Edward joins the show to discuss his novel, his experience in the Space Shuttle Simulator, and what would really happen if some of our fears came to light. **** Before taking the plunge in 2004 into full-time writing, technologist turned author EDWARD M. LERNER spent thirty years in high tech at every level from engineer to senior vice president. Many novels later, he’s glad (and still just slightly surprised) that he leaped. He worked at such techie havens as Bell Labs, Hughes Aircraft, and Northrop Grumman—and at a long-gone start-up of which you’ve likely never heard. He delivered high-tech products and systems to government agencies (including NASA, the FBI, and the Defense Department) and commercial customers as varied as AT&T and McDonald’s. Along the way, he visited a satellite factory, flew the space shuttle training simulator, wandered about the space station trainer, and watched a space shuttle launch. Sooner or later, all that experience shows up in his fiction. Lerner’s novels run the gamut from technothrillers like (solar-power satellites), (medical nanotech), and (AI) to traditional science fiction, like his series, to (with bestselling author Larry Niven) the space epic series. Ed’s fiction has been nominated for Hugo, Prometheus, and Locus awards, and won the inaugural Canopus Award. Ed’s short fiction has appeared in major science fiction magazines, anthologies, and collections. His short story “Grandpa?” became the award-winning short film “The Grandfather Paradox https://nsi-canada.ca/2012/04/the-grandfather-paradox/.” He also writes nonfiction, most notably . He also teaches the occasional writing class, blogs regularly on the state of science and SF. He has spoken at, among venues, the Library of Congress and the US Naval Academy. His fiction has been translated into ten languages. The varied career(s) didn’t just happen: Ed’s education is almost as eclectic, with degrees in physics, computer science, and business. Lerner is a member of the Science-fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and SIGMA (not an acronym, and sometimes known as “The Science Fiction Think Tank”). On this episode, I sat down with Phyllis Leavitt to discuss Americas Mental Health this week. We dig deep into why her new book America in Therapy is so timely. **** When I became a psychotherapist, I never imagined I would one day be entering a “political” arena. But the more I worked with widespread family dysfunction and its horrifying legacy of pain and violence, the more I realized that the greatest threat to our survival as a country and as a species is our declining. I knew what we learned about healing family violence can and must be applied to healing America. I felt compelled to leave the confines of my office and speak to a broader audience. I wanted to share my message of urgency to get ourselves on a path of healing, and I wanted to share a message of Hope that we can restore ourselves to Safety, Peace, and Love by healing the wounds we have suffered and the wounds we have inflicted that keep a cycle of violence going. I wrote for all those hungry for this message. I graduated from Antioch University with a Master’s in Psychology and Counseling in 1989. I co-directed a family-based sexual abuse treatment program called Parents United in Santa Fe, New Mexico, until 1991 and then went into private practice full-time for the next 30-plus years. I have worked extensively with abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, their aftermath, and some of the most important elements for healing. Texting has certainly become an easy way to communicate. However, what happens when a mother saves the texts to her sons? The result, “Text Messages To My Sons” by author Tammy J. Cohen. Audrey and I discuss her book, American Wolf: From Nazi Refugee to American Spy as well as how time off forced her to look at life in a different way. ***** Growing up in New York in the late 1960s, Audrey Birnbaum assumed that watching Holocaust documentaries was a perfectly normal family activity. On her first day of elementary school, Audrey sat in the cafeteria, unwrapped her liverwurst sandwich, and excitedly told her new classmates about her public television proclivities. Her Brady Bunch-watching peers had never heard of PBS, but they had heard of PB&J (and they werent too keen on liverwurst either). They made it abundantly clear: Audreys childhood was, in fact, not normal at all. We will never know whether it was schoolyard bullying or watching tragic Shoah documentaries that was responsible for Audreys acute sensitivity to others; but that empathy may have helped pave the way for her choice of medicine as a career. Audrey chose to specialize in Pediatric Gastroenterology - for who needed more help than children; and where could anyone feel more suffering than in ones gut? Day in and day out, she watched intricate family dynamics play out in the context of fragile health. Audrey listened to each patients story until she could retell it with clarity and give it meaning. Through witnessing and recording these tender dramas, the seeds of writing had been planted. Shortly after her fathers death in 2018, Audrey stumbled upon his extensive notes detailing his childhood escape from Nazi Germany. Audrey felt compelled to start writing his riveting story - a story addressing themes that are pressingly relevant today. While "American Wolf" deals with tragedy and loss, it punctuates the triumph of the human spirit. It is a memoir of Holocaust survival, a family drama, an immigration tale, and an often funny coming-of-age story that is sure to have an impact on anyone who has experienced prejudice, displacement, or questions about their identity. As she grew up listening to the sound of her own drumbeat. She borrowed her first book on Wicca when she was 13 and her first tarot deck at 16. Then, at the age of18, she was free to truly study her Spirit Lead path of Witchcraft, Psychic Development, and Energy Healing at a local shop that was located in Indianapolis, IN. Nick and I discuss his book Executive Loneliness ******* Executive depression, anxiety, and isolation – and the substance abuse, family breakdowns, poor physical health, self-harm, and suicide that can all too frequently result – were a major issue long before most of us had even heard the word “coronavirus”. I know this for a fact because three years ago, I myself went through a severe breakdown. At the time, I was performing very well in my career and had recently been placed in Singapore by my company. Over the previous decade, however, I’d been unexpectedly laid off from senior roles working in Indonesia and Vietnam. I couldn’t shake the paranoia that no matter how good my performance was, I could be retrenched at any moment. I lived on edge – and drinking took the edge off. When I first moved to Singapore, I was all alone in a foreign country, so I sought solace in alcohol and the superficial social circle of my local bar. I stopped exercising and gained 20kg within a few months of arriving in this country. It wasn’t the wonderful food here that did it – no, it was the booze. Drinking heavily at the end of most days was, to my mind, a reward and a form of therapy, but in fact it only left me feeling more imbalanced, lonely and disconnected. Psychosomatic disorders and my unhealthy lifestyle began to affect me physically. I felt I couldn’t get any more down and even made a will in preparation for my death, which I thought could come at any time, despite being only 43 years of age. I’d hit an all-time low. Finally, I acknowledged that I had to do something. I had to speak to someone. I actually consider myself lucky for having a drinking problem, because that meant I found my way to Alcoholics Anonymous. AA has been an invaluable source of support, helping give me the strength to remain sober these past two-and-a-half years. Getting back into exercise and participating in triathlons, I gradually regained my physical fitness, which in turn led to me achieving better mental balance. But I think the thing that helped me most was “paying it forward” and devoting time to service – giving back. For me, that meant contributing a portion of my time to an organization called SOS, Samaritans of Singapore. SOS provides emotional support to people in crisis, individuals who might be depressed and thinking about suicide, or who have been affected by the suicide of someone close to them. The suicide of a close friend when I was in the early stages of my recovery came as a real shock. No one knew he was feeling such despair. He suffered in silence, as so many high-powered executives do (especially men). He hadn’t told anyone about his depression or dark thoughts – and that was a terrible wake-up call for me. Marc talks about his lifelong struggle with skinny fat, while doctors see him as fit. We talk about body image and the role media plays in it. ********** I was born in a body that genetically lacked muscles/muscle mass, almost everywhere. Genetically, is common in my family. Even though I was always a very active kid, regularly playing soccer & tennis, walking to & swimming at the local pool, etc. at around age 8 I began to notice the skinny fat all over my body where there should be muscle/mass. As puberty hit, the fat only got worse. Because I was within my safe BMI, the doctors paid no attention. And because obesity is common in our family, my parents did not give it a second thought. After failing to find any help with the arbitrary, subjective, baseless, unscientifically debunked body types including the somatypes/three body types - endomorph, ectomorph, mesomorph - and hormone body types, Kibbe body types, triangle body types, 10 body types, etc., I began the Body Type Science research. I am not alone. The obesity epidemic is directly related to genetics & Body Type Science, not just eating too much & laziness. After winning the national collegiate skydiving championships, I became cocky. Not just in skydiving but in life. Then I had a terrible accident, they said I wouldnt walk normally ever, & I couldnt go back to school. I went anyway, go on with my life, and learned super important lessons about humility and what I can do. The crash landing became one of the most important things. Before that, I was a terrible student in school, I didnt fit in. I knew I wasnt ready for college so I dropped out to join the Army at 17. Best thing I ever did for myself. I was in a failing marriage, the economy was down, and I couldnt get engineering work. I moved to Florida from Michigan by myself to take over an old skydiving center. My whole life changed, it opened up multiple entrepreneurial opportunities and set the path… Bigger changes or forks in the road later but these are all pretty dramatic with good lessons.
