In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the Trojan football team's return to Howard Jones Field for the resumption of spring football practice. On Tuesday, after nearly two weeks away from the field, the players and coaches returned to practice in a rare Los Angeles downpour, with part of the workout moving to the artificial turf of Cromwell Field. After practice instead of conducting interviews outside the media was moved inside Heritage Hall so everyone could be dry talking about USC spring practice No. 4. Head coach Lincoln Riley talked about a number of topics including their plan to acquire more talent from the NCAA Transfer Portal and how he feels that they have improved the roster over what they had last season, including the gap between the starters and the players just behind them. Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch also spoke for the first time since the Cotton Bowl, talking about what went wrong in that game and how he is looking to see improvement in year two of his system. The guys also talk about USC's Pro Day, another rainy affair, where 12 former Trojan players went through drills and testing for NFL scouts. We were able to hear from Andrew Vorhees who put up an inspiring 38 bench press reps of 225 pounds despite tearing his ACL in drills. On Wednesday veteran tight end Malcolm Epps announced on social media that he would be entering the NCAA Transfer Portal as a graduate transfer. The guys talk about what the loss of Epps means and how it opens up another spot for Riley on the roster. They also discuss USC's latest support staff addition, veteran NFL and college defensive back coach Greg Brown plus what transfer running back MarShawn Lloyd said about how Caleb Williams said that sealed his recruitment. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast host Ryan Abraham and special guest Shotgun Spratling are together again recapping their weekend in Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Tournament. The guys were there checking out the Trojan basketball team that was trying to make a run and win a conference title. That wasn’t meant to be as Arizona State knocked off USC in the quarterfinals, sending the Trojans home early. The guys talk about what went wrong in Vegas with Andy Enfield’s squad that wasn’t entirely healthy heading into the tournament and why the extra rest might be just what the doctor ordered heading into the NCAAs. Heck, USC also did the Pac-12 a solid allowing the Sun Devils to get a big win and sneak their way into the field. Depending on the results in Vegas, the Trojans could have been seeded anywhere from 7 to 11, so coming in at No. 10 is about right. The Trojans do get a tough matchup with Michigan State and will be playing the early game on Friday in Columbus (plus it is St. Patrick’s Day, so there will likely be even more green in the stands than normal). It’s a tough draw but coming in as the underdogs can likely serve USC well and give the Trojans a chance to play well and move on to a likely match-up with No. 2 seeded Marquette. Ryan and Shotgun also talk about what they saw from day one of USC spring football last week, the first opportunity the media has been able to check out the new look Trojans. Shotgun started off talking about five-star freshman receiver Zachariah Branch who everyone has been raving about. His potential is off the charts with terrific speed and strength and most everyone is calling him a “without a doubt” type of prospect. They also discuss how the offensive line looks with a few newcomers on the roster and some guys playing different positions as the coaches try to build depth by cross training everyone. True freshman quarterback Malachi Nelson is coming off a non-throwing shoulder injury but he looked good and actually took part in team drills from what Shotgun was told. Freshman defensive back Christian Pierce also looked good with great size, length and a ton of athletic upside. As this was the third practice of the spring with players wearing shoulder pads, there was actual tackling going on. We got to see pursuit drills from the defensive backs as they took angles and brought the ball carrier to the ground, exactly the kind of plays USC’s secondary was missing on last year. Shotgun was also told that there was more tackling throughout the practice after the media was asked to leave. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back talking about USC kicking off spring football 2023 with Lincoln Riley and the exact same coaching staff but a lot of new faces on both sides of the ball. Both Ryan and Harvey were on campus Sunday for the first spring practice where the media was allowed to attend and the guys were able to check out what the players looked like heading out of the tunnel sporting helmets, jerseys and shoulder pads. They also were able to watch the early team stretching where some special teams drills were going on followed by position drills including tackling by the defensive backs and linebackers. Coach Hyde was hanging out right outside the entrance to Howard Jones Field matching up the numbers with the players as they ran across the street and into the workout. One thing he noticed was that most of the players and coaches keep their eyes straight ahead in a very business-like manner, not looking at or engaging the media that was filming and observing them as they entered practice. Some of the players that caught Hyde’s eye were on the offensive line, with Mason Murphy looking bigger and more like a real college offensive tackle along with Florida transfer Michael Tarquin who also stood out. Freshman quarterback Malachi Nelson reminded Coach of one of his former players when he was a freshman, Randall Cunningham, noting that both are/were tall, thin and athletic. He noted that Nelson and Caleb Williams were running side by side like they were handcuffed together. Texas A&M defensive line transfer Anthony Lucas passed the eye test, looking like someone who can contribute right away for the Trojans. He also liked Georgia State rush end transfer Jamil Muhammad, but thought he would be a little taller, and thought Purdue transfer Jack Sullivan passed the eye test. South Carolina running back transfer MarShawn Lloyd looked “studly” to Coach Hyde along with freshman five-star wide receiver Zachariah Branch. Coach Hyde equates last season to a wedding between USC football and Riley, where everyone got together and welcomed in a new staff and a bunch of new players. Excitement levels were high for this new “relationship” with good vibes and eternal hope. Riley delivered with 11 wins and a Heisman Trophy for Caleb Williams, so what will happen in year two? Coach Hyde says the honeymoon is over and now the real work begins, focusing on achieving higher team goals. This is the Trojans last season in the Pac-12 and the rest of the league knows it. Not only does USC have a target on its back, the competition in the Conference of Champions is better than ever. The Trojans desperately need to show improvements this season for any chance at a championship run and to build some momentum heading into year one in the Big 10. Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino in studio joined by Shotgun Spratling remotely talking about USC kicking off spring football 2023 with a rare Sunday practice (closed to the media) and a roster update that includes jersey numbers for the early enrollee freshmen and new transfers, some position switches including Carson Tabaracci moving from linebacker to tight end and a couple of players who are no longer on the roster. Here are the new numbers for the scholarship players that have joined the roster this off-season: 0 RB Marshawn Lloyd, 1 WR Zachariah Branch, 6 DL Anthony Lucas, 10 RUSH Jamil Muhammed, 13 ILB Mason Cobb, 15 WR Dorian Singer, 17 CB Christian Roland-Wallace, 21 RB Quinten Joyner, 24 WR Makai Lemon, 24 DB Christian Pierce, 25 ILB Tackett Curtis, 27 RB A’Marion Peterson, 29 DB Maliki Crawford, 37 P Eddie Czaplicki, 44 RUSH Sam Greene, 52 OL Jarrett Kingston, 71 OL Michael Tarquin, 72 OL Elijah Paige and 92 DL Kyon Barrs. Besides Tabaracci's position switch the other ones were minor with Korey Foreman, Devan Thompkins and Solomon Tuliaupupu moving from RUSH to defensive end and Sam Greene going from defensive end to RUSH. Three players that were on the 2022 roster were removed from the newest roster, offensive lineman Caadyn Stephen (previously noted in the War Room) along with cornerback Adonis Otey and tight end Ethan Rae. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about USC releasing the official spring football schedule which is slightly different from what was Tweeted out before from a Trojan athletics staff member. The first spring practice will be held this Sunday, March 5 with two more practices on Tuesday and Wednesday (March 7 and 8) before the university goes on spring break. The squad will get back at it on Tuesday March 21 with a regular Tuesday, Thursday Saturday rotation for four weeks straight, leading up to the spring game on Saturday, April 15. Some practices will be partially open to the media and some will also have player and coach availability for interviews after practice. We are expecting an official spring prospectus and roster sometime before the first practice. With spring practice starting up this weekend, our Chris Trevino analyzed the roster and made his projections for how the offensive and defensive depth charts will look like. The guys take a look at Chris' depth charts and comment on which position groups could have the most intrigue throughout spring football. On the recruiting front the NCAA dead period ends on Wednesday, March 1, so the football program can once again start hosting visitors to campus including prospects coming to what the Trojans during spring practices. As the Trojans off-season workouts wind down, strength and conditioning coach Bennie Wylie threw a new wrinkle into his program, hosting a game of dodgeball for all of the players and coaches. CBS also gives their best guest on which Big Ten programs will be pegged to be USC's "permanent" opponents starting in 2024 and the Pac-12 is moving its 2023 media day (the Trojans last) to Las Vegas, held on July 21. Both entities held kickoff events last week and Ryan was at both of them, so he talks about what those events were about and how they plan to help USC football win more games. USC is on the way out of the mess that is the Pac-12 and the fate of the remaining 10 programs is very much in doubt. Commissioner George Kliavkoff is in scramble mode trying to ink a lucrative media rights deal for his member institutions and simultaneously looking at expansion possibilities all the while trying to fend off vultures from the Big Ten and Big 12 who could poach any programs that aren't happy with the money from the TV deal. This week on the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde talk about where this Trojan football team needs to improve heading into spring football. Head coach Lincoln Riley kept his staff the same and tried to improve the roster through the NCAA Transfer Portal and high school recruiting. Coach Hyde shares what areas of the program he would prioritize when it comes to team improvement, starting with the defense that overly relied on turnovers and special teams that likely cost USC's loss in the Cotton Bowl. They also discuss the future of the Pac-12 with commissioner George Kliavkoff scrambling to try and put together a lucrative television deal for the remaining 10 members and potentially some new schools joining the Conference of Champions. The clock is ticking on USC and UCLA's time in the Pac-12, with both programs officially heading to the Big Ten starting in July of 2024. Trojans and the Bruins will be able to take advantage of the B1G's massive TV rights deal with Fox, CBS and NBC, one of the main reasons the Los Angeles schools decided to bolt. Kliavkoff was optimistic that the remaining schools would be able to negotiate an attractive media rights deal that would keep schools like Oregon, Washington, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Arizona State happy, but according to reports the Pac-12 is facing major challenges and the future viability of the conference is in doubt. The guys talk about some of the rumors that are floating around out there, from a potential merger with the Big 12 to adding San Diego State and SMU to the mix with Amazon taking over all of the Pac-12's tier one television rights. While it may not matter as much to USC and UCLA since they are leaving the Pac-12, the two schools are still part of the West Coast and the changing landscape could have an impact on both programs. If a Pac-12 TV deal with a grant of rights locking the programs in isn't signed soon, the potential for more instability increases and we could see the conference fracture. One more defection would likely be a death blow to the Conference of Champions, creating another huge wave of conference realignment. If that happens, some potential West Coast additions in the B1G could be on the table, bringing some positives and negatives for the LA schools. On one hand it would be nice to have a "pod" of West Coast teams to help with some of the travel challenges, but it could also help boost up a recruiting rival like Oregon who has had a lot of success poaching prospects from Southern California. The guys also talk about now USC's name, image and likeness landscape is changing, with one established organization restructuring their operation and two new NIL entities jumping on the scene. Ryan was at two USC NIL kickoff events last week and he talks about some of what he learned about these new organizations and how they plan to try and help the Trojan football team win more games. The guys breakdown the numbers by class and position and compare how the roster stacks up with the 2022 version. They also discuss how head coach Lincoln Riley needs to remove at least five players before this summer when the 2022 roster officially changes over to 2023. The countdown to spring football is on with workouts starting in just a couple of weeks. Our own Chris Trevino has been putting together lists of players to watch for this spring and he discusses some of his selections on the show. His latest piece discusses five Trojans who need to have a big spring like edge rusher Korey Foreman, linebacker Raesjon Davis and offensive lineman Courtland Ford. There have also been a few support staff changes for the guys to discuss including former Oklahoma starting defensive back Bookie Radley-Hiles. Heisman winning quarterback Caleb Williams was in Phoenix for the Super Bowl and during his First Things First appearance he set some lofty goals for his junior campaign including 60 touchdowns and 5,000 passing yards. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE discussing the newly released USC football spring practice schedule that kicks off sooner than usual (in less than a month) due to the week zero game against San Jose State. The first spring practice will be on Saturday, March 4 with practices held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The Trojans will get the week of March 13 off for spring break and the practices will end with the annual spring game held on April 15. At this point we have no other details about spring practice but we are assuming all workouts other than the spring game will be closed to the public as they were last year. Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle five-star tight end Duce Robinson was at USC over the weekend to compete in the Area Code Select West baseball event. He told 247Sports recruiting analyst Blair Angulo that he set a deadline to make his college decision on April 1. Robinson wants to be able to sign with a school by then and be ready for whenever move-in day is. The guys also discuss the latest commitment for the Trojans, bringing some help on special teams with kicker Tyler Robles. The big-legged kicker from La Costa Canyon (Calif.) will join the team as a preferred walk-on and is part of USC's 2023 recruiting class. They also discuss some early projections for USC's 2023 regular season win totals, what we have been able to learn on social media from the Trojans off-season workouts and Caleb Williams being the honorary starter at the NASCAR Clash at the Coliseum on Sunday. This week on the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde preview what could happen on Wednesday for the Trojans, the traditional National Letter of Intent Day for the 2023 recruiting class. With the early signing period in December and the NCAA Transfer Portal now closed to new entrants until May, there aren't expected to be many busy fax machines going in the John McKay Center Wednesday morning, but there are a couple of high profile uncommitted prospects that head coach Lincoln Riley has on his radar so it has the potential to be a great day for USC football. Gardena (Calif.) Serra four-star cornerback Rodrick Pleasant is set to make his announcement at his high school at 10:30 a.m. PT on February 1. Ryan recently saw Pleasant out in Hawaii for the Polynesian Bowl and the speedster would be a welcomed addition to the Trojan secondary. Before heading off to Hawaii he took an official visit to USC and he is closed with Trojan defensive backs coach Donte Williams. Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle five-star tight end/wide receiver Duce Robinson was also set to make his college choice known on Signing Day but there has been some recent buzz that Robinson could delay his decision and wait until later to sign. The baseball/football star is a match-up nightmare and Ryan was also able to check him out at the Poly Bowl. Many recruiting analysts feel Robinson is heading to Georgia, but the Trojans still have a good shot to bring in one of the top prospects on the West Coast. Currently the Trojans have the No. 15 ranked high school class for the 2023 cycle and No. 2 in the Pac-12 behind No. 10 Oregon. USC has 20 prospects signed currently and if Riley was able to add Pleasant and Robinson it would move the team up into the top-8 for high school class rankings. USC has the No. 5 ranked transfer class for the 2023 cycle with 12 total transfer commits. The Trojans are No. 2 in the Pac-12 transfer classes behind No. 4 Colorado and their 23 transfer commits. For the overall rankings with high school and transfers combined USC comes in at No. 8 nationally and No. 1 in the Pac-12 with Oregon at No. 10 being the closest competition. Colorado (21), UCLA (24) and Utah (25) are the only other Pac-12 programs in the top-25 rankings for overall class. Coach Hyde also talked about some of the advantages and disadvantages of the Trojans playing a week zero game against San Jose State, setting up USC with an extra week of practice and a potential opportunity to get a rest before the Pac-12 Championship Game. Coach Hyde isn't a fan of bye weeks at the end of the year, especially if his team is on a roll. While the rest is good, it can really break up your rhythm and timing. He says he important thing is to not dwell on your schedule, something that is out of your control. You play the game each week that is on the schedule and you don't let any of that be a distraction. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino give their reaction to all of the mostly negative fan reaction to USC head coach Lincoln Riley's decision to retain embattled defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. During a two hour sit down with Riley this week, he told local media that he wanted to keep continuity with the coaching staff and no changes would be made heading into the 2023 football season. Specifically with Grinch, he emphasized that his defenses had some really good performances this season but the consistency wasn't there, especially late in the season. Riley did not want to make a rash, emotional decision based on data from one year. He knows Grinch had great results at previous stops and when he arrived at Oklahoma he turned around a bad defense and Riley is confident that USC's defense will be much improved in 2023. Both Ryan and Chris talk about how upset many USC fans were to learn that Riley was going forward with Grinch. Both hosts understand how the defense was terrible this season, but they also think that Riley took a 4-8 team and rebuilt the roster, won 11 games, won the Heisman Trophy, beat both rivals UCLA and Notre Dame and was a play away from the College Football Playoff. Riley made a lot of good decisions about this football program and both feel that he should be given the benefit of the doubt about the future of this defense. This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham take a deep dive into USC’s defensive shortcomings that sunk the Trojans chances at a Cotton Bowl championship and a 12-win season. After falling to Tulane 46-45 and giving up 16 points in the final four minutes of the game, Coach Hyde questioned why the coaching staff didn’t try something, anything, different to at least slow down a Green Wave attack that essentially faced no resistance from Trojan defenders. Coach Hyde wanted to see USC blitzing much more often, bringing extra rushers from different spots in an attempt to disrupt Tulane offensive plays before they could get started. Blitzing can be high risk, high reward, but USC was already giving up big play after big play, mitigating the risk of bringing extra defenders. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast host Ryan Abraham is joined by Shotgun Spratling talking about the very disappointing end to USC's football season, a 46-45 loss to the Tulane Green Wave in the 87th Cotton Bowl Classic. For the second time in the brief Lincoln Riley era USC lost a football game that it controlled throughout and never trailed until the final seconds of the fourth quarter. The Trojans were up 45-30 with just over four minutes left, had 13 more first downs, controlled the ball for nearly 40 minutes, never punted, never turned it over on downs, had Caleb Williams throw for 462 yards and five touchdowns, generated four sacks on defense and only allowed eight completions and still lost. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast host Ryan Abraham welcomes in Tulane Green Wave sideline reporter Maddy Hudak to give USC fans some insight into the Trojans Cotton Bowl opponent. Maddy is a Tulane graduate that provides insights from the field for all of the Green Wave football games. She also covers the New Orleans Saints for The Saints Wire and is a regular on sports radio in the Crescent City. We talk to Maddy about the incredible turnaround for Tulane, from going 2-10 last season to 11-2 this year, giving the Green Wave their first major bowl bid since 1939. Maddy talks about what head coach Willie Fritz did to reverse his team's fortunes, including making a very late offensive philosophical shift over the summer after the team didn't look as good as he wanted moving the ball in the spring. They also talk about some of the star players for Tulane including running back Tyjae Spears who lead the Green Wave with 212 rushes for 1376 and 15 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 6.5 yards per carry. Quarterback Michael Pratt has also shined in this new offense, completing 64.5% of his passes while throwing for 2776 yards, 25 touchdowns and five interceptions.
