In this episode co-hosts Steve Fielder and Corey Gruver are joined by coon hunter, trainer and handler Mark Miller of Taylorsville, North Carolina. Miller recently completed the Holy Grail of coon hunting, the United Kennel Club Grand Nite Champion title with a Plott dog co-owned by Steve and himself, Bear Pen Fever. The trio drill down into Fever’s success story discussing the young hound’s progression from a five-month-old puppy to reaching the pinnacle in competition hunting at less than two and one-half years old. Corey leads the interview leaving few stones unturned in terms of exactly what’s involved in achieving the Grand Nite Champion and other UKC titles. Fever currently holds titles in Field Trials, Water Races, Nite Hunting, Hunt Tests and Bench Showing in UKC as well as Nite Hunting in Professional Kennel Club events. The expense, the determination, the challenges and the setbacks are all fair game. Of particular interest to listeners will be the reasons a confirmed, highly successful Treeing Walker fancier would embark on the arduous journey with a Plott of all available breeds. Steve wades the murky waters of why Plott hunters may be more prone to breed to dogs in their own backyards. Hiring the right land and wildlife consultant can make a monumental impact on your property. But if you make a bad hire, you may end up with detrimental ideas and waste of funds. There is quite a bit of parody in the space and you should do your homework to secure the right fit for your specific needs. Who has real experience in your region and who is simply regurgitating buzz words from social media. Should you hire a national consultant or stay localized? Land, just like any form of real estate, will be the largest purchase for most people and it should be treated like an investment. I cover many ways to secure someone that will be most suitable for your goals. Just because a consultant has name recognition, doesn't mean that they won't "phone in" a canned report which I have personally seen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this episode of Huntavore, Nick is on a wild ride of life, work, and family. Spring Break is around the corner, and plans to put more pork away is coming up fast. For many of us who have spring hunts and future bounty to store, consolidating and organizing our freezers is a must. Is it by species, or is it muscle specific? How to handle odd shaped cuts? Can I make accessing specific pieces easier? These are all questions that are covered on this episode of Huntavore. After a winter’s worth of rummaging, Nick’s freezers are in disarray. Needing some organization and some consolidation as his bounty is between 3 freezers. To the average hunter this may not be the most fun topic, but to anyone who puts multiple animals up each year, having a system to organize your wildgame is pretty important. Nick is also going to be adding more wild pork so bringing inventory from 3 freezers into 2 is needed to make room. Full freezers are cold freezers, being more efficient at keeping temps low and in turn keeping meat frozen solid. Batch cooking is also a great way to put odd cuts like shanks and shoulders into uniform packaging. Nick made a large batch of barbacoa and carnitas just to freeze into vac bags. Nothing is better than a thaw cook and serve meal with wild game. Now is the time to be fine tuning your public hunting "spots", with the intent to increase your efficiency in the fall. How can one close the deal on a mature buck in October instead of waiting until November? With no green up yet to cover those scrapes, rubs, and beds, it is infinitely easier to identify areas of key deer movement and identify set ups that are closer to core mature buck areas. In this episode, Jacob shares what he found in his own efforts to find the spot within the spot in a public land big woods hunting area that has produced well for him in the past. In this episode Steve and Corey put on their legislative caps and address a piece of current legislation in the State of Pennsylvania that portents big problems for the dog hunter. The bill comes under the umbrella of anti-trespass legislation and provides exorbitant penalties for hunting dogs and their owners that find themselves afoul of the provisions of the bill, whether advertently or not. The boys hash out the bill and provide information for hunters in Pennsylvania and elsewhere that want to let their voices be heard before the bill reaches the dangerous environs of the Senate floor. The conversation takes on a more pleasant vibe as the boys cover the oldest and one of the most-popular breeds of trail and tree hounds, the American Black and Tan Coonhound. The boys’ love for history is evident as they discuss early history, early founders and a long line of movers and shakers, human and canine, that have played such an important role in the breed’s seemingly timeless reign of popularity. If you like black dogs, or if you just like to look back over the many years of our tree hound sport, this is a good one for you. Them ole black dawgs! Learn more about your ad choices. This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, Tyrell Roy is back to talk about his Kansas public land whitetail adventure. Tyrell is a very accomplished whitetail hunter, and consistently kills mature bucks on his family farm and permission properties in northern Oklahoma. Like many of us whitetail nuts though, he was looking for the next challenge. He found all the challenge he could handle a little ways north on Kansas public land. After not drawing a tag in 2022, Tyrell set his sights on 2023 and was determined to make it happen. After the buck he scouted all summer was taken by another hunter on opening day, it was back to square one with the season already under way. With Kansas's recent trail camera ban, Tyrell had no other way to scout than boots on the ground and dirt on the tires. It took all season, but after a tip from a friend he was able to make a play on a great whitetail buck. If you have ever wanted to chase western whitetails, this is an episode you need to hear!
