The #1 Reason Mental Blocks Keep Coming Back

Today on the PerformHappy podcast, I want to delve into the most significant obstacle that keeps mental blocks persistently resurfacing. This is the very reason that led me to quit gymnastics at the tender age of 14. I hope that by discussing it today, we can shed light on whats truly keeping your young athlete stuck, and more importantly, how to break free from this relentless cycle. So, what is the #1 reason that mental blocks keep coming back? For me, this reason manifested as a mental block so debilitating that it felt insurmountable. Its a feeling that many athletes can relate to, where the sport you once loved starts to feel like a burden. You may even consider quitting, just as I did. But theres hope. You dont have to surrender to the fear of failure. You can overcome mental blocks and reignite your passion for your sport. Mental blocks can be conquered, and your athletes love for their sport can be rekindled. The journey may not be easy, but its entirely worth it. Together, we can empower our young athletes to rise above their fears and rediscover the joy in their chosen sports. In this episode, Coach Rebecca talks about: 00:00 Overcoming perfectionism. 04:52 How limiting beliefs in sport can hinder performance and potential. 08:22 The negative impact of pressure on young athletes. 12:54 Switching into a growth mindset. 17:38 The key to mastering mental blocks in gymnastics. How to Coach a Gymnast Through a Mental Block EP 298

* Today Coach Rebecca delves into a topic that every athlete and coach encounter at some point: the dreaded mental block. We’ve all witnessed it – those moments when we look at our athletes and see how tough and capable they are, and we can see from the outside that what they’re going through is a perspective issue. But helping them get through it can be frustrating.  * * When we look into how perspective plays in overcoming mental blocks, often these challenges are less about physical ability and more about how the athlete perceives their progress.  * * SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO:  * __ __ * * __ __ * Coach Rebecca encourages athletes—and coaches—to view setbacks as valuable opportunities for self-discovery. Rather than focusing solely on achieving new skills, aim for consistent progress. Every step forward, no matter how small, contributes to the overall journey.  * By embracing setbacks, redirecting efforts, and concentrating on controllable factors, athletes can build the mental resilience needed to conquer challenges and continue their pursuit of excellence. Gymnastics Coaches: The RIGHT Way to Stop the Balking EP 297

* Balking, also known as a mental block or a dip in confidence, occurs when an athlete struggles with a skill they’re fully capable of performing. Today Coach Rebecca responds to a coach's question about how to handle a student grappling with balking.   * She shares her current philosophy and two-balk rule, which includes a private discussion follows the first balk, and then the athlete is done for the day after the second balk. She also discusses the reasons why athletes balk.  * When balking happens, it reveals a fixed mindset, creating a black-and-white perspective. The brain perceives risk in the situation, triggering a fight, flight, or freeze response. It shows that the brain lacks confidence in the athlete's abilities, leading to a fear-based reaction rather than a rational one.  * * HERE’S A THREE-STEP PROCESS FOR ADDRESSING THIS:  * * __ __ * * Creating a flexible and collaborative environment is necessary in nurturing athletes who are happy and trusting. When athletes have confidence in themselves and trust in their coaches, they feel secure in expressing their needs and concerns.   * Building confidence is a journey, and with the right support and mindset, athletes can navigate through balking and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever.

How to Help Your Athlete When They're Struggling with Confidence (But They Don't Want Help) EP 296

* As parents, we all want the best for our young athletes, especially when they're going through tough times. But what should you do if your child resists the help and guidance we offer? In this episode, Coach Rebecca addresses this common concern and provides valuable insights for parents seeking ways to understand and support their athletes effectively.  * During their pre-teen and teenage years, it’s entirely normal for children to seek some distance from their parents. This developmental phase is marked by their quest for independence and the shaping of their identities. It's essential to recognize that their resistance might have a biological basis as their brains undergo significant changes during this period.  * In some cases, kids may not even realize they need help. We need to allow them space to recognize when they can improve and understand when to ask for help. Instead of arguing with them when they insist everything’s fine, try to agree with them while gently encouraging deeper reflection on their situation. Give them the freedom to figure things out and learn from their experiences.  * * Embarrassment can also be a reason why young athletes avoid seeking help. They might fear standing out or being seen as different from their peers, especially if they require additional training or support. As parents, it's essential to create an environment where they feel safe to open up and share their challenges without judgment.  * The key lies in building a strong and trusting relationship with your child based on hope and trust. Coach Rebecca emphasizes the importance of teaching parents how to foster hope and trust with their kids. By creating a safe space where young athletes feel understood, supported, and free to share their experiences, parents can lay the foundation for open communication and the willingness to seek help when needed.  * * Join Coach Rebecca in this episode as she shares essential strategies for building a supportive and trusting relationship with your athlete, empowering them to embrace growth and seek help when facing challenges. Remember, creating a nurturing and understanding environment can be the catalyst for your child's continued growth and success in their sports journey.  * FREE RESOURCES  * How To Help Your Gymnast Overcome Mental Blocks (Without Being Too Controlling Or Too Involved): Online Training
