Break 1: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE STORY 1: TWO TEENS ARRESTED AFTER ILLEGAL STREET RACE IN GWINNETT Two teens were arrested for fleeing from an illegal street racing event in Gwinnett, striking patrol cars in the process. John Anthony Pritchett, 19, faces multiple charges including aggravated assault, kidnapping, and possession of firearms during felonies. Dryan Dradarius Vereen, 18, faces obstruction charges. The incident occurred on March 23, with officers responding to gunshots and people fleeing the scene. Pritchett's stolen Dodge Charger collided with a patrol car, leading to a chase and eventual crash. Firearms were found in the vehicle, reported stolen from DeKalb County. Two female passengers claimed they were unable to exit the vehicle. Fortunately, no officers were injured. STORY 2: CORPS OF ENGINEERS RAISING FEES AT ITS LAKE LANIER PARKS, BOAT LAUNCHES The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mobile District announced a fee increase for using corps-run parks and boat ramps at Lake Lanier. Day use and boat launching fees will rise from $5 to $8 this summer. This adjustment aims to sustain recreational facilities' quality and is part of a broader initiative across all USACE-managed properties. The increase applies specifically to corps-run facilities and excludes those managed by other entities like the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. While the fee hike was approved last year, its implementation was postponed to aid local communities recovering from the pandemic's economic impact. The Corps assures visitors of continued commitment to quality recreation and facility maintenance, inviting inquiries about the fee adjustment. STORY 3: SINGLETON ROAD RESIDENTS GETTING THEIR OWN POCKET PARK, GREENWAY TRAIL Gwinnett County officials are addressing a lack of nearby recreational options for residents near Indian Trail-Lilburn Road by breaking ground on Singleton Park and a greenway trail. The park, funded by various sources including sales tax funds and grants, aims to provide accessible green space and play amenities. Expected to open in late 2025, it will feature a playground, restroom, and picnic areas. The three-quarter-mile greenway trail will connect Singleton and Dickens Roads, eventually linking to Bryson Park as part of the county's broader greenway trails plan. While promoting walkability, officials also highlight accessibility via public transit. Residents anticipate the park's convenience and benefits, particularly for families in the area lacking outdoor play options. We’ll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: BILL BANNING PUBERTY BLOCKERS FOR MINORS LANGUISHES ALONGSIDE OTHER CULTURE WAR MEASURES During the 2024 Legislative session, two bills concerning transgender issues failed to pass the Georgia House. The bills aimed to restrict transgender children's access to sports teams, restrooms, and puberty-blocking drugs. Despite passing the Senate, the House did not vote on these measures. The bills reflected broader cultural divides, with Republicans supporting them and Democrats opposing. House Speaker Jon Burns emphasized the importance of timing and prioritization in addressing social issues. Proponents of the bills, like Sen. Ben Watson, argued that banning puberty blockers would prevent irreversible decisions for minors. However, opponents, including transgender advocates, highlighted the positive impact of such treatments on mental health and identity affirmation. Another bill addressing student athletes' mental health was also stalled, leaving room for potential reconsideration in future sessions. STORY 5: IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN, ELECTION LAW CHANGES GO TO THE GOVERNOR AS OTHER HOT-BUTTON PROPOSALS FIZZLE The 2024 Legislative session concluded with a flurry of activity, including the failure of several contentious bills. Despite passing the Senate, bills banning puberty blockers for minors and legalizing sports betting did not receive House approval. The last-minute session also saw the passage of bills related to road renaming and property tax relief. However, controversial measures such as an election overhaul and immigration enforcement bills were approved. Additionally, a proposal for a statue honoring Justice Clarence Thomas and efforts to protect the Okefenokee Swamp from mining faced setbacks. While the session ended without certain bills progressing, discussions on key issues, such as Medicaid expansion and environmental protection, are expected to continue. We’ll be back in a moment Break 3: INGLES 10 – HENRY CO SHERIFFS OFFICE STORY 6: TARGETING IMMUNE CELLS OFFERS HOPE FOR PREVENTING BREAST CANCER Researchers at Cambridge University have identified a new pathway for preventing breast cancer by targeting immune cell exhaustion in healthy women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations. These mutations increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The study found that immune cells in breast tissue of these women show signs of malfunction, unable to clear out damaged cells that could develop into cancer. This discovery could lead to using existing immunotherapy drugs as early intervention to prevent breast cancer, offering an alternative to risk-reducing surgery. The research, published in Nature Genetics, suggests a potential preventative treatment accessible to all women. STORY 7: SCIENTISTS BUST MYTH THAT EGGS ARE BAD FOR YOUR HEART A new study debunks the myth that eggs are bad for heart health, suggesting concerns about cholesterol levels are unnecessary. The PROSPERITY trial involved 140 patients with or at risk for cardiovascular disease who consumed 12 or more fortified eggs weekly. Results showed no adverse effects on blood cholesterol, with reductions in LDL cholesterol and other heart health markers observed in the fortified egg group. Researchers emphasize that eggs' bad reputation may stem from confusion about egg yolk cholesterol and suggest examining overall dietary habits. They encourage heart disease patients to discuss heart-healthy diets with their doctors. We’ll have final thoughts after this. BREAK 2: TOM WAGES – GCPS STORY 4: SUIT ALLEGING SUPPRESSION OF FREE SPEECH MET WITH SKEPTICISM AT U.S. SUPREME COURT Protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court as it reviewed allegations of government collusion with social media firms to restrict free speech. During the proceedings, justices displayed skepticism towards the lawsuit's foundations. The Biden administration argued against any First Amendment breaches, emphasizing the absence of evidence supporting claims of unconstitutional actions. The lawsuit, brought forward by parties from Missouri and Louisiana alongside individual complainants, suggests that their online expressions were curtailed due to governmental influence. The administration posited that any content moderation was the result of social media platforms enforcing their own policies independently. The justices explored the direct impact of alleged government involvement on the plaintiffs and considered the potential implications for public safety. A decision is anticipated, with the plaintiff’s expressing optimism regarding the outcome. STORY 5: ATHENS BOOKSHOP FILES FEDERAL LAWSUIT AGAINST GWINNETT SHERIFF Avid Bookshop, an independent bookstore located in Athens, has initiated a federal lawsuit against Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor and Jail Commander Ben Haynes. The legal action arises from the rejection of books ordered for an inmate, which Avid attributes to a policy that only allows purchases from "authorized retailers," effectively excluding small, local bookstores. This policy, according to Avid, infringes upon inmates' First Amendment rights and amounts to government censorship. The situation unfolded after Avid Bookshop's attempts to deliver books to an inmate were denied, even though the shipments adhered to the required packaging standards. The Sheriff's Office has defended its policy by highlighting concerns over potential contraband and currently restricts book shipments to those sourced from Barnes and Noble and Amazon. Avid's legal representatives have criticized the policy as both vague and unconstitutional, arguing it unduly restricts inmates' access to a wider range of reading materials. While the Sheriff's Office maintains that the policy is a measure to ensure safety within the facility, it has chosen not to comment further due to the ongoing litigation. We’ll be back in a moment. Despite this setback, Rivian intends to produce its new R2 midsize SUV model at an existing facility located in Illinois. The state and local authorities had previously offered Rivian incentives worth $1.5 billion, including tax credits and infrastructure improvements, to secure the deal. So far, Rivian has made two payments amounting to $3 million to the local development authority. The researchers found a link between frequent social media use and an increased desire for cosmetic procedures. Break 1: WAGES STORY 1: SECOND SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY IMPERSONATING A FEDERAL AGENT DURING HOME INVASION Yenson Adrian Cedeno Acevedo, a second suspect in a Lawrenceville home invasion case, has been apprehended by the Gwinnett County Police. The incident, which took place in December, involved three individuals who posed as federal agents to gain entry into an apartment. The culprits then restrained a father and son duo using zip ties and proceeded to rob them of their possessions. At the time of his arrest, Acevedo was already detained on separate charges. Another suspect, Luis Soto, had been taken into custody earlier, with police discovering tactical equipment and stolen items connected to the crime in his possession. The police investigation is still underway, and they urge anyone with further information to reach out to local authorities or provide anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers. STORY 2: DULUTH POLICE FINISH EXPANSION OF REAL TIME CRIME CENTER The Duluth Police Department has announced the completion of its Real Time Crime Center's expansion. The center, founded in 2017, employs a combination of advanced technology and a dedicated team of analysts to manage immediate crises and aid in crime resolution. The latest expansion has resulted in increased space and upgraded technology, boosting the total number of surveillance cameras to approximately 400. This expansion signifies a major step forward in Duluth's dedication to public safety, enabling the center to function as a comprehensive hub for crime response. Analysts are now able to offer precise support to officers during ongoing criminal activities and city events, while also ensuring smooth collaboration with neighboring law enforcement agencies. STORY 3: 7 TIPS FOR HELPING YOU AFFORD COLLEGE The average in-state tuition at public colleges has climbed to over $10,000, while private colleges are averaging a steep $42,162. However, Estephany Flores, a staunch advocate for financial aid, urges students not to be discouraged by these numbers. She highlights the importance of viewing a college education as a future investment. Flores points out that dual enrollment programs, which allow high school students to accrue college credits, are often overlooked resources that can substantially cut down tuition costs. Dr. Reanna Berry, an Associate Professor, offers several strategies to help offset tuition expenses. These include early savings plans, pursuing two-year degrees, enrolling as transient students, taking AP/IB classes, applying for grants, and exploring work-study opportunities. Dr. Berry cautions students against depending on loans as their primary financial solution and alerts them to potential scams aimed at those seeking college funding. Despite the financial hurdles, Gwinnett College continues to maintain its affordability, providing a wide range of options for financial assistance. Flores encourages students to contact the college's financial aid office for tailored advice and support in navigating the financial aspects of college education. Break 2: INGLES 1 STORY 4: LAKO: FOUND MONEY: SHOULD YOU USE AN OLD 401(K) TO PAY OFF A CHILD'S STUDENT LOANS? Many parents harbor the desire to financially support their adult children, which is a factor that should be considered during financial planning. Some may discover dormant 401(k) accounts and consider utilizing these funds to settle their child's student loans. However, drawing from retirement accounts for this purpose can trigger penalties and taxes, thereby diminishing the sum available for debt repayment. The decision between investing for the future or paying off debt needs careful consideration, considering aspects such as interest rates and potential returns on investments. Financial experts typically discourage depleting retirement savings, instead proposing alternative strategies such as reallocating current savings or assisting with loan payments directly from regular income. STORY 5: LAWYER ACCUSING FULTON DA OF CONFLICT DETAILS ACCUSATIONS OF MISCONDUCT AT GEORGIA SENATE HEARING Ashleigh Merchant, the legal counsel for Michael Roman, appeared before a state Senate committee to testify about her discovery of an alleged romantic relationship between Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade. Merchant initiated a motion to have Willis disqualified from the Trump election interference case because of this alleged affair. Details of the affair were revealed by Terrence Bradley, Wade's previous law partner, who voiced concerns about Wade's behavior. In response to these allegations, the Senate committee issued a subpoena to Merchant to delve deeper into the accusations, concentrating on potential conflicts of interest and monetary rewards in the case. Despite the ongoing controversy, Willis reiterated her commitment to continue with the felony racketeering case against Trump and his associates. STORY 6: VIDALIA ONIONS HEADED TO GROCERY SHELVES APRIL 17 Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper, in collaboration with the Vidalia Onion Committee, has declared April 17th as the official pack date for the 2024 Vidalia onion season. Famed for their distinctive sweet taste, Vidalia onions will be accessible in supermarkets across the country from April until early September. The determination of the pack date is influenced by factors such as soil and weather conditions, which serve to ensure the superior quality of the onions. With approximately 11,000 acres set aside for cultivation during the 2024 season, producers are optimistic about another prosperous year. Vidalia onions, unique to 20 counties in southern Georgia due to specific environmental conditions, are protected under federal and state legislation. The legislation aims to hold dealers accountable without needing to prove they knew the substance was tainted. However, concerns have been raised about unintended consequences, such as felony charges for unknowing individuals. Additionally, the Georgia House is set to consider Senate Bill 371, the "Daniel D. Podsiadly, Jr. Act," which would provide injured police officers with lost wages not covered by worker's compensation insurance. The bill aims to alleviate financial burdens for officers recovering from serious injuries sustained on duty. Quintanar was found guilty on multiple charges, including felony murder and aggravated assault. The case revolved around a drug-related robbery that took place at Gilead's residence. Quintanar, along with two other individuals, attempted to steal $600 that had been exchanged during a drug transaction. During the incident, Quintanar pointed a firearm at Ciavy Wiles, a friend of Gilead's. Gilead was fatally shot by Quintanar when he tried to intervene. Following the shooting, the other two suspects fled the scene. One of them, Sebastian Resendiz-Garcia, later entered a guilty plea for voluntary manslaughter. This groundbreaking initiative will also include a course on servicing vehicle charging stations. Over the years, the automotive technology department at the college has been steadily incorporating EV-related subjects into its standard curriculum. The college will soon roll out a certification program dedicated to hybrid-electric and battery-electric vehicles. The partnership between Gwinnett Tech, Siemens, and other departments facilitates students' acquisition of skills in the installation and upkeep of charging stations. STORY 3: SEN. We’ll be right back Break 2: INGLES 9 STORY 4: GEORGIA POWER’S REQUEST FOR MORE ELECTRICITY COMES UNDER FIRE Georgia Power has submitted a request to energy regulators for permission to generate and purchase additional electricity. This move is intended to cater to the escalating demand triggered by the influx of new businesses in Georgia, notably high-tech data centers. The utility's strategy involves the rapid incorporation of new electricity sources, including gas and oil turbines, solar power, and battery storage. However, this proposal has been met with skepticism from various experts and stakeholders who have questioned both the accuracy of the utility's forecast and its continued reliance on fossil fuels. They advocate for alternative approaches such as enhancing transmission line capacity and implementing distributed solar and battery systems. Controversy has also arisen around the tax breaks currently offered to data centers. A proposed bill seeks to suspend these exemptions temporarily and establish a commission to scrutinize the locations of data centers and their energy supplies. If enacted, this suspension could inject a degree of uncertainty into the operations of data centers and potentially impact the accuracy of Georgia Power's electricity forecast. STORY 5: GEORGIA GWINNETT COLLEGE HOSTING PREVIEW DAY ON MARCH 23 Georgia Gwinnett College is set to host its Preview Day on March 23, providing potential students with an in-depth look at its programs, admission process, financial aid options, and student housing facilities. STORY 7: STATE SENATE PASSES BILL AIMED AT AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION The Georgia Senate has passed Senate Bill 390, a legislation that prohibits libraries from allocating funds towards materials provided by the American Library Association. The bill gained approval with a vote tally of 33-20, reflecting a clear divide along party lines. Critics, predominantly Democrats, argue that the bill detracts from efforts to enhance literacy rates in the state. However, amendments have been made to the bill to enable Valdosta State University's library sciences program to maintain its ALA certification. The bill is now slated for review by the state House. We’ll have final thoughts after this. Break 4: HENRY CO SHERIFFS OFFICE Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. This process involves coordinated brain waves propelling fluid through brain tissue to remove debris. The findings, based on studying sleeping mice, suggest new strategies for tackling diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, which involve the buildup of waste in the brain. Enhancing this brain cleansing process could potentially allow people to sleep less while maintaining health, benefiting those with insomnia. Understanding this process better could lead to therapies to prevent or delay neurodegenerative diseases by improving waste removal from the brain. The brain's cleaning method may vary depending on the type and amount of waste present. STORY 5: GEORGIA DEMOCRATS PUSH FOR STATE LAWS PROTECTING REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS FOLLOWING ALABAMA COURT RULING Georgia Democrats are urging Republicans to safeguard access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and contraception in response to a recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling deeming fertilized eggs as children under state law. Sen. Elena Parent, the lead sponsor of the bill, emphasizes the need for certainty amid concerns that couples in Georgia may reconsider IVF due to legal uncertainty. Democrats call for legislative action to protect IVF and contraception, expressing concerns over potential legal implications similar to those seen in Alabama. However, Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch dismisses the need for such legislation, citing the ruling's applicability only to Alabama. Despite Democratic efforts, Gooch opposes addressing the issue hastily in the Senate, raising questions about the timing and necessity of the proposed bill. Additionally, Democrats highlight the lack of congressional action to safeguard contraception access following a Supreme Court justice's opinion suggesting reconsideration of precedents like Roe v. Wade. We’ll be back in a moment Break 3: INGLES 8 STORY 6: GEORGIA POWER COULD FACE NEW LAW TO DISCLOSE ITS COST OF POWER GENERATION ON CUSTOMER BILLS Georgia Power customers are facing higher electricity rates and increased costs for nuclear expansion, prompting a push for transparency in billing. House Bill 1406, championed by Chairman Don Parsons, requires Georgia Power to disclose information about fuel costs on customer bills, aiming to enhance understanding of energy charges. This comes amid concerns over Georgia Power's business practices and recent rate hikes. While the company opposes the bill, arguing that much of the information is available online, proponents emphasize the need for clarity, particularly regarding fluctuating fuel costs. Critics accuse Georgia Power of prioritizing secrecy over customer interests, highlighting the importance of transparency in government-run monopolies. The bill's fate now rests with the House Rules Committee ahead of the legislative deadline. Governor Brian Kemp and other Republicans have blamed federal immigration policy, while Democrats accuse the GOP of politicizing the tragedy. Proposed legislation includes bills to refund property taxes for areas with lax law enforcement, penalize jailers for not reporting inmates' immigration status, and transfer soon-to-be-released undocumented inmates to sanctuary states. These bills have until Thursday to pass one chamber for a chance at becoming law this year. STORY 3: RESEARCH REVEALS POTENTIAL BREAKTHROUGH IN BREAST CANCER TREATMENT New research suggests that breast cancer could be treated with a drug that mimics testosterone's effects, offering a potentially less toxic approach compared to traditional estrogen-blocking treatments. The drug enobosarm stimulates the androgen receptor, which has been found to suppress estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, the most common type. In a study involving 136 postmenopausal women with advanced ER+ breast cancer, enobosarm showed promising antitumor effects without causing adverse side effects or masculinizing symptoms. This novel hormonal strategy offers hope for a less debilitating form of treatment, with potential for further investigation in combination with other therapies. Break 2: INGLES 7 STORY 4: GWINNETT EDUCATORS GROUP ENDORSES SHANA WHITE IN SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT 3 RACE The Gwinnett County Association of Educators (GCAE) announced its endorsement of veteran teacher Shana White in the District 3 race for the Gwinnett County Board of Education. The decision was based on White's dedication to public service, her recent teaching experience within GCPS classrooms, and her platform informed by those experiences. White, a third-generation educator, has taught at various schools within GCPS and currently works at the Kapor Foundation. The endorsement follows GCAE's previous endorsements for Leroy Ranel and Tarece Johnson-Morgan in other school board districts. While White secured GCAE's endorsement, other candidates in the District 3 race, such as Yanin Cortes and Steven Gasper, have received endorsements from Mary Kay Murphy and U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick, respectively. STORY 5: GEORGIA LAWMAKERS HOLD OUT HOPE FOR BILL THAT WOULD RESTRICT PUBLICATION OF MUGSHOTS The practice of sheriff's offices posting mugshots of booked individuals has faced criticism due to its potential consequences, including job loss and reputational damage, especially for those not convicted of a crime. Representative Roger Bruce proposed House Bill 882 to restrict mugshot posting until conviction, with fines for non-compliance. However, a similar bill by Representative Jordan Riley has different provisions, such as delaying release until the sheriff deems it safe, raising concerns about restricting access for journalists and potential workload issues for sheriff's offices. While there is bipartisan support for such measures, they face challenges in committee and raise debates over free speech and the protection of innocent individuals. HERE'S AN UPDATE Hospitals in Gwinnett County are expanding their services with new facilities, including Northside Hospital's 100,000-square-foot medical office building in Buford, set to open this summer. Additionally, construction on a 15-story tower at Northside Gwinnett in Lawrenceville is underway, expected to add over 300 patient beds and make it the largest campus in the hospital system by 2025. Another Northside medical office building is planned on Sugarloaf Parkway. Northeast Georgia Health System is also expanding its Braselton hospital campus with a $565 million project, adding 150 licensed acute care beds and doubling the number of treatment rooms in the Emergency Department. The expansion is scheduled to open in phases, with the first phase expected in summer 2025 and the second phase in 2026. STORY 2: NORTHEAST GWINNETT RESIDENTS FACE BIG DECISION ON AREA'S FUTURE IN CITYHOOD VOTE. AN UPDATE The proposed cityhood of Mulberry in Gwinnett County is headed to a referendum vote after Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 333 into law. If approved, Mulberry would become Gwinnett County's 17th city, encompassing approximately 41,000 residents and becoming the county's largest city by geographic size and the second-largest by population. Proponents, including House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, highlight the opportunity for local control over planning and zoning decisions without imposing a city property tax. However, opponents express concerns about potential financial implications for Gwinnett County, with projections indicating an annual loss of $9.1 million in revenue. The referendum will appear on ballots in May, marking a significant decision for Gwinnett County residents. STORY 3: PROGRESS: OTHER BIG PROJECTS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2024 Several significant projects are underway in Gwinnett County, shaping its future in 2024: - The Westin Atlanta Gwinnett hotel at the Gas South District, with 360 rooms, will open soon, offering amenities such as a Starbucks, restaurant, and rooftop bar. This contribution aligns with the Fostering Success Act, which offers tax credits to fund wraparound services for youths leaving foster care. These services include education support, food, medical care, rental assistance, and transportation funds. The Act aims to address challenges faced by foster youth, such as homelessness and reliance on welfare programs. CareSource's donation follows a trend of corporate support for critical social programs, reflecting a commitment to improving community well-being. STORY 6: GEORGIA POWER HIKES PROMPT LEGISLATION TO RESTORE CONSUMER ADVOCATE FOR PSC ELECTRICITY RATE CASES Georgia Power customers will face higher electricity rates due to nuclear expansion and fuel costs, prompting legislative action to shift utility regulator responsibilities. Senate Bill 457 aims to create a consumer's utility counsel to advocate for the public in rate cases, responding to recent rate increases approved by the Public Service Commission (PSC). The bill seeks to ensure robust information is considered, although the PSC argues that existing advocacy staff already represents consumer interests effectively. Additionally, House Bill 1220 proposes giving the PSC oversight of private water companies with more than 1,000 customers, following complaints of exorbitant bills. These legislative efforts aim to address concerns of ratepayers and improve utility regulation in Georgia. STORY 6: LONG COVID LINKED TO INFLAMMATORY PROTEIN, STUDY FINDS Cambridge University researchers have found a potential link between Long COVID and high levels of the inflammatory protein interferon gamma. The groundbreaking study suggests that IFN-γ could serve as a biomarker for Long COVID fatigue, paving the way for improved diagnosis and treatment. The comprehensive study followed Long COVID patients for over two years. It discovered a persistent production of IFN-γ correlating with ongoing symptoms. This research is significant given the skepticism surrounding Long COVID, despite an estimated 1.9 million people in the UK suffering from it. The research identifies specific immune cells that produce IFN-γ and observes a decrease in symptoms as IFN-γ levels drop. While vaccinations may help clear the virus, effective therapies remain a necessity. The study also suggests that IFN-γ could help classify Long COVID subtypes, leading to more personalized treatments. Gaining a deeper understanding of Long COVID could equip us with vital knowledge for future pandemics. STORY 7: NEW STUDY: 4 IN 10 AMERICANS KNOW SOMEONE WHO DIED OF DRUG OVERDOSE A staggering four out of ten Americans know someone who has died from a drug overdose. This alarming statistic comes from a recent study by non-profit organization RAND. Furthermore, one in three respondents stated that their lives were disrupted by the death. "The experiences and needs of millions of survivors of an overdose loss largely have been overlooked," said Dr. Alison Athey, a behavioral scientist at RAND. The study also revealed that exposure to overdose deaths was more common among women, married individuals, U.S.-born participants, and urban dwellers. Disturbingly, 13% of respondents reported significant life disruption due to an overdose death. In 2022, over 109,000 people died from a drug overdose, bringing the total since 2000 to more than 1.1 million. We’ll have final thoughts after this. Break 2: INGLES 4 STORY 4: Women get same exercise benefits as men but with less effort: study A recent study has found that women can reap the same benefits from exercise as men, but with less effort required. This research identified a "gender gap" in physical exertion, revealing that women can exercise less frequently than men and still achieve greater cardiovascular gains. The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), utilized data from over 400,000 U.S. adults collected between 1997 and 2019 by the National Health Interview Survey. The results showed that regular physical activity reduced mortality risk by 24% in women and 15% in men. Notably, the research indicated that men need to engage in moderate to vigorous activities like brisk walking or cycling for about five hours per week to reach their maximal survival benefit. In contrast, women can attain the same benefit with just two-and-a-half hours of similar activity per week. When it comes to weightlifting and other muscle-strengthening exercises, men peak at three sessions per week, while women only need one. Women also reach maximal survival benefit at 140 minutes of exercise per week, whereas men require twice that amount. STORY 5: Did religious people cope much better during the pandemic? A University of Cambridge study found that religious individuals coped better with the Covid-19 pandemic than non-religious ones. The mental health decline was 60% worse for non-believers. The research, which analyzed data from the UK and US, showed that those with strong religious beliefs experienced less unhappiness during the pandemic. The study suggests that religion can bolster self-esteem and coping skills in times of crisis. However, the benefits of religion were not observed in areas with strict lockdowns, indicating the importance of access to places of worship. The research highlights the role of religious faith in building resilience and providing hope during challenging times. She was last seen departing from McClure Science High School and was spotted running down Club Drive in the direction of Shackleford Road. Cambron's disappearance was reported through the Gwinnett County Public Schools Police Department. You can contact the Gwinnett County Police or provide information anonymously via Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta. STORY 2: GEORGIA HOUSE BILL WOULD ADD DEMOGRAPHIC DIVERSITY TO INVEST GEORGIA FUND SELECTION CRITERIA State Representative Darshun Kendrick, representing Lithonia, is championing House Bill 1138 with the goal of broadening the demographic reach of the Invest Georgia Fund. The fund operates as a "fund of funds", directing state resources into venture capital firms which subsequently invest in local businesses. The proposed legislation by Kendrick introduces a new criterion to the fund's objectives - promoting investment diversity that mirrors Georgia's demographic diversity. The objective behind this initiative is to stimulate economic growth and generate job opportunities for a wider range of Georgians. Presently, the bill is being deliberated by the Georgia House Economic Development and Tourism Committee. STORY 3: GWINNETT LAWMAKER FILES FREEDOM TO DRIVE BILL In a move geared towards inclusivity and public safety, State Senator Nabilah Islam Parkes, representing Duluth, has tabled Senate Bill 478, also known as the Freedom To Drive Act. This legislation aims to extend driver's license access to non-U.S. citizens in Georgia. The bill proposes the provision of government-issued identification and driving authorization cards to immigrants, independent of their immigration status. The objective is to legally enable immigrants to drive, thereby enhancing public safety and fostering a more inclusive environment. This measure also seeks to allow them to contribute more effectively to Georgia's economy and societal fabric. Currently under review by the Senate’s Public Safety Committee, the bill suggests an eight-year valid license for noncitizens and ensures non-discrimination during the application process. A variety of documents, including school IDs, employment IDs, and immigration-related papers like DACA approval letters, are deemed acceptable for this purpose. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break 2: INGLES 6 STORY 4: GEORGIA POWER OBJECTIONS CAST LONG SHADOW OVER STATE LAWMAKERS’ EFFORTS TO EXPAND SOLAR ENERGY In Georgia, there is a growing call for the expansion of community solar initiatives, which proponents argue could lower overall energy costs and broaden access to clean energy. However, these proposals face opposition from Georgia Power, the state's largest electric utility. The legislative measures under consideration would permit developers to construct small solar arrays within Georgia Power's jurisdiction. This would allow customers to subscribe to a share of the electricity produced by these arrays and subsequently receive credits on their utility bills. Advocates insist that this initiative would particularly benefit renters and homeowners with roof areas unsuitable for solar panels due to shading. Georgia Power counters this argument by suggesting that such a program could result in cost shifting to other consumers and potentially lead to confusion among ratepayers. Despite these concerns, supporters stress the urgency of expanding clean energy options in light of escalating energy costs and an anticipated energy deficit. For these bills to progress, they need to pass at least one legislative chamber by the deadline on February 29. STORY 5: PARTNERSHIP GWINNETT RECOGNIZES LOCAL COMPANIES FOR CREATING NEW JOBS In a significant boost to the local economy, eight firms in Gwinnett County collectively generated over 1,500 new jobs and made an investment close to $486 million last year, according to Partnership Gwinnett. The companies, which include Leuze Electronic Inc., NEMA Inc., and Northeast Georgia Health System, were recognized for their contributions at the Gwinnett Company Reception. This provision would be applicable following the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. With a vote of 153-11, the bill received substantial backing. Speaker Jon Burns underscored the crucial role such legislation plays in supporting working families. The sentencing comes after Tran was found guilty of a double murder and threatening another person during a drug transaction in 2020. The charges against him included malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Tran had planned to purchase marijuana from An Ha and Julian Talbo but instead robbed them and ended their lives at a residence in Lawrenceville. He also menaced a woman with a firearm. Following the collection of substantial evidence, Tran confessed, leading to his conviction. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson expressed her contentment in bringing justice to the victims' families. STORY 2: SHOPLIFTING SUSPECT WANTED TO SELL STOLEN TOOLS TO MAKE MONEY FOR FOOD, LODGING Kevin Elam, a 36-year-old Indianapolis native, was caught attempting to steal DeWalt power tools from an Ace Hardware store near Loganville. His intention was to sell the stolen items to fund his food and shelter needs. Despite making a getaway in a Nissan Rouge, diligent store employees were able to provide the police with a detailed vehicle description and tag number. Surveillance camera analysts located the vehicle and relayed the information to the officers, resulting in Elam's arrest just 8.2 miles from the store. The stolen tools, valued at $1,271, were recovered. Elam admitted to the theft, attributing it to financial strain, and is currently being held in Gwinnett County Jail on a felony theft by shoplifting charge, with a bond set at $4,600. STORY 3: BULLIED TEENS MORE AT RISK OF SUFFERING PSYCHOTIC EPISODES Recent research has unveiled that teenagers who are victims of bullying are more prone to experiencing early psychotic episodes. This is attributed to reduced glutamate levels, a neurotransmitter that controls emotions in the brain's anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). The study, published in Molecular Psychiatry, suggests that focusing on glutamate could decrease the likelihood of psychotic disorders in bullied teens. Psychosis, defined by a disconnection from reality and hallucinations, is linked with altered glutamate levels. Researchers from the University of Tokyo used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to evaluate glutamate levels in adolescents, establishing a correlation between bullying experiences and subclinical psychotic symptoms. The lead author, Dr. Naohiro Okada, advocates for anti-bullying initiatives and mental health support as preventative strategies. Non-drug interventions like cognitive behavioral therapy could rectify neurotransmitter imbalances in bullied adolescents. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. She stresses the unrealistic beauty expectations placed on women and advocates for open conversations about hair loss, challenging the prevalent notion that femininity is tied to voluminous hair. Mukherjee also shines a light on how modern lifestyle factors can affect hair health and welcomes the idea of a hair loss brand sponsoring the Miss England pageant, marking a progressive step towards addressing the issue. STORY 5: THESE KIDS ARE FIRST IN WORLD TO GET SPECIAL MARVEL SUPERHERO BIONIC ARMS Kaden Taylor and Safiyyah Uddin, two British children born with partial limbs, have become the world's first recipients of Spider-Man-themed bionic prosthetics. The innovative prosthetics, a result of a collaboration between Marvel and Disney and manufactured by Open Bionics, are 3D-printed and equipped with myoelectric sensors that respond to muscle contractions. Safiyyah is delighted with her pink Hero Arm, which mirrors Spider-Woman, and is now able to perform tasks using both hands. Kaden, who was initially reluctant about prosthetics, has enthusiastically adopted his Spider-Man Hero Arm, significantly boosting his confidence and enabling him to participate in activities such as bike riding. Open Bionics has plans to develop more superhero-themed prosthetics and is currently searching for a candidate with a limb difference to represent "Miles Morales" in their upcoming project. Unlike before, they are no longer available around the clock, seven days a week. STORY 2: FOUR PEOPLE ARRESTED AS GWINNETT POLICE RECOVER $1 MILLION IN STOLEN CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS Gwinnett County Police unearthed stolen construction materials valued at $1 million and a substantial quantity of pills suspected to be illicit narcotics during the execution of a search warrant at a residence located at 4260 Tuggle Road. Four individuals, identified as Bobby Mosley, Charles Mosley, Estuesta Fortuna Rogelio Jr., and Regina Crane, are facing charges related to the possession of controlled substances with the intent to distribute3. The stolen materials, consisting of items such as flooring, doors, and appliances, were discovered in garages on the property. Investigators are currently in collaboration with retail companies like Home Depot and Lowes to identify the stolen items5. As the investigation advances, additional charges may be filed6. The process of inventorying the recovered items is ongoing and is expected to take more than a week to complete. STORY 3: GWINNETT SCHOOLS HONORED WITH CANCER RESEARCH GRANT Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has been honored with the American Cancer Society's Hero of Research Award1. The grant will fund research into the role of BLM in alternative lengthening of telomeres, a process linked to several types of cancer. The research, scheduled to run from January 1 to December 31, 2026, will focus on brain tumors, breast cancer, neuroblastoma, sarcoma, and bone cancer. GCPS Superintendent Calvin J. Watts expressed pride in the partnership with the American Cancer Society and highlighted their shared commitment to community well-being and saving lives. The Gwinnett Relay For Life event, an integral part of these fundraising efforts, is set for April 27 at the Suwanee Town Center. Break 3: STORY 6: STUDY EXPLORES HOW EMPLOYED AMERICANS HANDLE SICKNESS A study of 2,000 employed adults found that 40% of Americans believe their mother cares for them better than their partner when they fall ill. Men are more likely to agree with this sentiment than women. While most people prefer to keep their illness private, some share about it on social media, with men more likely to do so than women. Despite feeling unwell, many still attempt to remain productive, with some even working while sick. Concerns about falling behind at work and financial worries contribute to the reluctance to take sick days, particularly among women who worry more about reduced or lost wages. Many respondents favor telehealth visits over in-person doctor's appointments due to convenience. STORY 7: A FUNGAL PLAGUE IS KILLING GEORGIA’S BATS. SCIENTISTS ARE FIGHTING BACK Wildlife biologists in northeast Georgia are monitoring the devastating impact of white-nose syndrome on tricolored bats, a species once prevalent in the area. The fungal disease causes dehydration and starvation in hibernating bats, leading to a significant population decline across North America. The fungus, which thrives in cold, damp environments, has now reached Georgia, posing a threat to various bat species. Strategies to combat the syndrome include treatment trials using airborne compounds to inhibit fungal growth in bat habitats, with promising results seen in the recovery of bat populations in treated areas. Conservationists stress the importance of human intervention in reducing the impact of human-induced threats to wildlife species like bats. We’ll have final thoughts after this. FROM THE BG AD GROUP STUDIO THIS IS YOUR NEWS MINUTE ON THE GWINNETT DAILY POST PODCAST PRESENTED BY CREDIT UNION OF GEORGIA. TODAY IS MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12TH, AND I'M KEITH IPPOLITO https://twitter.com/KeithIpp86. HOW ROAD CONDITIONS IN GEORGIA HAVE DETERIORATED SINCE 2000 https://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/plus/how-road-conditions-in-georgia-have-deteriorated-since-2000/collection_f61cc326-3a5f-5724-960c-397373d5f3af.html#1 ROAD CONDITIONS IN GEORGIA HAVE SEEN A SIGNIFICANT DECLINE SINCE 2000. DATA FROM THE BUREAU OF TRANSPORTATION STATISTICS REVEALS THAT THE SHARE OF ROADS IN "ACCEPTABLE CONDITION" IN GEORGIA HAS DROPPED FROM 99.86% IN 2000 TO JUST UNDER 93% IN 2020. THIS DECREASE HAS FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS FOR GEORGIA MOTORISTS, WHO SPEND AN AVERAGE OF $410 PER YEAR ON VEHICLE MAINTENANCE COSTS AND INCREASED FUEL CONSUMPTION DUE TO POORLY MAINTAINED ROADS. THE CONDITION OF ROADS IS MEASURED BY THE INTERNATIONAL ROUGHNESS INDEX (IRI), WITH ROADS HAVING IRI VALUES BELOW 170 CONSIDERED IN ACCEPTABLE CONDITION AND THOSE ABOVE 170 CLASSIFIED AS POOR. THESE FIGURES ARE PART OF A LARGER TREND ACROSS THE U.S, WHERE THE STATE OF ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE HAS DETERIORATED, LEADING TO AN ESTIMATED $130 BILLION IN EXTRA VEHICLE REPAIRS AND FUEL COSTS ANNUALLY. Initially treated as suspicious, investigation concluded it was not a crime. Surveillance footage indicated he collided with a guardrail, fell from his wheelchair, and succumbed to his injuries. The cold weather likely exacerbated the situation. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death. STORY 2: MULBERRY CITYHOOD BILL HEADS TO GOV. KEMP'S DESK. WHAT HAPPENS NOW? The state House passed Senate Bill 333, sending it to Gov. Brian Kemp for approval. The bill would allow residents in northeastern Gwinnett County to vote on creating the city of Mulberry in May. Proposed without property taxes, Mulberry would be Gwinnett's 17th municipality, potentially becoming its largest by area and second largest by population. The city would have a five-member council, electing a mayor internally. Funding would come from fees rather than property taxes. While supported by House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, Democrats argued for further review before sending it to voters. STORY 3: EX-VET COMPLETES MARATHONS AROUND THE WORLD DRESSED AS FRUIT Sally Orange, an ex-army major, gained fame by completing marathons on every continent dressed as various fruits. Her unique attire has garnered attention, including meeting members of the Royal family. Sally, 49, raised over £800k for charity through these marathons since 2009. Developed by a French research team led by Professor Bertrand Simon, the lens, dubbed the "spiral diopter," functions similarly to progressive lenses but without typical distortions. Its spiral design creates multiple points of focus, providing clear vision at various depths. This innovation could benefit individuals with cataracts or age-related vision issues. Additionally, the lens's potential applications extend to contact lenses, intraocular implants, and miniaturized imaging systems. The lens's creation involved combining intuitive design with advanced fabrication techniques, and ongoing research aims to further understand its optical properties and real-world performance. Break 3: STORY 6: GEORGIA LAWMAKERS, ENVIRONMENTALISTS BLAST TAX BREAK PLAN TO EXPAND CRYPTO-MINING IN STATE A proposed bill in Georgia, dubbed the "Blockchain Basics Act," aimed at supporting the state's burgeoning Bitcoin-mining industry, has sparked controversy due to concerns over noise pollution, energy, and water usage. Sponsored by Rep. Scott Hilton, the bill would grant tax breaks to crypto mining companies and prevent local officials from imposing noise regulations on mining centers. While proponents argue for rural economic development and job creation, opponents, including lawmakers from both parties and environmentalists, raise concerns about the impact on local communities and the environment. Additionally, the bill's provision to bar treating cryptocurrency as securities raises concerns about investor protection and fraud investigation. The bill is undergoing debate, with stakeholders urging careful consideration of its implications. STORY 7: GEORGIA SENATE APPROVES BILL THAT AIMS TO RESTRICT THE WAYS WORKERS CAN FORM UNIONS The Georgia Senate passed Senate Bill 362, supported by Gov. Brian Kemp, requiring businesses to hold secret ballot elections before recognizing labor unions if they want to receive state incentives. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Mike Hodges, aims to prevent unions from using less formal methods like card checks for unionization. Proponents argue that secret ballots protect workers from intimidation and pressure, while opponents, including Democratic senators, argue that such ballots delay negotiations and allow employers to use intimidation tactics. Republicans maintain that the bill aligns with Arizona's precedent and does not violate national labor law, while Democrats fear it could lead to costly legal battles. Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: ECI GROUP BREAKS GROUND ON THE AVERLY COLLINS HILL APARTMENTS IN LAWRENCEVILLE ECI Group has commenced construction on The Averly Collins Hill, a $76 million apartment development spanning 22 acres on Collins Rd. in Lawrenceville. The project, in collaboration with The Griffin Fund, will feature 300 units of Class A apartments across eight buildings. Synovus provided construction financing for the three-story garden-style residences, which will complement planned 55+ active adult housing and commercial components in the Lawrenceville Gateway development. The project aligns with the nearby 15-story Northside Hospital Gwinnett tower, expected to bring 3,000-5,000 jobs. Amenities at The Averly Collins Hill include a clubhouse, fitness center, pool, dog play area, and coffee bar. The apartments boast upscale features like wood-style flooring, quartz countertops, and stainless steel appliances. The development, located at 700 Collins Hill Rd., aims to offer convenient and quality housing in a mixed-use neighborhood. STORY 5: GEORGIA SENATORS DEBATE STATE PULLOUT FROM ACCREDITING AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Conservative state senators in Georgia are proposing Senate Bill 390 to sever ties with the American Library Association (ALA), citing objections to the ALA's support for library materials on LGBTQ topics. The bill would prohibit state and local entities from spending on the ALA and remove requirements for public library directors to hold degrees accredited by the ALA. Despite concerns about potential impacts on library programs, the bill has garnered support in light of recent controversies. Another bill, SB 394, seeks restrictions on materials in school libraries, while SB 154 could hold librarians accountable for distributing materials deemed harmful to minors. Discussions are ongoing, balancing concerns about funding and accreditation with objections to certain library content. STORY 6: GEORGIA STATE SUPREME COURT CHIEF TELLS LAWMAKERS JUSTICE SYSTEM NEEDS BETTER PAY TO MOVE CASES Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael P. Boggs addressed state legislators, highlighting the staffing shortages and financial challenges facing Georgia's judicial system. Despite progress in reducing case backlogs, staffing shortages of court reporters, prosecutors, public defenders, and other court personnel hinder efficient case processing. Boggs emphasized the need for competitive pay to attract and retain experienced professionals. High turnover rates and unfilled vacancies across all levels of the judicial system were cited, along with shortages of court reporters and interpreters. Innovative use of grant funds helped reduce backlogs, but additional state funding is required to address staffing needs adequately. Public defender and prosecutor officials also discussed budgetary concerns, with proposals to increase salaries to attract more attorneys. Boggs underscored the importance of competitive compensation to prevent further depletion of legal talent and maintain efficient judicial operations. STORY 7: JONO DAVIS EXCITED FOR OPPORTUNITY WITH AURORA THEATRE, LAWRENCEVILLE ARTS CENTER Jono Davis, with extensive experience in theater, has been appointed as the Lawrenceville-based Aurora Theatre's complex general manager, transitioning from his role at Cobb PARKS' Jennie T. He aims to leverage his background to oversee the Lawrenceville Arts Center, collaborate with Aurora Theatre leadership, and enhance community engagement. Excited about the opportunity, Davis looks forward to contributing to Aurora Theatre's mission and potentially returning to the stage himself, while remaining committed to his new responsibilities. STORY 1: FATAL CRASH INVOLVING TROOPER AND MOTORCYCLIST EXCEEDED SPEEDS OF 140 MPH Gerson Danilo Ayala Rodriguez, a 21-year-old from Norcross, led a Georgia State Trooper on a high-speed chase exceeding 140 mph on his motorcycle on January 28, causing the trooper, Jimmy Cenescar, to lose control of his patrol car and crash, resulting in his death. Rodriguez, who lacked a driver's license and a valid license plate, has been arrested and charged with murder, vehicular homicide, and several other offenses. The Georgia Department of Public Safety worked diligently to investigate the incident. Trooper Cenescar, 28, was a recent graduate of Georgia Gwinnett College and had joined the department in January 2023. Visitation and funeral services for Cenescar will be held later this week. STORY 2: LAZINESS AND AIR POLLUTION LARGELY TO BLAME FOR DEMENTIA: STUDY A new study suggests that dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, was extremely rare in ancient times, with modern lifestyles and environments largely to blame for its prevalence today. Analysis of ancient Greek and Roman texts reveals few mentions of cognitive decline comparable to Alzheimer's. As Roman cities grew denser, pollution increased, possibly driving up cases of cognitive decline. Additionally, Roman aristocrats' use of lead in cooking vessels and water pipes may have contributed to neurotoxicity. Modern-day Tsimane Amerindians, living a physically active lifestyle, have extremely low rates of dementia, highlighting the influence of modern environments on the condition. These findings suggest that lifestyle factors, such as sedentary behavior and pollution exposure, play a significant role in the rise of Alzheimer's disease. STORY 3: NEW WEIGHT LOSS MEDICATION COULD LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE IN OBESE ADULTS A new weight loss medication, tirzepatide, has shown promise in lowering blood pressure in obese adults, according to a study published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension. The medication significantly reduced systolic blood pressure, a strong predictor of cardiovascular death, in nearly 500 severely overweight adults. Tirzepatide works by mimicking metabolic hormones that regulate insulin secretion and sensitivity, leading to weight loss by reducing appetite and slowing down digestion. Participants taking tirzepatide experienced average reductions in systolic blood pressure of 7.4 mm Hg to 10.6 mm Hg, alongside significant weight loss. Lead author Professor James A. de Lemos noted the potential of tirzepatide in preventing or treating high blood pressure, but emphasized the need for further research to confirm these findings and understand long-term effects on cardiovascular health. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: POSSIBLE NEW TREATMENT FOR RARE DISORDER THAT CAUSES BABIES TO HAVE EXTRA FINGERS AND TOES Researchers at the University of Leeds may have discovered a treatment for a rare disorder causing extra fingers and toes, along with other birth defects, autism, and a large head circumference. The disorder currently has no treatment, but the research identified a molecule that could potentially treat neurological symptoms and prevent further deterioration. The drug is already in clinical trials for another disorder, expediting the process if found effective. Dr. James Poulter emphasized the importance of such research for patients and families facing years of uncertainty. The disorder stems from a genetic mutation in the MAX gene, identified through a study published in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Further research will explore the treatment's effectiveness and its potential to improve symptoms caused by the mutation. STORY 5: ADVERSITY EARLY IN LIFE CAN CAUSE KID’S BRAINS TO DEVELOP TOO FAST A new study suggests that children exposed to early life adversity (ELA) undergo accelerated brain development during preschool years, potentially leading to negative health outcomes later in life. Researchers from A*STAR's Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences studied 549 children, tracking brain development via MRI scans at ages 4.5, 6, and 7.5 years. They found that ELA is linked to accelerated brain development between ages 4.5 and 6, likely a protective response. However, this can shorten the window for adaptive learning and neuroplasticity, with implications for cognitive and mental health. Dr. Tan Ai Peng emphasized the importance of early intervention during this critical period to mitigate adverse effects. The study was published in the journal Nature Mental Health. Break 3: INGLES 5 STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on sugar in cereals. Natiela Barros was previously charged with first-degree cruelty to children, aggravated assault, felony murder, and malice murder. The incident occurred at their Bethlehem home in Gwinnett County. The arrest warrant states that Natiela Barros beat the child with a wooden rolling pin and did not seek medical help for the victim. Both Cledir Barros and Natiela Barros are in custody and denied bond. The motive for the beating is unclear. STORY 2: DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ARRESTED FOR MAKING SOCIAL MEDIA THREAT A student from Discovery High School has been arrested after making threats against the school on social media. The arrest followed an investigation involving the FBI, state and local law enforcement, and telecommunications companies. Although no gun or weapon was found, and there was no evidence the student intended to carry out the threat, the school is taking the situation seriously. The threat caused panic and disrupted the school day. The student will face criminal charges and the maximum school disciplinary consequence. This incident follows a similar one last August when a rumor during a football game caused a stampede. STORY 3: CHINESE HERBAL REMEDY GINKGO BILOBA HELPS STROKE VICTIMS RECOVER QUICKER A study suggests that a traditional Chinese herbal remedy, ginkgo biloba, may aid stroke recovery. The study, conducted in China, found that stroke survivors treated with intravenous injections of ginkgo diterpene lactone meglumine (GDLM) showed better cognitive recovery at 14 days and 90 days after a clot-caused ischemic stroke. Ginkgo biloba, derived from the ginkgo tree, has been used in China as a complementary treatment for ischemic stroke. The compound showed neuroprotective effects, including expanding brain blood vessels and improving brain cell tolerance to oxygen deprivation. Longer-term research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of GDLM injections. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: GEORGIA SENATE CLEARS BILL TO LEGALIZE SPORTS BETTING WITH CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT The Georgia Senate passed a bill (Senate Bill 386) that lays the groundwork for legalizing sports betting in the state. The bill includes a constitutional amendment that would require a referendum, giving Georgia voters the final say. The legislation, sponsored by Republican Sen. Clint Dixon, allows the Georgia Lottery to oversee the sports gambling industry, with a 20% tax on revenue to fund higher education HOPE scholarships and pre-K programs. The bill passed with a 35-15 vote, meeting the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments. The legislation now heads to the House chamber for further consideration. STORY 5: GEORGIA RENT PRICES INCREASED 6TH MOST IN THE U.S. LAST YEAR The U.S. economy is showing signs of optimism, with strong economic growth, consumer spending, and employment rates despite previous recession concerns. The Federal Reserve hints at possible interest rate cuts in 2024. While inflation has slowed, the housing market continues to pose challenges, with high rental costs driven by a long-term shortage of housing stock. Rent prices have surged, particularly in states like Rhode Island, Maryland, and Delaware, where median rents increased by double-digit percentages. In Georgia, rent increased by 16.1%, with a median rent of $1,753 in 2024. Nationwide, the median rent increased by 12.6% to $1,793. ***GCPS READ*** Hey, Gwinnett! The closure reflects the challenges faced by the brewing industry in the region, with Anderby Brewing in Peachtree Corners closing in the summer of the previous year, Black Bird Brewing in Lilburn shutting down in October, and Ironshield Brewing in Lawrenceville closing its taproom in December while continuing beer sales through local retailers. The closures come amid broader challenges for breweries nationwide. STORY 7: GEORGIA SENATE PASSES MULBERRY CITYHOOD BILL The Georgia Senate has approved legislation proposing a referendum to form the city of Mulberry in northeast Gwinnett, and the bill now proceeds to the state House of Representatives for consideration. The proposed city, championed by House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, would be Gwinnett County's 17th city if approved by voters in the May 21 general election primary ballot. The cityhood proposal, prompted by concerns over development in northern Gwinnett, aims to address zoning issues in the area. Mulberry, which would be the largest Gwinnett city in terms of land size, would not implement a city property tax. We’ll have final thoughts after this.
