Google alerts users about unsecure Android TV OS boxes

Researchers say some popular low-cost Android TV boxes and dongles come with pre-installed malware. Here's how to quickly check if your Android TV OS device is licensed and protected by Google Play Protect. Android TV boxes have become immensely popular in the last couple of years. However, security researchers recently discovered numerous top-rated Android TV set-top boxes and dongles sold on e-commerce platforms like Amazon are preloaded with malware. Google says most of these devices are marketed as Android TV OS-powered boxes but are built using Android Open Source Project and some even come with Google apps and Play Store not licensed by Google. But just because a set-top box or a dongle comes with Android TV doesn’t mean it’s certified by Google. The tech giant has acknowledged the issue and shared guidelines on how to check if your device is built with Android TV OS and is Play Protect certified. If you are thinking of purchasing an Android TV, make sure to check if the manufacturer is listed on the Android TV website under the ‘Global Partners’ section. In case the device isn’t listed for some reason, try checking the Google Play Protect status.

IBM to pause hiring in plan to replace 7,800 jobs with AI, Bloomberg reports

May 1 (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) expects to pause hiring for roles as roughly 7,800 jobs could be replaced by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the coming years, CEO Arvind Krishna told Bloomberg News on Monday. Hiring specifically in back-office functions such as human resources will be suspended or slowed, Krishna said, adding that 30% of non-customer-facing roles could be replaced by AI and automations in five years. His comment comes at a time when AI has caught the imagination of people around the world after the launch of Microsoft Corp-backed (MSFT.O) OpenAI's viral chatbot, ChatGPT, in November last year. The reduction could include not replacing roles vacated by attrition, the PC-maker told the publication. IBM did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Amazon is building an AI-powered ‘conversational experience’ for search

It looks like Amazon will be joining the chatbot fray. As spotted by Bloomberg, the company has posted job listings describing how it is “reimagining Amazon Search” with a new “interactive conversational experience that helps you find answers to product questions, perform product comparisons, receive personalized product suggestions, and so much more,” according to a listing for a machine learning-focused engineer. You can see another cached job listing here. Amazon is pitching these changes to search as absolutely massive. “This will be a once in a generation transformation for Search, just like the Mosaic browser made the Internet easier to engage with three decades ago,” Amazon wrote. “If you missed the 90s—WWW, Mosaic, and the founding of Amazon and Google—you don’t want to miss this opportunity.” And we might be seeing the changes sooner rather than later, as Amazon wants to “deliver this vision to our customers right away.” It’s understandable why Amazon seems to be racing here. A chatbot can be a useful starting point when you’re looking to buy something with specific parameters. And just last week, Google showed how its new AI-powered Search Generative Experience can create buying guides from a single search. Amazon certainly doesn’t want to lose any ground in shopping, so it’s not surprising that the company wants to introduce its own chatbot very soon.

Beating competitors, Google I/O 2023 turns into Google AI 2023

Instead of introducing a few single AI tools, Google made AI the focus of the Google I/O 2023 event stage. As Google's annual developer event, Google I/O is typically the place where the search giant showcases to developers improvements to its programming platform, products, and innovations. new creation of the company. But with the unusual things introduced by the company during this year's event, this definition is no longer accurate. The first unusual thing is the image of a duck jumping up and taking over the stage at the beginning of the event. Then there's the musical performance created as "an experiment of generative AI in conjunction with Dan Deacon and other Google AI tools including MusicLM, Bard, and Phenaki." It is unclear of those pieces of music, how many are from human compositions, how many are generated by AI. While many people are still a bit confused about the topic of today's event, Google CEO Sundar Pichai took to the stage and confirmed their suspicions. It's not about the company's first folding smartphone, it's about AI - Google I/O 2023 turned into Google AI - with Pichai stating: "AI is now in everything the company does ." With AI proliferating, " we're redesigning every single one of our core products, including Search ."

Japan plans to lead talks on AI risks at G7 digital meeting

Japan intends to lead a discussion on artificial intelligence and its risks at the Group of Seven ministerial meeting on digital issues the country will host at the end of the month, communications minister Takeaki Matsumoto has said. The push comes as the AI revolution, including chatbots like ChatGPT, has brought with it a range of concerns, such as the unauthorized collection of personal data and its impact on learning environments. Matsumoto on Friday stressed the importance of multilateral efforts in advancing and regulating AI, saying at a news conference that Japan “would like to lead the discussion so its analysis and verification can proceed under an international framework.” Last week, the Italian Data Protection Authority imposed a temporary ban on the use of ChatGPT over suspicions that its developer OpenAI illegally collects vast amounts of personal data. Meanwhile, Japanese officials said Thursday the education ministry is aiming to formulate guidelines regarding the use of ChatGPT and other AI chatbots in schools by next March as concerns grow over their impact on students’ writing and thinking skills. “I am aware that the rapid advancement of AI and its growing use have raised issues such as its potential societal impact if abused and the collection of personal data,” Matsumoto said. At a separate news conference, Digital Minister Taro Kono said he hoped “the G7 would send out a unified message” on the topic. The Digital and Tech Ministers’ Meeting will be held in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, for two days from April 29.

Elon Musk plans AI startup to rival OpenAI, report says

Billionaire Elon Musk is working on launching an artificial intelligence start-up that will rival ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing people familiar with his plans. Twitter-owner Musk is assembling a team of AI researchers and engineers, according to the FT report, and is also in discussions with some investors in SpaceX and Tesla about putting money into his new venture. Musk’s plan for the firm comes weeks after a group of AI researchers and executives, including himself, called for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4, citing potential risks to society. Companies from Microsoft to Alphabet are pushing to incorporate Generative AI, the technology behind chatbot sensation ChatGPT, into their offerings. However, ChatGPT is facing pushback as regulators call for well-defined rules ahead of its mass adoption. Italy has banned ChatGPT over privacy issues, while a European privacy watchdog created a task force in a first step toward a common policy for AI. Musk has secured thousands of graphics processing units, systems that power the computing required for intensive tasks such as AI and high-end graphics, from Nvidia Corp., according to the FT. Shares of the chip company, which declined to comment on the matter, gained on the news on Friday. Musk last month registered a firm named X.AI Corp., incorporated in Nevada, according to a state filing. The firm lists Musk as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk’s family office, as a secretary. It was not clear if the firm was related to Musk’s reported AI start-up efforts. Musk did not respond to a request for comment. Musk is one of the co-founders of OpenAI, which was started as a nonprofit in 2015. He stepped down from the company’s board in 2018.

The Thinking We Haven’t Done on LLMs

You probably haven’t heard of human-centered evaluation of LLMs, and that needs to change. Human-centered work seeks to understand how real humans interact with technology, so that we can understand how humans (with all of their cognitive biases and quirks) interact with LLMs, and how these models affect individual human decision-making. What are LLMs? In the past year, Large Language Models (LLMs) have exploded in popularity—from research, to industry, to public awareness and accessibility. For instance, ChatGPT set historic records for its customer growth, with over 100 million users in its first two months. These models predict next tokens (character, word, or string) based on past context, generating free-form text for a variety of tasks in almost any specified style. This means that people can repeatedly integrate LLMs into their daily lives—to decide what to eat for breakfast, to write the responses to emails left unanswered from yesterday, to develop the sales pitch they have to present mid-morning, to generate a funny joke during a break from work, etc. A variety of concerning issues of LLMs have already been identified, such as biased, toxic, or hallucinated outputs, but these largely only reflect distributional or instance-wise properties of their outputs. The potential ubiquity of this tool means that we need to consider how humans will actually interact with and use this new technology, while also acknowledging that we are all prone to cognitive biases and other quirks. This area of research is referred to as human-centered evaluation, and it has not yet been thoroughly explored for LLMs. Human-centered evaluation is, however, already popular in the Explainable AI (XAI) community. What is Explainable AI? Defining explainability for ML models is a subject of ongoing discussion. For the purposes of our discussion, we will focus on the most common type of model transparency seen in industry: post-hoc explanations of black box models. These often rely on only a trained model’s inputs and outputs to identify patterns in how models make decisions. These methods aim to unlock transparency in order to allow stakeholders to understand the decision-making process of models to improve trust and mitigate downstream harms. Arthur’s explainability features offer a variety of explanation options including counterfactual explanations (understanding how a model’s predictions would have changed given a hypothetical, what-if scenario) and popular methods such as LIME and SHAP.

Meta developing ChatGPT-like AI to help advertisers create ads

Meta is reportedly planning to develop new artificial intelligence tools similar to ChatGPT to create ads that have better reach among audiences. Meta chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth told Nikkei Asia that Facebook’s parent company is planning to commercialise the use of generative AI technology to improve its ad creation business in its apps. “We expect we’ll start seeing some of them this year. We just created a new team, the generative AI team. They are very busy. It’s probably the area that I’m spending the most time, as well as Mark Zuckerberg and Chris Cox [chief product officer],” Mr Bosworth said. Meta chief Mr Zuckerberg posted on Facebook in February that the company is creating a “top-level product group” focused on generative AI “to turbocharge our work in this area”. He noted that the company is putting together a single group made up of staff from other teams who are working on generative AI across the company. The group, Mr Zuckerberg said, would be focused on building creative and expressive tools and later on developing AI personas to help people “in a variety of ways”. “We’re exploring experiences with text (like chat in WhatsApp and Messenger), with images (like creative Instagram filters and ad formats), and with video and multi-modal experiences,” the Meta chief said in February. Mr Bosworth said Meta’s AI can boost the effectiveness of ads by offering tools to customise them for different audiences. Citing an example, he said advertisers could potentially use the AI tools to make ad images “that work for different audiences. And it can save a lot of time and money”. TechCrunch reported that Meta also has plans to “create virtual worlds” using generative AI. “So previously, if I wanted to create a 3D world, I needed to learn a lot of computer graphics and programming. In the future, you might be able to just describe the world you want to create and have the large language model generate that world for you,” Mr Bosworth said.

The risk and reward of ChatGPT in cybersecurity

Unless you’ve been on a retreat in some far-flung location with no internet access for the past few months, chances are you’re well aware of how much hype and fear there’s been around ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI. Maybe you’ve seen articles about academics and teachers worrying that it’ll make cheating easier than ever. On the other side of the coin, you might have seen the articles evangelising all of ChatGPT’s potential applications. Alternatively, you may have been tickled by some of the more esoteric examples of people using the tool. One user, for example, got it to write an instruction guide for removing peanut butter sandwiches from a VCR in the style of the King James Bible. Another asked it to write a song in the style of Nick Cave; the singer was less than enthused about the results. But amidst all that hype and discussion, there hasn’t been nearly enough attention paid to the risks and rewards that AI tools like ChatGPT present in the cybersecurity arena. Understanding ChatGPT In order to get a clearer idea of what those risks and rewards look like, it’s important to get a better understanding of what ChatGPT is and what it’s capable of. ChatGPT (now in its latest version, ChatGPT-4, released on March 14th, 2023) is part of a larger family of AI tools developed by the US-based company OpenAI. While it’s officially called a chatbot, that doesn’t quite cover its versatility. Trained using both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques, it can do far more than most chatbots. As part of its responses, it can generate content based on all the information it was trained on. That information includes general knowledge as well as programming languages and code. As a result, it can, for instance, simulate an entire chat room; play games like tic-tac-toe; and simulate an ATM. More importantly, for businesses and other large organisations, it can help improve businesses’ customer service through more personalised, accurate messaging. It can even write and debug computer programs. Some of those, and other, features mean that it could both be a cybersecurity ally and a threat.

AI think tank calls GPT-4 a risk to public safety

An AI think tank has filed a complaint with the FTC in a bid to stop OpenAI from further commercial deployments of GPT-4. The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy (CAIDP) claims OpenAI has violated section five of the FTC Act—alleging the company of deceptive and unfair practices. Marc Rotenberg, Founder and President of the CAIDP, said: “The FTC has a clear responsibility to investigate and prohibit unfair and deceptive trade practices. We believe that the FTC should look closely at OpenAI and GPT-4. We are specifically asking the FTC to determine whether the company has complied with the guidance the federal agency has issued.” The CAIDP claims that OpenAI’s GPT-4 is “biased, deceptive, and a risk to privacy and public safety”. The think tank cited contents in the GPT-4 System Card that describe the model’s potential to reinforce biases and worldviews, including harmful stereotypes and demeaning associations for certain marginalised groups. In the aforementioned System Card, OpenAI acknowledges that it “found that the model has the potential to reinforce and reproduce specific biases and worldviews, including harmful stereotypical and demeaning associations for certain marginalized groups.” Furthermore, the document states: “AI systems will have even greater potential to reinforce entire ideologies, worldviews, truths and untruths, and to cement them or lock them in, foreclosing future contestation, reflection, and improvement.” Other harmful outcomes that OpenAI says GPT-4 could lead to include: Advice or encouragement for self-harm behaviours Graphic material such as erotic or violent content Harassing, demeaning, and hateful content Content useful for planning attacks or violence Instructions for finding illegal content The CAIDP claims that OpenAI released GPT-4 to the public without an independent assessment of its risks. Last week, the FTC told American companies advertising AI products: “Merely warning your customers about misuse or telling them to make disclosures is hardly sufficient to deter bad actors. Your deterrence measures should be durable, built-in features and not bug corrections or optional features that third parties can undermine via modification or removal.” With its filing, the CAIDP calls on the FTC to investigate the products of OpenAI and other operators of powerful AI systems, prevent further commercial releases of GPT-4, and ensure the establishment of necessary guardrails to protect consumers, businesses, and the commercial marketplace.

Biden: AI can help with difficult challenges, but risks must be addressed

President Biden believes that AI can help solve some of the world’s most difficult challenges, but says that risks to society, the economy, and national security must be addressed. In a meeting on Tuesday with the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, President Biden said that “AI can help deal with some very difficult challenges like disease and climate change, but we also have to address the potential risks to our society, to our economy, to our national security.” Biden’s comments came just a week after over 1,000 experts – including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak – released an open letter calling for a “pause” on large-scale AI development. The letter was released by the Future of Life Institute, an organisation dedicated to reducing the risk of “existential threats” caused by new technologies. While the President did not directly mention the institute’s letter, he did highlight the White House’s blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights, which was proposed in October 2022. The bill aims to ensure that essential protections are built into AI systems from the start to protect Americans’ rights, safety, and privacy. During the meeting, Biden reiterated his commitment to responsible innovation, appropriate guardrails, and protecting the privacy rights of Americans. He emphasised that tech companies have a responsibility to ensure that their products are safe before making them available to the public. Biden also stated that Congress should pass bipartisan privacy legislation to limit the personal data that tech companies collect on individuals, ban targeted advertising to children, and require companies to prioritise health and safety in the development of their products. When asked by a reporter whether he thinks AI is dangerous, Biden replied: “It remains to be seen. It could be.” President Biden’s remarks on AI underscore the importance of balancing the potential benefits of new technologies with their potential risks. His emphasis on responsible innovation and protecting Americans’ rights and safety is an essential reminder that AI must be developed and used with care. The blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights is a step in the right direction towards ensuring that the benefits of AI are realised while minimising the technology’s potential risks.

AI-powered testing systems can automatically build test cases based on established rules or by studying user behavior, guaranteeing that the digital experience fulfils the needs and expectations of customers. Automating the testing process Another area where AI-powered testing solutions shine is test execution. By modeling user behavior, engaging with the digital product, and reporting results, AI can automate the test execution process. It can automatically detect problems, track flaws, and generate reports. AI can also automate regression testing, which entails testing a digital product after modifications are made to ensure that the changes did not bring new faults. AI can detect portions of a digital product that require regression testing, build test cases, and automatically execute tests. Another area where AI can aid automated testing is performance testing. AI can automatically simulate user behavior, generate load, and monitor system performance, finding performance issues and bottlenecks. Finally, AI can enable continuous testing to ensure that it satisfies the appropriate quality, functionality, and user experience criteria.
