How To Be You & Belong To Another | Part 1: Terry Real

US: Getting Past You and Me to Build a More Loving Relationship. My therapist got it and right away said, “Kevin, I want you to get this book.” I did. It revealed aspects of how I behave unhealthfully in relationships that are nothing less than revolutionary for my life. As an individual, spouse, parent, and more. And bigger picture, how we culturally live as “you and me” and individuals when the bedrock of our being is relational and us. It will either wow you as it did me, or you’ll have to fully dismiss it. And I don’t think you will. I then went to find out who this guy is and found this book US was was published by Goop press, which is founded and owned by famed actress and client of Terry’s, Gwynyth Paltrow. Same with actor Bradley Cooper who emphatically endorses Terry. But then people like famed psychotherapists Esther Perel and Lori Gottliev I find are touting Terry and this book us. And interestingly, the forward is from one of Terry’s patients. The forward alone rocked my world. It’s by a singer you may have heard of. Bruce Springsteen. But it’s not the celebrity component that impresses me, it’s the humble and heartfelt words they shared about their life changes. Bruce said, “At age thirty two I hit an emotional wall and realized I was lost in a deep dark forest, largely of my own making without a map. So began forty years of trying to find my way through the shadowed trees, down to the river of a sustaining life. Terry Real has been a guide and this book is a map through those trees. I agree. I wanted to share Terry with you, so this episode is part one of my discussion with him. Find him at terryreal.com. Live Your Purpose & Reboot Your Mind | Randy James: Colin O’Brady Part 3

THE 12-HOUR WALK: INVEST ONE DAY, CONQUER YOUR MIND, AND UNLOCK YOUR BEST LIFE.” With me is my frequent co host, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert. We give focus to Colin’s two main topics. First, his concept of “What is your Everest?” We really bring it down from some epic, exotic adventure, to really, just what gives you purpose? That is the best Everest ever. Can you do this in the day to day of your life? Then we hit the primary concept of the 12-Hour Walk, which is rebooting your brain. Something we in our culture today, rarely do. Sleep is like recharging your phone. Needed. But it’s not an operating system upgrade. That’s the concept in this 12-Hour Walk idea. I encourage you to listen to the discussion, even if you have zero intent to go on a 12-Hour walk. Plenty of other ways to achieve it. The goal would be just to do…anything. Though Randy and I are both planning what we decided to name, a 12-Hour meander. How Your Physical Health Impacts Your Mental Health & Vice Versa | Functional Friday

How your body gets derailed by your mind (and vice versa). I’m with The fourth pillar of getting you well in Functional Medicine is dealing with Relationships, and your foundational relationship is between your body and your mind. We hear plenty about “body and mind” connection but very little that we actually understand how to apply to our everyday lives. We continue to see people pursuing health in their bodies but being derailed by issues of the mind. There is a very real truth to the “physical manifestation of emotional pain.” This is a bad response to...stress. Relationships, trauma, financial issues, and even exciting events can build up to ongoing anxiety that will manifest poorly if not managed well. On the other side we have depression and hopelessness which is almost always treated with a mind focus, while we often find the body in disarray is often a primary culprit. Ultimately if our mind is in bad straits it will often play itself out in physical ailments and we can say the same in reverse. When we are properly tending to your mind but your body is in disarray, your mind is compromised. You may have seen much on the gut/brain connection, or come across Dr Bessel Van Der Kolk’s book, The Body Keeps The Score. In this show we aim to simplify the concepts and give you a viable understanding of the “chicken and egg” of mind and body connection. Colin’s highly publicized expeditions have been followed by millions and his work has been featured by The New York Times, The Tonight Show, The Today Show, and Joe Rogan, that guy with a podcast almost as popular as this one. Harness Your Grief & Purpose To Find True Joy | Part 3: (Susan Cain) with Tom Ziglar

#1023: How do we one, handle them with health, and two, allow them to make the good things in life even better? This ends my series on Susan Cain and her book and message, Bittersweet, How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole. Susan was my guest in episodes 1020 and 1021 and now I talk with Tom Ziglar about it, and it’s such an interesting discussion. Tom is of course son to Zig Ziglar. Zig is one of the most renowned names in inspiration and motivation worldwide and known for positivity. I’m concerned people think he was just Mr lemonade out of lemons with books like See You At The Top and don’t realize he also wrote Confessions of A Grieving Christian after his 46 year old daughter Suzan dies of a lung disease. This was at the height of Zig Ziglar’s success, influencing over 250 million people to embrace positive perspectives. As you’ll hear Tom share, following Suzan’s death, Zig walked his dog and cried, near daily, for two years. He didn’t deny the sadness and the pain, and even after he made some recovery, he never forgot. But he also let it refine and strengthen him and he stayed true to his faith and purpose. As you’ll hear, this is much of our discussion, how our faith and purpose ultimately influences how we weather the daily disappointments and let downs, and the big traumas of life. The Hard Work Of Relaxation | Functional Friday

#1022: The hard work of true relaxation and renewal. In our last Functional Friday episode we talked about us only being as strong as our level of recovery. Daily there are things we do, with sleep being paramount. But there are other important aspects as well. We often pursue relief, but not renewal. Kicking the shoes off at the end of the day. Watching a game or binge watching a show. Reading a novel. Eating out. But do we ever finish these things and feel renewed and refreshed? Do we stand up, stretch our our arms and say, “Man, do I feel great now!” Not usually. We might feel some relief, but not renewal. How about vacation? Do you generally feel refreshed when you return, especially those of us with kids?  Or do you feel inspired by some good experiences, but fairly exhausted, needing a vacation from your vacation? So when do we find actual renewal that truly strengthens us for the long haul? Or as you’ll hear my co-host Dr Randy James talk about, how do you go about  The HARD work of true relaxation? This is a significant part of the self-care you need understanding of and permission for if you are going to get closer to functioning at your full capacity. Her record-smashing TED Talk has been viewed over 30 million times on TED.com and YouTube combined.  Her new book is called Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole, and it was an instant New York Times best seller as well. It was the topic of our first episode together. Here we walk through her values and habits in the key areas of life and as she shares about her personal life she also shares how the research on Bittersweet evolved some of her perspectives, starting off with her spirituality and faith. Experience More Beauty And Joy By Allowing In Pain And Sadness | Part 1: Susan Cain

#1020: In 2013 Susan Cain published her book, QUIET: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. It was beyond a best seller. It has spent seven years on the New York Times best seller list and as of this recording is still in the top 500 books on Amazon. Her record-smashing TED Talk has been viewed over 30 million times on TED.com and YouTube combined.  When they told me Susan was publishing another book, I didn’t hesitate. The book is called Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole, and it was an instant New York Times best seller as well. The most beautiful and joyful experiences of my life have also held an ache and a longing, and this is what Susan is speaking to. She gives focus to the four Hippocratic temperaments of sanguine, melancholic, choleric, and phlegmatic. Most of our world’s greatest creativity and art comes from a melancholic temperament, but Susan writes, “We’ve organized American culture around a sanguine-choleric outlook (forward leaning and combat ready), while Freud labeled melancholic as narcissistic and the main stream culture often views sorrow and longing as clinically depressed.” Susan asks, “How did a nation founded on so much heartache turn into a culture of normative sunshine and enforced positivity?” What you’ll hear is a candid discussion that gives us permission to feel the feels and allow sorrow and longing in, in order to more fully experience joy and beauty. You Only Grow Stronger When You Rest And Recover | Functional Friday

cohost Randy James, medical doctor and functional medicine expert. You’ll hear Dr James change your paradigm by stating that our evening and our sleep is actually how we are starting our next day. How we prepare for sleep, how long and how well are bottom line what are fueling our performance for the next day. All our output, the topic of our previous Functional Friday episode, is subject to our rest and recovery. Many of us are not recovering and every day is a dip lower in our ability...or we’ve stagnated at a mediocre performance level. If we are taking out more than we are depositing, ultimately we’ll end up bankrupt and that’s when we are forced to rest via sickness, disease and disability. I believe you’ll find different information and perspectives on recovery and sleep than you ever have and get clarity on what you can do to best support all the “doing” you desire in your life!  Self-Help(ful) is presented by Ziglar, the most trusted brand in personal and business development impacting over 250 million people worldwide. Be OK With Not Being OK | Part 2: Tyler Merritt

#1018: I’m back with Tyler Merritt for part 2 to talk through his personal Values, Motives, and Habits. To see what drives him. In part 1 together our focus was a 6’4” dreadlocked Black man in America who absolutely knows what it’s like to be negatively stereotyped and marginalized. I encourage you to listen to that episode if you haven’t, but now…we go behind the scenes. Tyler Merritt is a Nashville-based actor, activist, cancer survivor, founder of The Tyler Merritt Project, and author of "I TAKE MY COFFEE BLACK: REFLECTIONS ON TUPAC, MUSICAL THEATER, FAITH AND BEING BLACK IN AMERICA." Over the course of his career, Tyler has gained recognition through notable acting projects including "Kevin Probably Saves The World," "Outer Banks," and "The Outsider," as well as serving as the face of the worldwide teaching curriculum for The Gospel Project for Kids. How To Leverage Privilege, Marginalization And Stereotypes | Part 1: Tyler Merritt

#1017: Tyler Merritt is a 6’4” dreadlocked Black man in America who absolutely knows what it’s like to be stereotyped and marginalized. While Tyler is a steadfast activist in the face of racism, I invited him on to talk about stereotypes and marginalization overall. To a great degree, if you are not a white, American man, you have experienced marginalization, and that is our focus. How can you flourish amongst it with strength compassion? And if you’re a white, American male, I’d encourage you to tune in so you can increase your own strength and compassion. How To Increase Your Daily Output | Functional Friday

#1016: Your daily output is in essence, your work. All of it. The daily tasks and duties in which you exert yourself to fulfill. Personal maintenance, parenting, your job or schooling, relationships, home and life maintenance...everything. Your capacity for daily output is finite, even though we like to think of ourselves as needing to be limitless. How often do you feel spent and you’re only halfway through the day? Or maybe you make it strong through the day but by evening you have nothing left for your family and relationships or a new venture you desire to put effort into? Everyone wants more energy. We’ve created billion dollar companies around energy drinks to give us more energy. But imagine your car being overheated and bogging down and you just keep shoving more gas in the tank! The question is…what is zapping it’s energy? For you, what daily activities, exertions, environments, and mental activities will more quickly deplete, OR… help to better sustain and further your daily output and capacity? This is what Dr Randy James and I address in this episode. Keep Your Goals And Habits Progressing On The Minimum | Part 3: (Michelle Segar) with Tom Ziglar

#1015: Habits and goals; what to do when our plans are disrupted. This wraps up my series on Michelle Segar and her book, The Joy Choice: How To Finally Achieve Lasting Changes In Eating And Exercise. Her focus is just that, the habits we intend to fulfill, and how we so often fail. We look at them as all or nothing and when life happens, we let them fall. And the key is being prepared for this, expecting it even, and having a plan. In this episode I bring Tom Ziglar on to discuss this, and how it also relates to our overall goals. Tom is CEO of Ziglar, son of Zig Ziglar, and of course my frequent co-host. He’s grown up in a goals culture and knows well what derails us. Fortune For Those Who Do Not Need Or Care For The Fame | Part 3: (Tim Schurrer) with Tom Ziglar

#1011: We Tim spent a decade as COO for author and leader Donald Miller, leading the team outside of the spotlight, and this is the focus. We’re in a culture where everyone is trying to get attention. To be in the spotlight and on the stage, to get likes and followers. And for everyone in the spotlight there are scores of people supporting the effort. People making lots of money, having lots of fulfillment, and we debate, possibly experiencing more joy and peace than the person grinding it out to be up on stage. Tom Ziglar spent a lifetime watching his father, Zig Ziglar, on stage and in the spotlight. He helped support his dad. Today Tom is in the spotlight, so he’s experienced both sides. Further, he grew up amongst his Dad’s peers on stage and got to see the good and bad of the spotlight, and rub shoulders with thousands of people supporting those people, so he is a veritable expert on both sides. This may be the only podcast series not trying to push everyone to push for the spotlight, the stage, and for attention for everything they do. It’s honestly not where the most opportunity is. Guard Yourself From A Toxic Environment | Functional Friday

#1010: What are you coming into contact with on a daily basis? Dr. Randy James, MD and I are going to open your understanding to what you need to know. To take an extreme, what if you let a daily dose of radiation wash over you every day. Just a mere second, not too much. But every day, over time, what would happen? Enough would be catastrophic. As our world is increasingly filled with pollution and toxins, the very air is truly suspect. What is touching our skin, what are we smelling in through our nose, irritating our eyes? Allergies, mold, toxins and chemicals. Should we all walk through life wearing surgical masks and radiation suits? Environmentally it wouldn’t hurt, but it might cramp your social life. What DO we need to be on the lookout for? What is most threatening to us? How much of our physiological and psychological maladies are related to what we come into contact with via our skin and the very air we breath? Let’s find out. You Make Your Best Decisions When You Feel Grateful | Part 2: Tim Schurrer

#1009: I’m back with Tim Schurrer to walk through his personal Values, Motives, and Habits, and we land on two really profound perspectives. We get into his personal quest to be a musician and his love for golf and basketball, and how he practices “prehab” to avoid the need for rehab. The Number One Way To Program Your Day For Joy And Success | Functional Friday

#1007: You are listening to messages that program who you are and how you feel nearly 24 hours a day, and you have control over the vast majority of these messages. All day long you are listening to two things; the auditory messages from every direction you tune into or expose yourself, and often from them, you then continue to listen to those messages as they play inside your head as thoughts. The social media and news headline fighting, the snarky memes, the negative bent of most media, the complaint of friends, family, and co-workers, the music, videos and on and on. If you build a house would you build with wood and steel and brick, or garbage? Every day you are building your mind and attitude. What are the ingredients you are giving it? This is our Functional Friday episode and Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert, joins me to discuss the effects of our audio input and how it impacts more than just our mind, but our physical aches and pains as well. And the main point is how you can help yourself, be well, by safeguarding what you hear and listen to and ultimately…think. High Performance Aging | Part 3: (Becca Levy) with Randy James

#1006: We continue the discussion on aging from my conversation with Becca Levy, author of Breaking The Age Code who I featured in episodes 1003 and 1005, but here I bring on my favorite medical doctor and dear friend Randy James to discuss positive and high performing aging through a Functional Medicine lens and just real world walking out this concept of not accepting the demise we currently do in our culture, where you hit your mid 20s and 30s and start saying, “Well, I just can’t do what I used to do,” and meanwhile this March, 2022, Kenichi Horie at age 83 set a world record sailing solo across the Pacific without stopping, the same thing he did at age 23. That’s 60 years later. He says he hopes to continue such voyages till he’s 100. We quickly just write him off as an anomaly. But is he? Every Day Older Is A Day Of Increased Power | Part 2: Becca Levy

#1005: I’m back with Dr Becca Levy to talk about Values & Habits in the key areas of life fulfillment, and look at how we have positive and negative perspectives and expectations around aging. And “aging” these days seems to be expected at earlier and earlier ages. To a great degree, we will age as we expect to age. So in this episode we talk to an expert around just that, the expectations we have and will likely manifest in our lives. Every day older we become, we should be adding to our ability. Yes, at some point late in life we may find some lessening strengths, but that is not a given. Animals are not hobbling around. They are full tilt till the end. Why can’t that be you and me? Dr. Becca Levy is an award-winning Yale Professor of Psychology and Global Health. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University. She has given testimony before the United States Senate on the effects of ageism and contributed to briefs submitted to the United States Supreme Court in age-discrimination cases. She is credited with creating a field of study that focuses on how positive and negative age stereotypes affect the health of older individuals. And she is the author of Breaking the Age Code: How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long & Well You Love, which just came out. Find it anywhere you get books and connect with Becca at becca-levy.com. I encourage you to listen to our previous episode, 1003, where Becca and I dig into ageism and how we can age better by viewing it more positively, and of course, taking more positive actions. Control The Direction Of Your Life By Controlling The Input Through Your Eyes | Functional Friday

#1004: control your direction by controlling your visual input. What you look at is where you go. As we continue with the first pillar of overall physiological and psychological health and wellness, following the structure of Functional Medicine, Dr Randy James and I are talking about INPUT. The good and bad we do and do not put into our bodies. In episode #3 we covered the huge aspect of what we do and don’t put into our mouths. In this show we address visual input. This is not an area we give much thought or weight to unless we’re thinking of…looking at naughty pictures. In all truth, I expected it to be a 20-30 minute discussion, but as you will hear, some of our points really expanded. Just like the food we eat, everyday we choose or allow a steady and full diet of visionary input into our minds. We discuss the effect screens have on us, not just what we watch but the very real issue of blue screens themselves. Ultimately, we address what cumulative visual input is harming us and taking away life, and what is helping us and giving us life? We have control over the majority of this if we’ll take it. Videos, news, pornography, social media, ads and consumerism…there is a virtual-visual onslaught and reality in our home and work environment. I think you’ll find your eyes opened, pun intended, and your mind convicted. You can take immediate and significant action right away. How You View Aging Determines How You Age | Par 1: Dr Becca Levy

#1003: How will you age? Whether you are no in your late twenties or late fifties or further, everyone feels they are getting older. Of course we are chronologically getting older, so is a child, but we view children as growing older and better. Earlier and earlier these days however we view every day getting older as a negative and we are less capable. Should this be the case? And how is the negative view of aging hurting us all, no matter what age you’re at as you hear this. This is a big topic of interest for me. I’m 51 and feel more capable than ever, and want to maintain this as long as possible. So I brought on an expert. Dr. Becca Levy, Ph.D., is an award-winning Yale Professor of Psychology and Global Health. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University and held a National Institute on Aging postdoctoral fellowship at the Division of Aging and Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She has given invited testimony before the United States Senate on the effects of ageism, contributed to briefs submitted to the United States Supreme Court in age-discrimination cases, and participated in United Nations discussions of ageism. She is credited with creating a field of study that focuses on how positive and negative age stereotypes affect the health of older individuals. How To Change Our Image Of Ourselves | Part 3: (Josh Peck) Tom Ziglar

#1002: We are talking about changing the idea we have of ourselves. Can we really? This continues the topic I discussed with actor Josh Peck, who grew up poor and extremely overweight. He found success as an actor and lost over 100lbs, yet testified his mindset about himself and life didn’t immediately change. I have Tom Ziglar with me to discuss this issue, how so often we pursue positive growth in our lives and yet we can often realize the tangible result of an achievement, yet not find fulfillment because we still retain our old mindset and mental image. And to something Josh shared, how much can we really erase the old image?Self-Help(ful) is presented by Ziglar, the most trusted brand in personal and business development impacting over 250 million people worldwide. What To Put In Your Mouth For Wellness

#1001: To be fully well, or as well as one can possibly be, takes four key pillars. The first is the input into your body, which comes through your senses. In this show we focus on what you put in your mouth. As you’ll hear the good doctor Randy James say, so much of our lack of wellness can be tracked to, “What are we putting in our body that it doesn’t want, and what are we not putting in our body that it needs.” The struggle is, there are no one-size-fits-all answers. Just because one style of diet helps your friend lose weight and be fit and trim doesn’t mean it will work for you. But we can give you a framework and a structure that makes sense, and from it you can start discovering a healthy diet of what does and doesn’t go in your mouth for your best results. You will hear us address most of the main dietary trends right now and discuss the relevance of them. You will also hear much...compassion. Food is our primary drug and we can’t abstain from it, not for long. Our culture is built around food and two primary aspects; taste and convenience. But the truth is, food can be our greatest medicine. We are either eating to enhance our life or eating to enhance our death. So listen in for some truly beneficial guidance and some counsel you can take with you and take action on and quit some of the frustration and get results.
