This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham take a deep dive into USC’s defensive shortcomings that sunk the Trojans chances at a Cotton Bowl championship and a 12-win season. After falling to Tulane 46-45 and giving up 16 points in the final four minutes of the game, Coach Hyde questioned why the coaching staff didn’t try something, anything, different to at least slow down a Green Wave attack that essentially faced no resistance from Trojan defenders. Coach Hyde wanted to see USC blitzing much more often, bringing extra rushers from different spots in an attempt to disrupt Tulane offensive plays before they could get started. Blitzing can be high risk, high reward, but USC was already giving up big play after big play, mitigating the risk of bringing extra defenders.
