A World Without Privacy

https://youtu.be/0RhCrb8OCjw https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Impact-of-surveillance:b The current state of privacy is bad. Surveillance today is pervasive, and the effects of this surveillance on the fabric of society is profound. We need to make sure we’re fully aware of the consequences of creating a world without privacy. If we want to reclaim privacy in the digital age, the answer is not to throw out our devices, it’s to truly embrace technology, and leverage all the new, cutting edge privacy and encryption technologies being developed every day. We are empowered human beings. And many of us arent just passive enjoyers of technology -- we have a say in the direction that this technology will take, and are helping write its future. Its in our power to make sure that the future we create is the best possible timeline, not the worst. So let’s be intentional about the kind of future we want. 00:00 1984 vs Reality 05:36 Current State of Privacy 10:43 Surveillance & The Risk To Freedom 18:52 Psychological Impact of Pervasive Surveillance 23:37 Recap So Far 24:14 What Can We Do 33:45 Make Privacy a Human Right 35:45 Q&A - Voluntary Surrender of Data 39:52 Q&A - “I Have Nothing To Hide” 43:45 Q&A - Living up to the title “Private Citizen” 44:24 Q&A - Data Hoarding Liability 46:45 Q&A - SnapChat 49:18 Q&A - How to Change Work Privacy Culture 51:18 Q&A - Staying Private in a Cashless Society Brought to you by NBTV members: Will Sandoval, Cube Boy, and Naomi Brockwell Special thanks to Cactus Con for having me, and helping spread awareness about the importance of privacy! Stop Your Programs Reporting Your Activity with Little Snitch

https://youtu.be/_0EiqiPuR4Q https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Little-Snitch:7 Our computers constantly talk to servers across the internet without us realizing, sharing information about our activities. Most of us dont even realize how many programs are silently connecting to the internet and sharing data. It usually happens without our explicit consent. But we can block these connections. On Mac, you can use a program called Little Snitch. In this video we look at the data is silently transmitted from our computer through things like telemetry, and show you how to use Little Snitch to regain control over the data leaving your computer. 00:00 Your Computer’s SECRET WHISPERS 01:39 Data Leaving Your Computer 04:02 Little Snitch Walkthrough 10:13 Bazzell’s Settings 10:35 A Note About Alerts and Rules 11:48 Conclusion Using a reverse firewall like Little Snitch can be very revealing about how much data is silently being transmitted from our computer. Simply becoming aware of this can help us make better decisions with the tech we use. Our suggestions come from privacy expert Michael Bazzell, and we highly recommend you check out his site: https://inteltechniques.com/blog/2021/08/18/macos-telemetry-update Little Snitch can be found here: obdev.at There is a similar product that apparently doesnt have the same granular functionality but is free called Lulu. https://youtu.be/n_kTzu8NEyg https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Back-up-Photos-privately:7 Photos these days usually stay in digital form. Sometimes we back them up to the cloud for safekeeping: but who is getting access to your sensitive images when you do so? In this video we look at the built-in photo backup options on iPhone and Android, and how private they really are. We also explore more private backup solutions, and how to set them up to happen automatically so that you never have to worry about losing your precious memories ever again. Decentralized Storage

https://youtu.be/rOtMGJVp2MU https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/decentralized-storage:6 We put a lot of trust in cloud storage providers, presuming that they’ll keep our data safe. But what if theyre hacked? Or their servers go down? Or what if they decide to just kick us out of our accounts, and we lose all our emails, files, contacts, photos... Theres another big problem with centralizing all our storage on a single platform: it turns out the whole world is doing it. Most of the worlds data is stored by just 3 companies: Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. In this video we’re going to talk about how a handful of companies came to control most of the world’s data, how this could put our data in danger and make censorship easier, and we’ll explore the new world of decentralized storage, allowing control of the internet to be distributed back to individuals. 00:00  The BIG problem with Cloud Storage 02:11 The Move Towards Centralized Storage 04:13 Risks of Data Centralization 07:40 Decentralized Storage Options 10:27 The DJ and the War Crimes 11:44 Conclusion 13:19 WTF We need to make sure that we are protecting our from loss and censorship. Decentralized storage allows us to return to the ideals of the early internet, that promised a connected world where information flows freely. No SIM? No Problem!

https://youtu.be/RyirQOCUUK8 https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Calyx:7 Your phone is more than just a communication tool; it’s a powerful tracking device, and the SIM card inside is a key reason why. I don’t actually have a SIM card in any of my phones, and in this video I’ll explain the reasons why. I’ll also talk about alternative ways that you can still have connectivity on the go without a SIM in your phone, and I’ll dive into the downsides of not having a SIM in your phone. 00:00 Your Phone is a Tracking Tool 01:12 What is a SIM 01:44 Location Tracking 02:36 Covert Data Transmission 06:35 Split Tunneling 08:40 Internet-Only Phones 10:52 Mobile Hotpots 11:28 Benefits of Siloing SIM on a Separate Device 14:28 Calyx Hotspots 16:33 Downsides 18:36 Support the Calyx Institute 20:30 Summary Having a SIM card in your phone has a lot of privacy downsides. THIS is why privacy is CRUCIAL

https://youtu.be/eR7D6Fx0fTQ https://odysee.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Privacy-in-the-Digital-Age:1 Many of us dont fully grasp the importance of privacy for a free society. We allow total invasion of our privacy, making a bet that we and those in power will stay on good terms, so this data will never be used against us. But as Snowden said, regimes come and go, social norms change, but that data is forever. Privacy is not a tool for criminals, as many would have you believe. Its essential for regular people, to allow them to dissent, have independent thoughts, hold people accountable without fearing retribution. In this video, we explore the crucial link between privacy and a free society, and why we must immediately fight to reclaim the narrative around privacy and surveillance. 00:00 Intro 00:33 Historical Losses of Privacy 01:40 Privacy Loss Happening Right Now 03:11 Why Protecting Privacy NOW is Essential 05:46 People Become Targets Everyday 06:51 Nefarious Truth About Data Collection 08:40 The Current False Narrative on Privacy 09:33 What’s at Stake? 10:12 What You Can Do Right Now 10:41 Conclusion The erosion of privacy is not inevitable. But we must start to care, and stop normalizing surveillance. Can We Build a Better Internet?

https://youtu.be/HYAQYbE63wo https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Creating-a-better-internet:9 The internet has fundamentally transformed the way we communicate and access information. But while it lifts us up, it has also become the most potent enabler of totalitarian surveillance that the world has ever seen. In this talk, I explore the privacy implications of our growing digital world, and the kind of future we are paving the way towards. I also dive into what we can do today to try to ensure a better future. 00:00 The Internets Double-Edged Sword 03:33 Current State of Privacy 07:46 Effects of Pervasive Surveillance 18:22 The Normalization of Surveillance and its Psychological Effects 25:00 Recap So Far 25:34 What Can We Do TODAY for a Better Tomorrow 33:54 Conclusion As we celebrate the marvel that is the modern digital world, it’s vital we recognize the internet’s dual nature: it’s as much a beacon of enlightenment as it is a potential tool for surveillance. History is riddled with instances where powerful entities have misused it to target the vulnerable and the voiceless. As we craft the web’s future, let’s not just innovate; let’s protect. Every line of code, every infrastructure choice, every innovation can not only push the boundaries of what’s technologically possible, but can also uphold the fundamental right to privacy for billions of people across the globe. When Data Brokers Ruin Lives

https://youtu.be/b0d90ul4ELE https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/data-brokers-ruin-lives:d Data brokers are like invisible digital packrats, silently harvesting every piece of data about us that they can find. But the information provided by data brokers isn’t always correct. This is a problem because its often heavily relied on by law enforcement as evidence, without being independently verified. In this video, hacker and researcher Ghost Exodus explains how his life took a dramatic turn because of inaccurate information provided by data brokers. Telegram Isn't As Private As You Think

https://youtu.be/rtRQKQkvUfE https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Telegram:68 Telegram advertises itself as a private messaging app, and has attracted over 800 million users. But Telegram is one of the last apps Id recommend if youre looking for private communication. In this video we explain how encryption actually works on Telegram: how its not possible to end-to-end encrypt group chats, and how direct messages are not private by default. There are also some red flags about their encryption protocol, and how they present their overall privacy to the broader public. 00:00 Intro 00:47 Group Chats 01:38 One to One Messages 04:25 Encryption 05:54 Who Gets Access to Your Data? 08:27 Conclusion Group chats on Telegram are wildly popular. But just remember that those messages are all able to be read by Telegram, as well as anyone else who is able to get access. I dont want anyone being misled about the privacy on the platform due to impressive marketing campaigns. They Sell Your Data to EVERYONE

https://youtu.be/GQHutNQVLgw https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Data-Brokers:b Data brokers know a lot about us. They silently harvest any information they can find, by purchasing information, using trackers, scraping social media, ingesting data breaches. They compile this information into databases, and sell access so that others can sift through the most private and sensitive areas of our lives. In this video we pull back the curtain on a largest player in this industry - LexisNexis Risk Solutions, and talk about their giant contracts to sell data to governments. 00:00 Data Brokers 01:53 LexisNexis Risk Solutions 04:17 How Your Data is Collected 07:01 Risk to Civil Liberties 11:16 Lets stop normalizing surveillance! 12:25 Lawsuits and Investigations 12:54 What Can We Do 15:20 Proactive Steps You Can Take TODAY Data is the new currency. How To Make Private Transactions, & Why It's Crucial

https://youtu.be/tIr9GfCtd9U https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Private-Transactions:b Financial privacy is essential for a free society, because it allows us to support causes we believe in without fear of retribution, to flee dangerous situations without being tracked, to live our daily lives without feeling like every choice we make is on display and needs to be self-censored. How can we have a truly free society if the way we interact with the world around us is constantly monitored and controlled? But thats exactly whats going on right now. In this presentation I explain how surveillance of the traditional financial system works, and what solutions there are for reclaiming your right to financial privacy. 00:00 Financial Privacy Is Crucial for a Free Society 2:22 Traditional Financial System is Controlled, Censored, and Monitored 3:29 Talk Overview 5:38 Everyone Is Selling Your Financial Data 6:42 People Are Persecuted Because Their Payments Are Monitored 8:42 History of Financial Surveillance 13:02 3rd-Party Doctrine 14:07 Cash 17:59 Bitcoin 18:40 Cryptocurrencies are NOT private! 19:53 Tip #1: Use Privacy Coins 26:20 Tip #2: No Pass-Through Privacy 29:11 Tip #3: Break Up Patterns 33:57 Tip #4: Protect Against OSINT Privacy Leaks 39:23 Tip #5: Beware of Active Analysis Tricks 44:55 Alternative Financial Systems ARE The Answer 47:03 Audience Q&A Traditional privacy tools like cash continue to dwindle in relevance, but cryptocurrencies like privacy coins present themselves as torchbearers of financial privacy in this new digital era. But the level of privacy you get is contingent upon the choices you make -- its not enough to use things like privacy coins, you have to know how to use them properly. This will change the fabric of society...

https://youtu.be/MBBOjf7fLrc https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/The-erosion-of-privacy-and-its-consequences:3 Privacy is assaulted in broad daylight and everything we do is recorded with an unforgiving permanence. We trade away our private data for services and conveniences -- not realizing that the government has become party to every agreement we enter into. Due to the 3rd-Party Doctrine, we have no reasonable expectation of privacy in the digital age. The government uses this loophole to purchase data from brokers, completely evading the boundaries established by the 4th amendment. This invasion into our lives has become completely normalized. Even if we dont value privacy ourselves, by not standing up for privacy we actually hurt the most vulnerable in society. In this video I talk about the very real horrors that have occurred throughout history when surveillance becomes a tool for oppression, stripping away the freedoms of the people, and changing the fabric of society. I explain why this is where we are heading. I also explain some simple steps you can take TODAY tell you what steps you can take TODAY to protect yourself. 00:00 Terrifying Poll: Yes, youre complicit too! 04:31 1984 is NOW 07:02 Government Data Collection 16:21 Modern Dystopian Governments 23:26 Historical Losses of Civil Liberties 26:00 Surveillance Today 31:29 Free Speech is in Danger 34:01 What Can We Do? 38:26 Privacy Tools 43:28 Conclusion It’s essential that we start to reclaim the narrative and remind people that privacy is crucial for a free society. Most PRIVATE Video Watching Apps!

https://youtu.be/NtXRkKs_PA8 https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Youtube-alternative-apps:3 When you want to watch videos on your phone, youre probably using an app whose dual role behind the scenes is to gather as much information about you as it can. It observes all of your actions, and adds all this information to a database about you that it shares with thousands of other companies. Why not use a more private video-streaming app? In this video we explore alternatives, and explain how each works. 00:00 Intro 01:00 Overview 01:10 Data Collection 04:27 Important Disclaimer! 04:58 NewPipe 09:38 LibreTube 10:36 LBRY/Odysee 13:39 TryLBRY App 13:49 Conclusion We have the power to choose how much of our digital self we share and who has access to that information. Surveillance Coins Are Coming

https://youtu.be/QZ8dmZiY05I https://open.lbry.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/CBDCs:c20 CBDCs will put financial privacy, financial freedom, and security in grave danger. Its a new kind of money that will put the government at the center of digital transactions. In this video we chat with Marta Belcher, President of the Filecoin Foundation, about how CBDCs work and are different from the digital money we currently use, why CBDCs are dangerous for a free society, and what you can do to protect yourself as we usher in this new era of digital finance. 00:00 Intro 00:47 Overview 01:15 How CBDCs Work 05:07 Dangers of CBDCs 11:53 Global Interest 13:55 What You Can Do 15:55 Outro Privacy is essential for a free society. Most PRIVATE App Stores!

https://youtu.be/PdxooS4g5tM https://odysee.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Alt-app-store:f App stores are central to how we use our smartphones. If you’re on Android you probably get all your apps from the Google Play Store, and if you’re on iOS you get your apps from the Apple App store. But there’s a catch: to access these app stores, you first have to sign in to an account. It links your app activity to a single identity and is a big privacy concern. In this video we give you two options for more privacy-preserving app stores that you can use instead when you download apps to your phone. 00:00 Intro 00:35 Overview 00:48 Tying Downloads to an Account 03:16 F-Droid 06:14 Aurora Store 08:33 Conclusion Alternative app stores, like F-Droid and Aurora Store not only allow you to enjoy phone apps without tying them to a single identity, but they also give you a greater variety of app choices, including those that are better for your privacy.
