After both teams put up dominating performances in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, their paths diverged. The Texas women continued their dominating ways and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time in four years under Vic Schaefer. A combination of suffocating defense and offensive rebounding led the ladies to the second weekend of the tournament and, hopefully, an even deeper run. The men's offensive struggles continued against Tennessee, with turnovers and a lack of consistent playmakers ultimately spelling the end of the season for them.
The Texas Longhorns opened the NCAA Tournament Thursday with a convincing win, setting up a matchup against former coach Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Volunteers. It wasn't the prettiest game either team had played, with both the Longhorns and the Rams ratcheting up the defensive pressure. When forced to take outside shots, both teams showed why they're often called "low-percentage" shots.
The Texas Longhorns are one of just 22 teams with both the men's and women's team playing in the Big Dance, but the ladies lead the charge with their No. 1 seed, hosting in Austin. The men, after a disappointing trip to the Big 12 Tournament, fell to a No. 7 seed and will take on Colorado State, the winner of the play-in game against UVA. Not to be left out, the football team took the field for the first time on Tuesday, getting their own March madness going.
Both the basketball teams took a trip to Kansas City and had vastly different outcomes. The ladies went in and took care of business, claiming the conference title on their way out of the Big 12, despite the challenges they've faced this year. Coming off of the most successful season this side of 2009, the Texas Longhorns and Chris Del Conte extended head coach Steve Sarkisian's contract another four years through the 2030 season. While the contract details have yet to be released, it's safe to assume that Sarkisian is getting a sizeable raise, with Texas getting Sark's services for a relative discount -- as the third-best paid coach in the Big 12. After a somewhat rocky start to the year, the Texas Longhorns volleyball team has caught fire at the right time and has made it back to the NCAA Volleyball Final Four.
