Is a good clear-out good for your mental health? And, if so, where do you even begin? This is something I ponder in this episode and it takes us all the way back to 2018 when I did a massive wardrobe edit as part of the #26Habits series. It wasn't just about a leaner wardrobe, it also revealed some other completely unexpected benefits that have stayed with me nearly five years later. Following my post on social media about being in recovery for an eating disorder I wanted to try to answer some questions that have come in from you, my most-excellent listeners, in the hope it’s helpful for those struggling with something similar. Why are we so judgemental about what and how other people eat? I mention it in this episode of Bullet Points after the backlash Gwyneth Paltrow received recently for talking through her daily diet. Now, whether her diet is nutritionally sound or not isn't really the point, it's the reaction to it that's piqued my interest and I'd love to know what you think... Also in this episode, your feedback on my conversation with Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-emma-guns-show/id1102982843?i=1000604893410 and a look ahead to a deeply personal episode I recorded with no guest, just you and me. One of the great privileges of creating this podcast is getting to see the world through the lens of other people’s experiences. Seeing the world through Sabrina’s eyes was utterly enthralling. She experienced homelessness in her teens, now holds one of the most senior positions in the Fire Brigade and has multiple qualifications making her an expert leading international expert on risk-critical decision-making in crises. I ask all my guests, ‘What’s your relationship like with risk?’ and as someone whose day job involves dealing with something as unpredictable as fire, Sabrina’s answers are a perspective I hadn’t heard before. What an incredible guest, and now friend, whose primary mission in life is to pay it forward. Sabrina’s book The Gender Bias is https://amzn.to/3kHDeAj available now. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583855258373361/ https://twitter.com/emmaguns https://www.instagram.com/emmaguns/ https://www.youtube.com/@TheEmmaGunsShow https://emmagunavardhana.com/ * Hosted on Acast. Well, it seems like a lot of us are people-pleasers and I'm so glad my conversation with Anna Mathur https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-emma-guns-show/id1102982843?i=1000603841844 was a balm for those of you who have felt exhausted and depleted by always doing for others. If this conversation was helpful you may also enjoy my chat with narcissism expert Dr Ramani Durvasula https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-emma-guns-show/id1102982843?i=1000538078531. This week I'm sharing some of the best beauty products to have come across my desk recently, plus I share a teaser from my conversation with Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton who holds one of the most senior positions in the UK fire service and has written about gender bias in her latest book. One thing about interviewing psychotherapists is how tempting it can be to open up about the things that I am personally struggling with, or have struggled with. It’s not something I intended to do but in navigating Anna Mathur’s life lessons we stumbled upon the territory of people pleasing and, well, that was it. Both of us have found ourselves crippled by the effects of people pleasing and these have shown up in Anna’s life in ways that have had a huge impact. I always open the show by asking my guests what their relationship with risk is like and it’s interesting that a big risk for Anna, and me, was to put ourselves first. If you’re afflicted with the disease to please then this episode is definitely for you. When it comes to alternative therapy I am, by nature and also from years of working as a journalist in the health, beauty and wellness space, a cynic. For years, I’d get drawn into to fads and trends by their razzle-dazzle and now, to avoid this, I like to see proof in the shape of data, clinical trials and evidence. So you may be surprised to see Poppy Delbridge, aka The Tapping Queen, as a guest on the show. Tapping is a form of therapy that involves tapping your face and upper body to release stress, minimise trauma and ‘raise your emotional baseline’. But, despite sounding ‘woo woo’ has a raft of evidence from neuroscience, and psychology that proves the claims around its benefits. This podcast is about learning from my guests' life lessons and given how integral tapping has been to Poppy, in times of trauma, change and flux, it was a fascinating insight into Poppy and how she has dealt with life’s challenges. Poppy’s book Tapping In https://amzn.to/3y7wteb is available now. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583855258373361/ https://twitter.com/emmaguns https://www.instagram.com/emmaguns/ https://www.youtube.com/@TheEmmaGunsShow https://emmagunavardhana.com/ * Hosted on Acast. I told you that you'd be punching the air after listening to Lauren Mahon's https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-emma-guns-show/id1102982843?i=1000601763641 episode and based on your feedback, it's clear you loved what she had to say, especially about how she's far less risk-averse on the other side of cancer. This week has been a busy week but I made time for lunch with my good friends Noella Gabriel and Rosie Green and my abs still genuinely hurt from laughing. If I give you one tip today it's to put lunch in the diary with someone you love. And finally, I share some other conversations I have coming up and what you can expect from the next episode with Poppy Delbridge. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583855258373361/ https://twitter.com/emmaguns https://www.instagram.com/emmaguns/ https://www.youtube.com/@TheEmmaGunsShow https://emmagunavardhana.com/ * Hosted on Acast. To know Lauren Mahon https://www.instagram.com/iamlaurenmahon/ is to love her. It’s as simple as that. And considering everything she’s been through in the last few years, she’s also a huge inspiration. Diagnosed with breast cancer at 31, she was the host of the hugely successful podcast You, Me and the Big C https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/you-me-and-the-big-c-putting-the-can-in-cancer/id1356165446 with her friends Rachel Bland and Dame Deborah James who have both since died. Lauren, on the other hand, has been in remission for over five years. I didn’t want this conversation to be about two huge, defining traumas; her cancer and losing her close friends and I’m so glad because we recorded this episode at a time when Lauren has never felt more hopeful and excited about the future. Though this podcast is about my guests sharing the life lessons they’ve learned from going through the tougher stuff in life, and how they’ve come out the other side, that doesn’t mean we have to plumb the darkest depths - and as you’ll hear in this conversation, there’s a lot of light and love! I challenge you to finish this episode and not a) love Lauren but also want b) to punch the air and potentially c) feel as though you can take over the world. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583855258373361/ https://twitter.com/emmaguns https://www.instagram.com/emmaguns/ https://www.youtube.com/@TheEmmaGunsShow https://emmagunavardhana.com/ * Hosted on Acast. You've shared some incredible feedback on my conversation with Dr Jim Down, which I share in this episode. Thank you so much for all your messages! It's been a busy week of podcasting and I have conversations with Poppy Delbridge, Anna Mathur and Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton coming up very soon. I also attended my friend Anita's book launch this week so if you like the sound of it, grab a copy of UGLY now. Next time I'm chatting to my friend Lauren Mahon and, among other things, we discuss how to move on after trauma. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583855258373361/ https://twitter.com/emmaguns https://www.instagram.com/emmaguns/ https://www.youtube.com/@TheEmmaGunsShow https://emmagunavardhana.com/ * Hosted on Acast. I love creating this podcast for many reasons but chief among them is the opportunity it affords me to speak to people with whom I might not necessarily cross paths in my every day. This has never been more true than with Jim Down, a consultant in critical care and anaesthesia at University College London Hospitals who was frontline during the Covid-19 pandemic, attended to former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko when he was poisoned with Polonium-210 in 2006 and was one of the first on the scene of the Hatfield train disaster. This show is about hearing how my guests have navigated the more challenging parts of life and come out the other side, and Jim’s stories and learnings are extraordinary. His openness about his own mental health and the challenges he’s had to overcome as a result of the cumulative stress of life in hospital wards, intensive care units and high-stress situations is levelling, to say the least. Jim is also extremely open, warm and thoughtful, and as you’d perhaps expect from someone who has to make life-or-death decisions, shows real compassion. Even as someone who saw the impact of the Covid-19 virus, he makes efforts to understand the people who now say it was a hoax, which feels extraordinarily magnanimous when you hear what he saw, first-hand in 2020. Dean Piper https://www.instagram.com/deanpiperisalive/! I can't lie, I enjoyed this conversation with Dean https://www.instagram.com/deanpiperisalive/ immensely and actually found it to be an incredibly cathartic experience too. Dean https://www.instagram.com/deanpiperisalive/ and I were both 'celebrity journalists' at a time when celebrity journalism was called-in to editors via brick phones and gathered on the dancefloor at nightclubs or in the loos at award ceremonies. It was the era of celebrity weddings, showbiz couples with portmanteau nicknames and when daily sales of newspapers and magazines running showbiz gossip ran into the millions. However, while it was fun for a while, about ten years ago Dean https://www.instagram.com/deanpiperisalive/ turned his back on 'that life'. In fact, he didn't just turn on his heel, he walked out with no job to go to, no plan and no idea what the future would hold. This conversation details why Dean https://www.instagram.com/deanpiperisalive/ has never looked back, why he felt it was time to leave and how disappointed he is that in the ten years since he left, celebrity journalism has become so murky and destructive. We discuss some of his biggest regrets while working on tabloids, how he got some of his juiciest scoops back in the day and what happens, and who stops calling when you walk away from the most powerful job in showbiz. If you enjoy Dean's https://www.instagram.com/deanpiperisalive/ insights here then you'll love his Substack https://deanpiper.substack.com where he's writing a weekly column about his life in showbiz. I'm so glad to welcome Estée Lalonde https://www.instagram.com/esteelalonde/ back to the podcast, especially as this conversation coincides with some exciting developments in her professional and personal life. There's her body care brand Mirror Water https://www.instagram.com/mirrorwater.earth/ and a new relationship... Her career is a truly incredible one: she followed her boyfriend to London, became a part of the beauty blogging community and has gone on to make her social media https://www.instagram.com/esteelalonde/ and Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@EsteeLalonde a wildly successful business. She has shared her life with millions of followers and as she evolves from influencer to businesswoman, she's opening up about the highs and lows of taking huge risks, knowing what you want from life, people and relationships and why you have to advocate for yourself. I've known Estée https://www.instagram.com/esteelalonde/ for a few years now and I always come away from time spent with her feeling better for having seen the world through her eyes and, I'm just going to say it, I think this might be the best conversation I've had with her in the time we've known each other. Estée https://www.instagram.com/esteelalonde/ is always honest, real and straight-talking so hearing her share her life lessons with no filter whatsoever was a real eye-opener. I learned a lot and I hope you do too! To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583855258373361/. Andrea McLean https://www.instagram.com/andreamclean1/ is one of those people you already feel as though you know. Not least because she's been a familiar face on British television for two decades but because she has such an easy, warm, open and welcoming way with everyone she meets. And let me tell you, in the flesh, this magnetism is even more charming than you could imagine. She is also blessed with a dry wit and an excellent side-eye! After years anchoring the liveliest panel on TV, the prime-time show Loose Women, she is now focused on her website and app This Girl is On Fire https://andreamclean.com/this-girl-is-on-fire/, which focuses on supporting women (and soon men) through midlife. It's not just her day job, it's a calling. Having navigated her own mental health struggles, crises of confidence and a constant drive to want to do better and be better, Andrea is committed to passing on and sharing everything that has worked for her with those who feel the same. I open each podcast by asking my guest 'what's your relationship like with risk?' and, as you can imagine, Andrea's answer, as someone who walked away from one of the most coveted jobs for women in broadcasting, is an incredible one... We discuss being in bad relationships, trying to make a bad thing work, knowing when to listen to advice - and when to ignore it - and why admitting you're wrong can sometimes be the greatest gift. Andrea was so open and honest and I'm thrilled to share this conversation with you... https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583855258373361/ https://twitter.com/emmaguns https://www.instagram.com/emmaguns/ https://emmagunavardhana.com/ * Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Emma answers listener questions sent in via the Facebook Group. 1. Of all the habits you’ve tried, which are the ones you have stuck with in the long term and find most beneficial, and why? 2. Are there any more contraception/hormone-related podcasts coming? I”m 38 and have just decided to come off the pill for no reason other than being fed up with pumping synthetic hormones into my body. 3. I’d be interested to know how your early mornings are going now that you’re in winter. I found winter very hard and my early mornings disappeared. Now that it’s summer again, in New Zealand, I’m motivated to get up early again. Maybe it’s about changing what you do in the cold and dark. Exercise seemed to be the last thing my body wanted to do. I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences. 4. I know this question will be hard to answer, maybe impossible, but what have you heard from your guest speakers (excluding myself) that most changed the way you think and what you most want others to know about? https://amzn.to/3BluTHU https://www.theecmethod.co.uk/ 5. How long do you give a new regime, either diet or fitness, before deciding it’s not working for you? 6. What is an achievable target for weight loss? For example, if you want to lose three stone, how long do you think is sufficient to achieve and keep it off? 7. How do you get motivated and stay motivated? 8. How do you get back after falling off the wagon when the mental hurdle seems so massive? I don’t know if I’m explaining it well, but it feels daunting and that also you’re beating yourself up for being a failure. I didn’t want to be overweight at 40 but here I am, at nearly 50, and even more overweight. 9. I always love finding out what surprising things have happened to people along the way. So my question would be, what did you expect to happen but didn’t. 10. What expectations did you have going into the new habits or routines that you made that were happily surprised to see were unrealistic or even unhealthy? For example, I think ‘health’ and ‘fitness’ are sold to us as huge problem solvers. Almost as if when we become fitter we have to stop worrying about X, Y and Z too. So I guess I’m wondering if that kind of thinking influenced any of your goals and/or plans to reach those goals. 11. How do you stop yourself from becoming fixated on healthy eating and fitness? 12. How do you make changes so that they just become habits? 13. How do you meal plan? When I go to a supermarket or try to plan weekly meals, I seem to forget all the foods I like. 14. How do you stick to a certain amount of calories per day without starting the cycle of restricting leading to binge eating? 15. How do you plan fun in your life? As I get older and kids’ social lives take priority, I feel my life is sadly lacking fun. I actually can’t think of fund stuff anymore. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583855258373361/ https://twitter.com/emmaguns https://www.instagram.com/emmaguns/ https://emmagunavardhana.com/ Get bonus content on Patreon https://open.acast.com/public/patreon/fanSubscribe/4206011 * Hosted on Acast. Trigger warning! This episode makes reference to rape and sexual assault. In this episode, Emma chats to Soma Sara https://www.instagram.com/somasara/, the multi-award-winning activist, author, speaker and CEO of the charity Everyone's Invited. Everyone's Invited began in 2020 when Soma https://www.instagram.com/somasara/ started to share her experiences of rape culture on Instagram. The space was opened up for everyone to contribute and the response was overwhelming. In this conversation, Emma and Soma https://www.instagram.com/somasara/ discuss their different perspectives on the subject, which vary wildly given that there is a twenty-year age gap between the two (Soma https://www.instagram.com/somasara/ is 24 and Emma is 44 at the time of recording). They discuss how rape culture has become so prevalent, the impact easily accessible porn has had on impressionable children, how behaviour in the playground has become sexualised and what parents can do to help. Emma certainly felt as though her eyes were opened and understood Soma https://www.instagram.com/somasara/'s urgency in needing to make changes so the situation doesn't get any worse. Soma https://www.instagram.com/somasara/'s book Everyone's Invited https://amzn.to/3OfVlYF is available now. In this episode, Emma chats to author, broadcaster and journalist Raphael Rowe https://www.instagram.com/raphaelrowe/. Raphael's story is unlike any other shared on The Emma Guns Show before. He spent 12 years in prison for crimes he didn't commit, sentenced to a life behind bars by a jury even though evidence proved he couldn't be the perpetrator. Emma wanted to find out from Raphael how he was able to find the focus to plead his case and overturn his conviction when it would have been so easy to become consumed by rage at the injustice of which he was a victim. During their conversation, Raphael shares what happened to him during those 12 years in prison, how he finally won his freedom and came out into a world that was completely different from the one he left behind, why he's now committed to ending the mistreatment of people within prison systems and why everybody deserves a second chance. Raphael hosts Inside the World's Toughest Prisons https://www.netflix.com/watch/81462398?trackId=255824129&tctx=0%2C0%2CNAPA%40%40%7Cc35726d8-b99b-4c9c-94f3-7387a8961f89-58028218_titles%2F1%2F%2Finside%20the%20world%27s%2F0%2F0%2CNAPA%40%40%7Cc35726d8-b99b-4c9c-94f3-7387a8961f89-58028218_titles%2F1%2F%2Finside%20the%20world%27s%2F0%2F0%2Cunknown%2C%2Cc35726d8-b99b-4c9c-94f3-7387a8961f89-58028218%7C1%2C%2C on Netflix.
