(2:00) Vinnie has been in remission and avoided chemo for 17 years by leading a ketogenic lifestyle. There are all kinds of side effects from chemotherapy, even though it can save people. There have been several theories of disease. (8:00) NCI states that cancer is a genetic disease of dysregulated cell growth, called the somatic mutation theory. Research has shown that damage to organelles causes mutations in cells. The treatment of cancer as a metabolic disease also allows people to participate in the management of their disorder. He explains the importance of oxygen and energy and how it affects the cells. (11:00) This is known as the mitochondrial metabolic theory of cancer. Dr. Seyfried explains some highly interesting experiments and theories. (14:00) Once there is an agreement on the mitochondria metabolic theory, treatment for cancers could be much less toxic and more manageable. (17:00) Cancer and lifestyle have been studied extensively. The idea is to reduce or eliminate the cancer through diet and medication that target the fermentation metabolism. They discuss glutamine and its uses in the body. (22:30) The Glucose Ketone Index What kind of diet and supplementation can help those who may have cancer? (27:30) The Glucose Ketone Index (GKI) calculator and how it works is explained. How the GKI happens can vary per person, but if you can keep the GKI measurement at 2.0 mmol or below, you can put pressure on the tumor cells. (29:00) Each person is their own experiment. Vinnie asks Dr. Seyfried to explain ketone measurements and monitors. (32:30) He explains some of the factors in various genes and what they mean, like in BRCA in women. There may be more options rather than getting radical surgery. They discuss the frustration of some doctor’s approaches to other diseases. (40:00) Type 2 diabetes has replaced smoking as the number one risk factor for cancer! (43:15) They discuss the challenges of today’s diet and lifestyle. (46:00) Low-cost and convenience foods are taking their toll on society’s health. Give people the opportunity to make their own choices. Many doctors need to be re-educated, and people need to know all their options. (50:30) Processed food and glucose are a highly addictive force on the brain. (51:00) Dr. Seyfried is a professor who shares information about and is developing a protocol, which he hopes will be available soon. [libsyn_podcast id=30504848] PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES ON YOUTUBE - Running the Asylum After sharing thoughts about caffeine & Vinnie’s new neighbor, they discuss getting daily steps in. (3:00) They were sent an infographic poster from “CardioSmart.” (12:00) It describes how much sugar people ate 100 years ago vs now—from 2 lbs per year to over 150 lbs per year, which is 3 lbs. weekly! Anna describes other items on the poster. The poster is a general infographic about sugar, but it also tells approximately how much sugar you “should” have. The amount suggested is low, but approximately what is found in a can of soda. The poster is sponsored in part by Coca-Cola. So the underlying message appears to be, that you can lower sugar, but still have room for soda. It’s not unlike Barilla Pasta sponsoring a study that says pasta is good for you. It appears that the inmates are running the asylum. You can let food companies know you disapprove of their products simply by not buying them. Choose with your wallet. The ExpoWest Experience They explain what it is. (29:00) They talk about premade cookies you can buy at grocery store bakeries. (33:00) Anna shares her Expo West experience while running her Eat Happy Kitchen booth. (35:15) She’s been presenting to all kinds of buyers and investors who are very interested. Getting the Right Advice with Amy Berger - Episode 2465

Episode 2465 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich welcomes author and Certified Nutrition Specialist Amy Berger and they discuss getting the right advice, stalls, and more. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS   YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Getting the Right Advice Vinnie tries to avoid guest experts who sell programs. (2:00) He feels some of them become gimmicky to sell their program. They discuss whether their efforts to correct misinformation and encourage low-carb is getting through to the masses. (5:00) The Ketogenic diet is therapeutic for so many conditions, but snake-oil types of “influencers” and other social media platforms negatively affect the message. The negative messaging prevents people from getting accurate information. Amy and Vinnie agree that it gets discouraging, but the importance and the success stories keep them going. (11:00) They chat a bit about regenerative farming. (16:30) At what point did the information change from “eat meat” to low-fat, high-carb—like pasta? (21:00) The low-carb way of eating is good and works with how the body is meant to. (25:00) Low-carb and the ketogenic approach work in tune with the body. People who don’t understand biochemical science probably shouldn’t be in charge of making policy about health. (26:00) What bothers Amy the most is when medical practitioners who should know better are giving bad advice, or closing themselves off to accurate information. People have trouble getting the right advice. If you want the benefits of low-carb, you have to stay low-carb. (30:00) Amy emphasizes that there are variations that can be done depending on the individual; however, that doesn’t mean eating things like junk food. (32:00) Other people must stay strictly ketogenic to treat a medical condition. Adjusting the Mindset They address the idea of food restriction. (36:00) Restriction is in the eye of the beholder; when you are satisfied with real food, it doesn’t feel restricting. Amy reviews the topics of her three books. (44:00) She is working on a fourth book about thyroid health. You can find all three books in   here: (with Dr Eric Westman) ,   and Vinnie asks about supplementation and thyroid health. (48:00) She reviews what may help. Many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism can be debilitating; she knows this firsthand. Depression, even apathy, can be a serious symptom. Nothing Works Like Hard Work - Episode 2460

Episode 2460 - On this Monday's show Vinnie Tortorich and Anna Vocino discuss fitness goals, how nothing works like hard work, semaglutide drugs, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2024/03/nothing-works-like-hard-work-episode-2460 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES ON YOUTUBE - Nothing Works Like Hard Work Today's episode talks about aerobics, but Vinnie has some other things first. (2:30) He feels like there are a lot of doctors saying stuff just to be controversial and get more followers. You need both anaerobic and aerobic exercise! A lower resting heart rate (low 50s) is a good goal—but it takes aerobics to get there. Lean muscle mass has everything to do with longevity. (6:30) What does “fit” Mean? (11:00) It depends on your goals and what you are prepping for. Vinnie and Anna discuss “Leg Day” options. (13:00) Vinnie has been watching "The Family Stallone" show. (15:00) He shares what he loves about the show and the Stallone brothers. Fitness Q & A Anna shares some fitness questions. (28:30) For even more details, go back to podcast . What are some exercises for shoulder and knee pain? It depends on the point of pain, but Vinnie gives some generalized suggestions. Anna shares some shoulder concerns she has. (36:30) She shares some pain she’s been having. (To get the full effect, you may need to refer to the episode video.) There’s a question about ketosis and gluconeogenesis. (41:00) They are not the same thing. There is nothing you can eat with impunity, even protein and fats. There are many people across the internet who claim to be low-carb experts. However, they confuse the message with the constant “hacks” they recommend. If there is too much gluconeogenesis, it means protein intake is too high. (44:30) Anna shares some observations about GLP-1 and the state of ketosis. (48:00) Ketosis is nature’s GLP-1! But GLP-1 (semaglutide) has horrible side effects, like slowing down how digestion works. Vinnie will always tell you the truth. Anna’s upcoming Eat Happy Italian book is on the way. Change for the Better with Dr. Georgia Ede - Episode 2459

Episode 2459 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich welcomes psychiatrist Dr. Georgia Ede to discuss how the proper diet is therapeutic, creates change for the better, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2024/03/change-for-the-better-with-georgia-ede-episode-2459 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS   YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Sugars and Oxidative Stress More kids than ever are presenting with psychological problems. (2:00) Vinnie mentions Robyn Dobbins who openly shares how diet has improved her mental health symptoms. People are feeding their brains improperly. (4:30) There have been decades of misinformation, so treatment has been off. Everyone deserves the right information upfront rather than having to go through multiple medications. (7:00) Georgia goes through her personal history and how she stumbled onto dietary health changes. Vinnie asks her for more details on those changes. Sweeteners have a lot of side effects. (16:00) Sugar is the only addictive substance that society sanctions for children. (20:00) It is not only addictive, it is physically damaging to the brain. (24:00) It creates oxidative stress and insulin resistance. Refined flours do the same by causing a glycogen load; as a result, your insulin is up longer. (25:00) Most people are metabolically broken, so sugars and carbs are even more harmful. If your body “needs” sugar, your body will make it. Fats and protein are essential, but carbs are not. (31:00) The FDA recommends a bunch of nonsense. And now our gut health is a topic that needs to be paid attention to. Change for the Better Vinnie knows people whose adult kids are still having issues but refuse to believe that diet can help. (38:00) Georgia always uses dietary interventions first and she has found them to be the most effective for her clients (41:00) There are certain foods the brain needs. It’s not just junk food that hurts, but also foods we’ve been told are healthy that aren’t (like whole grains). Dr. Ede's book addresses dietary therapy as a first step. (45:00) They discuss many different things that have been happening in the news are examples of declining mental health. (48:00) Bad mental health has become so common we think of it as totally normal. (50:00) Vinnie recently has heard about “safe rooms” at college—people are developmentally and emotionally less resilient. (53:00) Vinnie also worries about degenerative brain disease, CTE, and brain health. Vinnie asks how you get more N=1 cases on the books to demonstrate the advantages of diet and mental health. Changing your diet is change for the better. You can find Dr. Ede at . You can also find a clinician’s directory on her website. Another resource is the Charlie Foundation: The keto diet is safe, but there is still a transition, esp if you are on medication. Look for Vinnie’s NSNG® VIP Community and sign up for the waitlist! They Don't Know to Say No - Episode 2458

Episode 2458 - On this Wednesday's show Vinnie Tortorich and Gina Grad discuss school lunches, how kids don't know to say no, hydration drinks, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2024/03/they-dont-know-to-say-no-episode-2458 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS   YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - They Don't Know to Say No Gina’s husband is obsessed with Vinnie’s UltraFats. (2:00) He uses them during all his training to fuel up, and so does Vinnie. As long as you have protein in your small intestine, your body will not catabolize muscle while doing training. (3:00) You don’t need to load up on carbs. Another great use is for travel! (5:00) Gina started making her child’s lunch because of all the processed foods that the school lunches contained. (9:00) Fois gras is banned in California because of the force-feeding of geese to make their livers fatty. Yet it is somehow acceptable to have school lunches be processed foods every day, which can lead to fatty liver, among other things. When a kid is hungry at school, they will eat what is in front of them, especially if it is chemically engineered to taste good. They don't know to say "no" to them! Vending machines in school became the topic of a South Park episode—about “Prime” beverage. (16:00) The episode is inappropriate for kids, but Gina wants parents to be aware of what is out there. President Bill Clinton was able to get soda out of vending machines at school. However, companies just filled them with juice and energy drinks instead. Vinnie shares a story about climbing with his nephews. (18:00) One nephew learned the hard way that maybe Vinnie was right about properly fueling your body. Gina shares the ingredients of the Prime hydration drink. (24:00) As you would guess, some of the ingredients are harmful, like cyanocobalamin. The kids are taken by the marketing. Yet the whole purpose of health insurance is to prevent your family from being in financial distress! The healthcare system is incentivized to reject claims. (12:45) Most people feel like they have no power against the huge health insurance companies. You can push back and get reimbursed, but it can take a lot of effort. Andrew has figured out how to work around the standard health insurance system, yet keep costs down. (16:00) Vinnie asks for more details about CrowdHealth.  (21:30) A lot of it is based on negotiation with hospitals and community contributions. Getting Called Out - Episode 2454

Episode 2454 - On this Monday's show Vinnie Tortorich and Anna Vocino discuss companies getting called out, leading by example, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2024/02/getting-called-out-episode-2454 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES ON YOUTUBE - Reminiscing & Producing on the Fly The duo starts reminiscing about the early days of the podcast. (2:00) Anna started writing her first cookbook and learned to do her own photography. They chat about the history of “producing on the fly.” They have switched to a different platform, and sound and video have improved. Vinnie has confirmed through a source that he is being shadow-banned. There’s a question about the olive oil in a popular coffee chain beverage. There is a UC Davis study that lists uncut olive oils. (14:30) However, the study is several years old now; as a result, they are not sure how current the list of good olive oil brands is. Anna recommends a deep dive into various brands; any reliable producer should be transparent about their process. Clive Prosumer espresso machine is Vinnie’s favorite. (Clive doesn't sponsor the show). (17:00) Getting Called Out General Mills has been called out in an article by Consumer Reports due to plastics in some of their foods. (20:00) In " addresses this topic. Podcast guest Mike Keen’s (ep. 2375) research around Greenland reveals plastics were found in seal poop in one of the more pristine places on Earth. (21:00) Anna is disturbed by phthalates in some of General Mills’ foods—how does it get there? (23:00) Phthalates make plastics more durable; however, they are considered a “forever chemical." This means they do not leave the body. They have been associated with heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, as well as causing hormonal dysregulation. Big Food doesn’t care; they do what they can get away with until called out by consumer advocates. (26:00) You end up ingesting micro-doses over time. From canned beverages to packaged foods to what containers you use—it all adds up. It’s important to read the ingredients on food labels; Anna shares an example of a protein bar. (30:30) The messaging claims for meat alternatives didn’t pass Vinnie’s “smell test." (32:30) "Plant-based" has leveled out, as has the “keto explosion” of packaged foods. Vinnie's "Beyond Impossible" documentary explains it all. (See additional show notes for links to the documentary). Anna reads an article about a new version of Beyond Meat that is coming out. The fake meat manufacturer is trying to lure back consumers. (41:00) Lead by Example Anna hears how hard NSNG® is when others in the family are not on board. (46:30) Belief work is a thing. Only make suggestions if someone asks about your progress. Don’t preach “Vinnie says” or load others up with unsolicited “you should”s. Vinnie agrees: People have to do it on their own.  Please avoid preaching and never shame others. Body positivity ought to be rebranded. Loving yourself and still seeking health are not mutually exclusive. Shoutout to a few of the great success stories of NSNG®. (54:00) Anna reminds listeners about belief work and evolving: Your physical you is changing but so is your mental awareness. (58:00) They discuss Anna’s upcoming Eat Happy Italian book. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES ON YOUTUBE - NSNG® 101: Mobility Exercises and More It’s been quite a while since Vinnie has been in the center aisles of the grocery store and tells the story of what he witnessed. (3:00) Anna is well aware of all the aisles and also knows what it costs to get products on the shelves. Big Food keeps you coming back for more and keeps your addiction to fake foods going strong. Anna recently visited her Dad and stepmom in Alabama. (10:00) People don’t even realize they are addicted until they aren’t (addicted). There is always difficulty in proselytizing to family and friends. Some people know better but still choose fake foods anyway. She tells of a recent sauce demo in Santa Barbara. (18:00) She met a very kind older couple who were at the store to buy all the Snapple—no, really—ALL of the Snapple. Vinnie emphasizes to stay away from non-food “foods” (19:30) Your best bet for better health is sticking to one ingredient, real, whole foods. The "ingredient list" on a steak is just steak. Fitness Crazes and Mobility Exercises The duo goes through a list of fitness crazes from over the years and reviews which ones seem effective or not. (21:00) They chat about stretch classes, yoga, barre, pilates, water aerobics, and more. Vinnie shares a cautionary tale about one type of “gym” he went to. Water aerobics is great for geriatric folks or people with joint or spine issues. Vinnie loves a good sauna. (36:00) Sweating is good for you—it gets the toxins out. Mobility exercises are great for ROM (range of motion). (39:00) Vinnie explains the differences between dynamic and static stretching. (41:00) Do not bounce on a stretched muscle! Anna asks him what some of the worst exercise crazes or gadgets he’s seen in his 40 years as a trainer. (47:00) He shares stories of ineffective ab machines, rubber suits, jiggle machines, and much more. Some companies that make those gadgets don’t care if they work, they just want to make a sale. They know they will sell because everyone wants “the promise.” They both share stories of infomercials they worked on. (59:00) Anna is going to be doing a cooking video in the VIP community tonight! They discuss Anna’s upcoming Eat Happy Italian book. (47:00) You can preorder it from . [the_ad id="20253"] PURCHASE BEYOND IMPOSSIBLE (2022) The documentary launched on January 11! Order it TODAY! (10:00) It's not about "luck," it's about planning and putting in the work and having patience. He relates buying a car to investing in yourself. Gina understands betting on yourself in terms of delayed gratification. (16:30) There’s a social media trend about “treating yourself”--but it all centers around not really delaying gratification. Grab your pen and paper and take notes if you can! You may need to listen to this one a couple of times! A little chat about the movie “Vision Quest” leads into the topic for today: cardio training. (2:00) The show got a compliment the other day. (5:00) Vinnie is providing as many tools as he can, especially in the VIP group. Anna will be doing a cooking demo in the group soon. Aerobics or Cardio training is your friend. (7:45) Vinnie explains his approach to cardio goals. (10:00) Anna asks Vinnie about his longer hikes and what he takes with him. There are different ways to make exercise fun for yourself. (16:30) Vinnie often talks about an hour of cardio a day—it wasn’t that long ago that that was the norm. Now people spend more time on their phone or at a computer than they do doing cardio. (18:15) They discuss the idea of boredom during exercise. (19:00) There are a wide variety of ways to get cardio in. They also chat about getting sun in. Weight-bearing exercise: if you are an avid cyclist or swimmer, you still have to get on your feet and do weight-bearing exercise. (29:00) Weight-bearing exercise is how you build your bones up. Breaking up an hour of cardio into 2 or 3 parts is still great! (33:00) All About Zones Zone 2: What is it and why does it matter? (35:00) He gives examples of all four Zones. Everything is working in your favor in Zone 2. (36:30) HIIT is in Zone 4 and no longer burning fat. Anna asks about needing sugar in the blood for homeostasis. (40:30) Yes, in Zone 4 you may—but it only takes 1 teaspoon, not “carb loading.” You are not maximizing your potential by doing HIIT every day. (41:00) Your body needs 3-4 days to recover after long HIIT workouts. Don’t go doing Zone 4 every day to give yourself an excuse to have a donut. You’re still damaging your body with the sugar. HIIT is only good for increasing your VO2 Max. Vinnie explains building up your VO2 Max. (45:00) For all the cardio he does, Vinnie only seldom does intervals. How do you calculate Zone 2 for yourself, and do you need a heart rate monitor? (50:00) You don’t need a super fancy or expensive heart rate monitor to get your basic info. You can just take your pulse, but that can be tricky. Vinnie shares how to calculate your Zone 2 heart rate. (57:15) Take 180 minus your age. (Do not use 220 as your starting point; that is for calculating *maximum* heart rate). If you are a sedentary person, then minus 5 points. If you are already in good shape, you can add 5 points. The goal is 70-79 % of your maximum heart rate. Anna reminds us of many different grocery store chains where you can find her amazing sauces! They discuss Anna’s upcoming Eat Happy Italian book. Caveat mTOR with Dr. Anthony Chaffee - Episode 2444

Episode 2444 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich welcomes Dr. Anthony Chaffee and they discuss cholesterol, ketones, claims of caveat mTOR, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2024/02/caveat-mtor-dr-anthony-chaffee-episode-2444 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS   YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Ketones as Fuel NOTE: This episode is a load of information—grab a pen and paper, you may want to take notes! They open up chatting about the fitness of prominent low-carb doctors vs. vegan doctors. (2:00) Being lean and fit by eating right and staying active while growing older is important. (7:00) Your body only takes 4 grams of sugar at any one time; anything above that your body will treat as a toxin. (10:30) You need to eat the right things or your body will deteriorate. Every facet of your life will be improved by living healthfully. (13:00) Vinnie shares a recent X exchange about bananas. (15:00) The idea of “healthy carbs” is misguided. Anthony explains the biological functions happening with types of cholesterol. He shares an experiment with Oreos by Nick Norwitz. The misinformation is that your brain and body “prefer” sugars because they burn them first. Just because carbs get burned first does not mean they are the better fuel. Ketones are the optimal fuel for your body and brain. A frequent question Vinnie gets in his consultations is about statins. (23:30) Statins haven’t even been proven to reduce the chance of heart disease or stroke. Anthony explains the history and rate of increase of heart disease; for example, the Inuit people. (34:00) Four grams of sugar in the blood looks like a level teaspoon. (43:30)  The ketogenic diet and being fueled by ketones can reverse disease; his example is Pompe disease. They discuss how the body can produce its own sugar if necessary; however, ketones are a more efficient source. (48:30) Athletes on a ketogenic diet can fuel their bodies faster than athletes who depend on sugar and carbs. They chat about carb-loading and how it burdens your body. Vinnie challenges the idea of having to have a fuel belt doing marathons or loading kids up with muffins during soccer games. (1:02:00) Caveat mTOR They discuss mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin). (1:05:00) There is still a lot to be learned about mTOR. If you are eating something you are supposed to eat, then your biochemistry should work properly. The idea that we are getting damaged by eating food that humans have been eating for millennia (meat) is ridiculous. mTOR is a natural protein kinase that fluctuates in the body. You will never micromanage your biochemistry better than your biochemistry can. Anthony reads an amazing excerpt about how the introduction of agriculture has affected human health. (1:10:00) Alzheimer’s dementia was observed in the early 1900s; however, no earlier medical literature has described that pathology. NSNG® 101: The Food List - Episode 2442

Episode 2442 - On this Monday's show Vinnie Tortorich and Anna Vocino review NSNG® 101 with the food list, give you some motivational reminders, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2024/01/nsng-101-list-episode-2442 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES ON YOUTUBE - MOTIVATIONAL REMINDERS They give a mini tribute to singer Melanie. (3:00) Eric Couch (@BamaBass on X) lost over 100 lbs., but his weight loss slowed down and Vinnie’s gonna talk with him. (7:30) Anna reminds us that today is what is most important—stop dwelling on any mistakes you made earlier. (9:50) Do whatever it takes to keep you motivated. (10:00) Vinnie talks about the Rocky Balboa movie he watched recently; even Vinnie needs to be motivated sometimes. Anna talks about getting her sauces into a new store with the help of Kurt Lepird. (16:00) Starting NSNG-- start with the pantry and clear it out. (19:45) The best way is to dive in—it will be most effective. They give other suggestions regarding temptation and when you live with others who aren’t NSNG. Anna shares what some of the challenges were when starting NSNG. (23:30) Out of sight, out of mind helps. THE FOOD LIST Anna reads a fantastic list of what she has in her pantry to get you started. (28:00) There are things like nuts that, although considered NSNG, can be overdone. Pay attention to your hunger cues and any rogue snacking. Vinnie always says you can not eat any food with impunity; his friend Don is an example. Anna continues the list of refrigerated items, like dairy. (39:00) If you’re not a baby, you don’t need dairy; however, dairy (like cheese) is considered NSNG. She gives a disclaimer about meat--buy what you can afford. (42:15) Anna’s new NSNG Italian cookbook is coming out later this year, but you can preorder it! Go through Vinnie’s Amazon link from his book club to find it at The Super Bowl is coming up. Anna’s got tons of recipes for game day! Vinnie explains the sugar in bacon. (53:30) Anna’s list is not necessarily comprehensive here, so you can reach out to her on X to ask questions. (56:30) She continues with the veggie list and gives clarity on items like sweet potatoes and squash. They chat about fruit and using citrus to add acid for flavor—that is different from drinking a glass of juice. Don’t forget—olives and avocados are fruits! There are freezer items: make room for meats and for saving bones for broth! (1:02:15) Do not use bones that someone has eaten off of as those will hold bacteria from saliva. Once you start making your broth, you’ll never go back to boxed broth. Anna’s recipes are so good—it makes her happy when people tell her that they didn’t use to like cooking, but now they do! (1:05:00) Stay away from grain-free items such as cassava and tapioca flours and starches and they will mess with your goals.
