special needs. Being an educator, she never imagined that she would have a child who struggled academically. Triston is also on the Autism spectrum; and Brittany soon realizes the same feelings that were soothing to her growing up, irritated her son.  As much as she loves Triston, she could not deny the difficulty in raising a child with special needs. A huge support to Brittany was her mom, affectionately known as “Nana”. Nana doted on Triston, and displayed patience with him during his most difficult times. Brittany is the author of a children’s book series - A Boy and his Nana. Brittany Holmes also is the author of the "212" series. Brittany has been an educator for over 20 years.  She remembers watching a parent trying to register their child for school.  In order for the child to be quiet and not bother the parent, the child was handed a device.  When the parent wanted their phone back because they had finished registration, the child threw a fit.  They screamed and started kicking.  The parent handed the device back and immediately the child calmed down.  She witnessed many incidents similar to this over the years.  So, when she started the 212 Trilogy, a lot of her personal feelings about technology's impact on people, inspired her writing. The first book in the series, "The Writ 212" was written and published 7 days before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the world.  Many, who were closed in during the pandemic, read her first book "The Writ 212" and found eerie similarities to the content and the state of the world, calling the book insightful and ahead of its time.  During the pandemic, Brittany released the prequel, "The Warnings 212" which delves into the lives of her characters.  Again, readers found many parallels to the world's future and the book’s contents.  Readers of the 212 series share similar concerns about where the world is headed if we continue our dependency on technology.  Brittany enjoys writing about her passions and uses both the children's book series and science fiction series to share knowledge, spread consciousness, and build relationships with those who have similar thoughts and experiences. Our focus today is Brittany's latest book - Second World: The Warnings 212.  Thanks for listening and sharing. Before you go... You could help support this podcast by Buying Me A Coffee.
