The last verse of Romans 1 holds in it the entire history of humanity. Just one verse! What is God’s righteous decree and who holds its knowledge? Why do they deserve to die? The answers are surprising, revealing a thread that ties the whole storyline together. A modern theologian said, “The fundamental sin is the failure to worship God.” And this failure to worship God results in all kinds of others sins and suffering and darkness and brokenness. Today we’ll see this play out not just in Romans but in the entirety of our biblical story. In the words of Fleming Rutledge, “Something is terribly wrong and needs to be set right.” QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER __ __ Romans Cor Chmieleski Hope Community Church - Downtown Minneapolis Download Message Slides https://resources.hopecc.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20230305DT_Download.pdf For more resources or to learn more about Hope Community Church, visit hopecc.com https://hopecc.com.

Wrath is a church word that makes many of us cringe. But where does this come from? The scriptures and history testify that God’s wrath is fueled and funded by his love and is therefore good news. This week, we explore the mechanics of wrath, why it matters, and the surprising twist of when it occurs. Paul lays out his theme for the entire rest of the book of Romans in verses 16-17 as he explains both "the righteousness of God" and that "the righteous shall live by faith." Concluding our series in Prayers, we look to a strange scene in the book of Acts where Peter breaks out of prison. But far from being a passage that is telling us to work harder to undo the forces that bind us or even pray more earnestly, our attention is directed to the prison break itself and how beholding this blueprint of the gospel here transforms us and our desire to pray in the first place.Paragraph Description Prayers Davis Johnson Hope Community Church - Downtown Minneapolis Download Message Slides https://resources.hopecc.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/20230108DT_Download-1.pdf For more resources or to learn more about Hope Community Church, visit hopecc.com https://hopecc.com.

A famous Christmas carol asks, “What child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping?” In today’s passage, Simeon and Anna answer those questions. But the question is not just asked of them. When presented with the reality of Christ’s birth, you and I must answer the question, “What child is this?” GOSPEL APPLICATION __ __ Prayers Cor Chmieleski Hope Community Church - Downtown Minneapolis Download Message Slides https://resources.hopecc.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/20221218DT_Download.pdf For more resources or to learn more about Hope Community Church, visit hopecc.com https://hopecc.com.
The virgin Mary had an utterly unique calling, to carry and birth the Son of God. She would have been seen as a liar or a lunatic to claim this was God’s child. Even so, she conceived herself as blessed and called her son the Savior. But this not true only of her. We too are blessed as we see her son as our Savior. Thump. Thump. Thump. My neighbor, Dennis, would see me doing house projects and throw tools over the fence which landed in my lawn with a characteristic “Thump!” He did this because he knew what I needed before I did. Similarly, God knows what we need before we do. So it should give us great joy and peace when Jesus prays for us. Jesus metaphorically throws items into the yard of our lives because he knows what we need! “There is a unique kind of pain in being unseen.” When Jesus gave his most famous sermon (Sermon on the Mount), he gave one of his most famous teachings on prayer. And as special as his words are, repeating them is not his end goal for us. Instead, his words make clear that he sees us and, even more, that he loves us. That’s good news! Every belief system has some form of prayer, but Christian prayer is unique in its form and placement of prayer, not at the center — but in response to what God has said. And yet, prayer is still commedically difficult, which is why we’re beginning a new sermon series looking at various prayers that have been written down in the Scriptures for our benefit. This week, we explore the prayer “I believe, help my unbelief!” Download Message Slides https://resources.hopecc.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/20221106DT_Download.pdf For more resources or to learn more about Hope Community Church, visit hopecc.com https://hopecc.com.
This week concludes our Made for God sermon series. A lot of ground has been covered to this point. Looking ahead, what does it look like to take the requisite time to understand the problems we currently face and the ones still to come from a biblical perspective and to respond appropriately? Each of us, ultimately, is made for God. And that truth makes all the difference when we consider the future of Hope as it relates to identity, gender, sex, and human dignity. Gender dysphoria is a term which describes the unease or distress due to a perceived incongruence between one’s biological sex and an internal sense of gender identity. Does the bible speak of such realities? And what is a gospel approach to those who respond to dysphoria with hormone treatment or surgery? And is it possible for the church to enter into their distress with a message of hope and help rather than demonstrations of neglect or harassment? The American Church has expressed different opinions about the nature, response, and implications of same-sex attraction. How does the bible square with these varied approaches? Is identity rightly tied to one’s attractions as some suggest or are such beliefs misguided? This week’s message will look more deeply into the realities of same-sex attraction. What does the gospel proclaim amidst same-sex attractions? The list of sexual sins is long. For every good and perfect gift that God has given, we have been quick to dishonor him and tarnish the gift of sex. This week’s message will not shrink back from addressing the ugliness and idolatry of sexual sin. But it will not leave us hopeless. The gospel speaks a better word than the empty claims of sexual sin. We hope that many will turn from sin to God and trust him for health and holiness. Let the Holy Spirit renew you as you consider the four aspects of gospel sexuality: IDENTITY in Jesus Alone, CLEANSED completely for all sin, especially sexual sin, FORGIVEN in Christ so that it was as if you have never sinned once in your life, and allowing the Sexual Integrity that the Gospel informs us to be your GUIDING PRINCIPLE moving forward. There are two undeniable realities which emerge from the earliest pages of the Bible–God is Creator of all things and his work of creation is good. Given our current series, this means gender and sexuality are created by the Lord and, in an unblemished state, they are unquestionably good. So, we must first begin by acknowledging God’s initial design and intent for sex, gender, and human sexuality. What comes to mind when hearing the word “authority”? Most of us become uneasy because we’ve either observed or been hurt by someone who has misused authority. So how could it be that God’s authority is good news for us? In this first message of our new fall sermon series, we’ll take a closer look at God’s authority to answer that question.
