A Long Way to the Top - Rebecca Long - 751

It's a long way to the top alright, especially when it's Mt Everest we are talking about. Today's guest, Rebecca Long ticked that one off her bucket list in mid 2023 after taking a break from her usual world of banking and finance. Rebecca's two-month expedition took place amidst what turns out to have been one of the deadliest seasons on the mountain.  As I spoke to Rebecca the enormity of what is faced by mountaineers on Everest all became very real for me. It really hits home when you're hearing it straight from the horse's mouth, that the idea of such a physical and mental challenge and the actual experience really can be worlds apart.  Rebecca shared her experiences of the climb, the extreme weather conditions, the mental and physical preparation required, and the challenges faced during the climb, challenges which took the life of one of the participants in her group.  TIFFANEE COOK Linktree: linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches https://linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches Website: rollwiththepunches.com.au https://www.rollwiththepunches.com.au LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ http://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ Facebook: facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ http://www.facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ Instagram: instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast/ http://www.instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast Instagram: instagram.com/tiffaneeandco https://www.instagram.com/tiffaneeandco See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Trusting Nutrition Research in a Misinformation Age | Dr. Alan Flanagan, PhD - 750

Nutrition these days... What a minefield. Everyone's an expert, and the statement, is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.  For this conversation I wanted to find the seemingly impossible. Someone who could wade through the rot, pull no punches, and give it to us straight when it comes to how we might get some much-needed clarity on who to, and how to trust the overwhelming amount of conflicting information out there. Like, can we even trust 'science'? And if so, how? Alan Flanagan is just the man for the job, an indisputable-fact-minded academic who transitioned from a career in law to nutrition research. In this chat we talk about the importance of critical thinking and questioning claims made in the name of science, and Alan gives some insight into the problem of interpreting and trusting scientific information in the public sphere, especially with the rise of social media influencers who often provide misleading or sensationalist content under the guise of science. I hit him up for some rapid-fire specific nutrition topics like seed oils, sugar consumption, and various diet trends, with Alan debunking a couple of common myths and misunderstandings. We also touch on the psychological aspects of eating, such as the impact of one's relationship with food on health. Alan's approach to the conversation is grounded in evidence-based science and critical evaluation of research, a refreshing contrast to the often simplistic and sensationalist nutrition advice found in popular media.   SPONSORED BY TESTART FAMILY LAWYERS Website: testartfamilylawyers.com.au http://www.testartfamilylawyers.com.au DR. When Self-Help Is Unhelpful | Craig Harper - 749

Self-help: you've got your cozy armchair theories (think books, podcasts, all those courses and workshops) and then there's the get-your-hands-dirty, sweat-it-out kind of self-help... the kind where you actually have to do stuff, sometimes scary stuff, not just nod along to a theory. In this episode, Harps and I are on a rant to sift through some of the sometimes nothing but fluffy, feel-good self-help marshmallows and dig out the real-deal, sometimes uncomfortable, nuggets of wisdom that can genuinely shake things up in your life. So, buckle up and get ready to throw those cliches under the microscope and see if they're actually doing us any good.   SPONSORED BY TESTART FAMILY LAWYERS Website: testartfamilylawyers.com.au http://www.testartfamilylawyers.com.au CRAIG HARPER Website: craigharper.net http://www.craigharper.net TIFFANEE COOK Linktree: linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches https://linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches Website: rollwiththepunches.com.au https://www.rollwiththepunches.com.au LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ http://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ Facebook: facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ http://www.facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ Instagram: instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast/ http://www.instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast Instagram: instagram.com/tiffaneeandco https://www.instagram.com/tiffaneeandco See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Invisible Imprint: How Our Bodies Remember Trauma | Dr. Peter Levine - 748

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with Dr. Peter Levine, a globally renowned trauma therapy expert and the creator of Somatic Experiencing. Someone whose contributions to this field have been profoundly influential. In this conversation we discuss the complex nature of trauma, exploring how the body memorises and reacts to traumatic events. Dr. Levine provided deep insights, emphasising that trauma is not solely a mental phenomenon but also a physical experience that is embedded in our bodies. He highlights the critical need to learn the language of the body to navigate through the healing process. We reflect on the value of curiosity in healing and the significance of looking beyond just the cognitive aspects to include the body's role in trauma and recovery. Who'd have thought we could be influenced so heavily by memories, memories that are stored beyond our conscious awareness. No wonder trauma and healing can be such a complex minefield at times.  For anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of trauma and discovering how somatic experiencing, or body work, can serve as a potent tool for healing and personal growth, this episode is a must-listen!   TESTART FAMILY LAWYERS Website: testartfamilylawyers.com.au http://www.testartfamilylawyers.com.au DR. Rock Solid Olympic Dream | Campbell Harrison - 747

Campbell Harrison is an Aussie rock legend, but not the type you might think. Professional rock climbing is a thing... a thing that has made its way into being an Olympic sport, with its debut in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. And this year, our boy Campbell Harrison has nabbed himself a spot to represent our country in Paris 2024.  First clinging to the wall at 8 years old for fun is where it all started, and here we are some 18 years later at a level Campbell might never have assumed. We not only talk about the art and mindset of climbing (which as an adrenaline junkie myself I find fascinating), but we also touch on what it means for Campbell to have found himself to be somewhat of a role model for the LGBTQ community. Naturally comfortable in his own skin and naturally comfortable in the spotlight, Campbell shares his insights on the mental and emotional gymnastics it takes to perform on the wall under pressure, uncertainty and fear.  You might find yourself wanting to hit the wall yourself after listening in :)   TESTART FAMILY LAWYERS Website: testartfamilylawyers.com.au http://www.testartfamilylawyers.com.au TIFFANEE COOK Linktree: linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches/ https://linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches Website: rollwiththepunches.com.au https://www.rollwiththepunches.com.au LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ http://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ Facebook: facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ http://www.facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ Instagram: instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast/ http://www.instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast Instagram: instagram.com/tiffaneeandco https://www.instagram.com/tiffaneeandco     See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Disconnect to Reconnect | Mark LeBusque - 746

It's February and a lot of people jump on board Febfast for a variety of things to remain abstinent from. For me, it's the 24/7 data analysis that my Garmin watch blesses me with. Data tracking can be key to understanding and making progress... but, at what point might data become somewhat destructive?  Mark LeBusque and I reflect on data around a range of related topics in this chat, along with how and why we judge people and what makes us like (or dislike) them, and how understanding our strengths and personality styles (more data, incidentally) can help us work, grow, connect and conquer.    STANDOUT ASSESSMENT Take The Test: standout.tmbc.com https://m-standout.tmbc.com/standoutregistration?referralId=4&fbclid=IwAR0GIHUVB1bDQZK2zV37VtKWBiQIs4E1AKZrKE2NzpiFy9byd52qIIuUdvk TESTART FAMILY LAWYERS Website: testartfamilylawyers.com.au http://www.testartfamilylawyers.com.au MARK LEBUSQUE Website: marklebusque.com  http://www.marklebusque.com TIFFANEE COOK Linktree:  linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches/ https://linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches Website: rollwiththepunches.com.au https://www.rollwiththepunches.com.au LinkedIn:  linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ http://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ Facebook:  facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ http://www.facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ Instagram:  instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast/ http://www.instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast Instagram: instagram.com/tiffaneeandco https://www.instagram.com/tiffaneeandco     See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What Sucks More Than A Pain In The Nuts? | Joel Sardi - 745

What could suck more than a pain in the nuts? Well, listen up because Joel Sardi is about to answer that question.  Returning from his years in military combat unscathed, only to face a freak tragedy that left him a C5 quadriplegic. Like all my favourite conversations, this one with Joel was deep, raw, and real, as we talked about bouncing back from rock bottom, embracing the new normal, and the rollercoaster of emotions and physical challenges that come with getting dealt such a terribly shit hand.  Joel's candidness about his struggles and triumphs since his injury is truly enlightening. He shares insights on what he's learned around the importance of communication, the unwavering support he received from his family, and his evolving perspective on life post-injury. We also explored the physical aspects of his recovery, his ongoing rehabilitation efforts, and how his injury altered his relationships and interactions with others. When Love and Generosity Turn Into Self-Abandonment | Bobby Cappuccio - 743

First chat with Bobby for 2024 and we had a ripper. Headfirst into some personal and thought-provoking topics. Bobby reflected on his hectic life recently, highlighting how crucial it is to recognize and voice our own needs. And I throw the question on the table - how do we give to others without losing ourselves in the process? Where is the line between generosity and self-abandonment? We also explored the tricky terrain of trust, especially in relationships. I shared my own thoughts on trusting others and, more importantly, trusting myself, while Bobby’s insights on self-forgiveness and accountability really hit the mark! We didn't just keep it heavy though, we talked about the power of being present and appreciating the little things. I was reminded of the beauty in my everyday surroundings and how important it is to stay connected to what brings us joy. This conversation with Bobby, as they always are, was yet another reminder of the continuous journey of personal growth and self-discovery. Are you still setting goals, implementing what worked for the but pulling up short of the desired outcome? Come on, put that cookie-cutter down and take my hand...  I'm back with PH360 Personalised Health super-stars, Anne Larsen and Dr. Cam McDonald to explore the concept that success and goal achievement, like all things, isn't one-size-fits-all. We discuss how understanding our unique personal traits and tendencies (those ones that are biologically hardwired) can significantly influence our approach to goals, rather than blindly following others' methods. We discuss how is deeply linked to feelings and the need to understand our individual triggers and preferences. In this conversation we expand on epigenetics and the role of our biology in shaping our behaviour and response to goal setting, recognising the importance of creating an environment conducive to these biological needs and the profound impact it can have on our success and outcomes.  So, if your first month of '2024 is my year to succeed' isn't flowing with the ease and grace you anticipated, perhaps this conversation will offer up valuable insights!   TIFFANEE COOK Linktree: linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches https://linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches Website: rollwiththepunches.com.au https://www.rollwiththepunches.com.au LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ http://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ Facebook: facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ http://www.facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ Instagram: instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast/ http://www.instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast Instagram: instagram.com/tiffaneeandco https://www.instagram.com/tiffaneeandco See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Inside Psychopathic Minds | Dr. Kevin Dutton - 741

"The terms 'psychopath', 'sociopath', and 'narcissist' are often heard in today's society. Many of us have experiences or stories about encounters with those who exhibit traits associated with these psychological profiles. Today's conversation features Dr. Kevin Dutton, an expert whose research into psychopathy has gained significant attention. Dr. Dutton is well-known for his bestselling book, , in which he explores the concept that certain traits typically associated with psychopathy can in fact have a positive spin. His work challenges the common perception, heavily influenced by media, that psychopaths are predominantly serial killers or cold-blooded criminals. Instead, he unpacks the complexities of (and potential wisdom to be gained from) psychopathy. Buckle up and grab a pen and notepad too, as Kevin also guides us through an assessment to explore where you and I might just fall on the spectrum of psychopathic traits. The Courage to Forgive | Jem Fuller - 740

In this episode, I have a heart-to-heart with the incredible Jem Fuller. We really dive into some big topics like mental health, the wild journey of parenting, and how life-changing it can be to truly embrace self-acceptance and forgiveness. Jem opens up with some stories and insights from a community event he was involved in, focusing on the tough topic of suicide, particularly among men, and highlights the importance of having a solid support system. We also have an honest chat about the complexities of parenting in today's fast-paced world (as clearly, I'm an expert!). We explore how even the small things parents do can have unintended impacts on their kids and how our best intentions don't always align with their experiences. A major part of our conversation delves into forgiveness and reaching a place of peace with who you are at any moment. I dig into Jem's thoughts on how to let go of hard feelings and find forgiveness, even when forgiveness seems the toughest. A 2024 Mini-Coaching Session | Tiff Cook - 737

This podcast ep was sparked by some thoughts on a mind-bending book I've been getting stuck into this week, "The Courage to be Disliked" by Ichiro Kishimi. Big thanks to our pal Mark LeBusque for the killer recommendation! Reflecting on the past year, one thing's crystal-clear - life's a bloody rollercoaster, right? Instead of chasing that elusive and unattainable perfect, stress-free life, why aren't we embracing the chaos? During a stroll, I mulled over some New Year's self-reflection questions and one key question stuck with me: What have I stated I want to change but haven't? This led to a deep dive into identifying obstacles, intentions, and committing to action. So, I'm throwing out an invite for a mini-coaching session. Let's set some solid intentions for 2024 and turn aspirations into actions, shall we? With that question in mind, I unpack some of the following: __ __ Jump in, let's make 2024 the year of actionable change! The Joy Thief: How OCD Steals Your Happiness & How To Get It Back - Penny Moodie - 736

It took Penny Moodie a whopping 23 years to get a diagnosis for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Over two decades riding a mental health rollercoaster of intrusive thoughts and the mental or physical compulsions that follow. The stigma and misconceptions surrounding OCD make this type of delayed diagnosis all too common.  'I'm so OCD' seems at times to be a pretty familiar off-hand remark from every second person who likes to throw the label on their little quirks and habits without too much thought, however this is the first in-depth conversation I've had on the show regarding obsessive-compulsive disorder, and it raised a lot of questions around how we can differentiate between anxiety on this type of clinical disorder.  Penny used her experience to dive deep and write her book The Joy Thief (yep, I flogged the title for this episode too) where she speaks to other OCD sufferers, as well as some of the world's leading OCD doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists to put together a resource to help close the potential 23-year gap on sufferers getting some solid help.    SPONSORED BY TESTART FAMILY LAWYERS Website: testartfamilylawyers.com.au http://www.testartfamilylawyers.com.au PENNY MOODIE Website: instagram.com/penny_moodie/ https://www.instagram.com/penny_moodie/ TIFFANEE COOK Linktree: linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches https://linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches Website: rollwiththepunches.com.au https://www.rollwiththepunches.com.au LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ http://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ Facebook: facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ http://www.facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ Instagram: instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast/ http://www.instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast Instagram: instagram.com/tiffaneeandco https://www.instagram.com/tiffaneeandco See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the midst of life's everyday minutiae, 2012 emerged as a defining moment for Candice Walker. What started as the discomfort of a toothache unraveled into a life-altering revelation. 3 Minutes To Better Days | Tiff Cook - 734

Imagine if you could invest just three minutes a day and the outcome was having better days! A better attitude, more gratitude, no platitudes (ok, I just really just wrote that one because it rhymes), less stress and more joy & positivity. Well, that's what I've experienced since putting this journaling prompt into practice last month and much to my delight, it DID turn out to be no platitude after all. More of the good stuff and less of the crap stuff.  So, as always, I'm sharing it with you in this episode. Answering the Call: Mick Cummins and the Police Veterans' Lifeline - Mick Cummins - 733

Meet Mick Cummins, the unsung hero of police veteran peer support. Now, this guy's no big shot; he's as humble as they come. A career in policing that spans decades, with stints in Iraq training the locals thrown in for good measure. Mick started leaning into supporting his colleagues early on, and once he hung up his police hat he kicked things into high gear. Teaming up with the brilliant Vicky Key, they set up the very first peer support network for police veterans and after several meetings with former Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton, they birthed what we now know as Police Veterans Victoria. Mick has touched the lives of countless first responders. No doubt, his empathy and knack for being there when it matters most have saved more lives than we can count. In this chat, Mick share's it all... he's raw, he's honest, and it's an absolute ripper. Get ready for a conversation that goes beyond the surface with this legend. Storms Don't Last Forever | Gem Gale - 732

So, picture this... I ran into Gem Gale recently, and she was rocking it on stage, sharing her incredible journey. Get this, she's just 16 but speaks like a seasoned pro. Why? 'Cause in those 16 years, she's already tackled more waves in life than you'd like to imagine, earning herself the spotlight and the right to spill some wisdom. Gem's not your typical teen. Her folks? Three cancer diagnoses, and one is all too current. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. School, learning, friendships... you name it, she's faced it. Oh, and throw in a surprise Dyslexia diagnosis for good measure. But here's the kicker: Gem's got this innate ability at 16 to turn her challenges into life lessons. Sure, she has her share of crappy days, just like the rest of us. But what sets her apart is how she's turned those curveballs into gold. And if that's not quite enough to knock your socks off, Gem (the 16-year-old Dyslexic) just published her first book, "Storms Don't Last Forever." BOOM! It's a must-read, especially for kids in school looking for someone who gets their world. Trust me, this girl's got the insights and perspective to make you think twice about your own storms. First They Killed My Father – Surviving The Cambodian Genocide | Loung Ung - 726

In today's episode, we delve into the harrowing story of survival during the 1970s Cambodian Genocide, focusing on Loung Ung's remarkable journey. Imagine your world being torn apart as a child, witnessing the Khmer Rouge's invasion of Phnom Penh in April 1975, forcing two million people to flee, with death awaiting those who resisted. Loung's life took a tragic turn when her father was taken by soldiers. Following his capture, her mother made a heart-wrenching decision, sending Loung and her siblings in different directions, urging them to pass as orphans. From that moment, Loung never saw her family again. By the age of seven, she found herself recruited as a child soldier, a testament to the unimaginable challenges she faced. What makes this story even more extraordinary is the connection it shares with Hollywood. Collaborating with Loung, Angelina Jolie co-wrote and produced the Netflix film 'First They Killed My Father.' Their friendship blossomed when Jolie first read Loung's memoir and reached out to her. Loung's resilience serves as a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome the harshest circumstances with strength and courage, all while maintaining gratitude and kindness. Normalising Disability - Lisa Cox - 723

In Australia, nearly 20% of the population has a disability, but you wouldn't gather that from the way the media represents this diverse group. Take Lisa Cox, for instance. At the age of 24, she faced a sudden brain hemorrhage, leading to three weeks in a coma and two months on life support. Lisa battled pneumonia, heart attacks, and uncontrollable seizures as her organs shut down. At one point, her family was faced with the heartbreaking decision to potentially turn off her life support. Miraculously, her brain began to recharge, defying the odds. Throughout a year of hospitalization, Lisa underwent numerous surgeries, from open heart surgery to the amputation of a leg, toes, and nine fingertips, along with a hip replacement. Today, she lives with permanent brain damage, over 25% blindness, epilepsy, and deals with fatigue and osteoarthritis. But none of these challenges have halted Lisa's journey. With a solid background in marketing, Lisa has transformed into a passionate advocate for disability rights. Her mission? To significantly boost the representation of people with disabilities in mainstream media.   SPONSORED BY TESTART FAMILY LAWYERS Website: testartfamilylawyers.com.au http://www.testartfamilylawyers.com.au LISA COX Website: lisacox.co http://www.lisacox.co TIFFANEE COOK Linktree: linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches https://linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches Website: rollwiththepunches.com.au https://www.rollwiththepunches.com.au LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ http://www.linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ Facebook: facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ http://www.facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ Instagram: instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast/ http://www.instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast Instagram: instagram.com/tiffaneeandco https://www.instagram.com/tiffaneeandco See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
