It’s hard to imagine a more disturbing take on Pinocchio after the 1940 animated film. The coachman? The smoke monsters? The body horror of becoming a donkey? Horrifying. Effective, even, as the cautionary tale it was.
But this? Literal nightmare fuel. And not just Tom Hanks’ attempt at an Italian accent. There’s also the screaming souls of the damned in the cuckoo clocks, the anthropomorphic animals everyone is just fine with. Monstro as a kraken. What is happening? Who is this for? Not us. Not you. Let us take the pressure off. Sit back, relax, and try not to think about the lifeless painted eyes of a dead boy’s soul… watching you… wanting to know if someone… anyone… will make him a real boy…
