It's estimated that over 115 million people globally suffer from obesity-related problems. Many reports state that Obesity continues to be a significant Public Health crisis. However, there are very few funeral options for a deceased obese person. On this episode of N&H we'll be talking about "Death Fat" and "Fat Funerals" with our special guest Isabella Carr. We'll also discuss death work, death doulas, the importance of having a 'death plan,' various different types of funeral and burial options and their exorbitant costs. Even though we are talking about death, we share many interesting stories including 'Funeral of a Fat Girl,' the story of Blanche Moses an entertainer living at the 'Freaks' boarding house, comedian Chris Farley's funeral and many more quirky facts.
Isabella Carr is an artist, theologian, and death-worker. She is currently a graduate student at Harvard Divinity School and working with Death Doula LA founder Jill Schock this summer as part of her field education. Her doula and research focus is a practical and theological project, "Deathfat: Fat Funerals and Futurities," which focuses on the end-of-life needs of fat people and their loved ones.
