Marc Smith and Jeremy Dugger

Muleys with Marc Smith and Jeremy Dugger Show Notes:   Marc Smith,  and Jeremy Dugger (AKA Muley Mojo) joined me at the Hunt Expo. We enjoyed the show and got to catch up on a bunch of good stuff. Marc moved out into the Four Corners area of New Mexico back in ‘94/’95 for his job, and he met Jeremy, who was working at the local archery shop. They immediately hit it off, and they’ve been a dynamic duo ever since.    Marc and Jeremy share some stories from their hunts, and we kick off with a good one that shows how they split responsibilities between Jeremy’s scouting and game eye and Marc’s magnetic mule deer aura. We talk about whether or not game eye is a God-given gift or if it’s something that can be developed with practice. The guys also share how their seamless teamwork helps them bring down big bucks.   Jeremy gives some of his best scouting tips, why he’s a fan of tracking over glassing, and some of the tools he uses to get the job done. We chat about why getting up in scoring takes away from what hunting’s all about, how we feel about having to fill every tag we get, and Jeremy and Marc’s epic “shining beams” story.  What’s Inside:   __ Perspectives on having to fill every tag you get __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Marc Smith on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/C3wWaybu8PD/ Jeremy Dugger on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/muleymojo/ Short Description: Marc Smith, the Muley Slayer and Jeremy Dugger (AKA Muley Mojo) joined me at the Hunt Expo. Jana Waller and John Bair

Making Strides in Advocacy and Conservation with Jana Waller and John Bair Show Notes:   I got to hang out with the dynamic duo, Jana Waller and John Bair, at the recent Western Hunting & Conservation Expo in Utah. Both of them are power players when it comes to hunting advocacy efforts, and I’m so thankful I got to chat with them. Jana has been in the hunting industry for 14 years but has been a hunter her whole life. She’s got 30+ years of big game hunting experience and started out hunting with her dad in Wisconsin.    John is also known as “John the Auctioneer,” and he’s one of the most successful conservation auctioneers in the nation. He served as Chairman of the Board on the Wildlife Board in Utah and has over two and a half decades of serving and volunteering experience in conservation throughout the state. John’s family has been in the Colorado ranching business for over 100 years, and he grew up an avid predator hunter.   John and Jana have done a ton to help us out at Howl for Wildlife, and together, they belong to 15 different conservation organizations. Hunting advocacy doesn’t work unless hunters are active, and here, we talk about some of the current efforts that are making a difference. We also talk about reaching and educating non-hunters, fundraising wins and challenges, and more.   What’s Inside:   __ Why it’s important to portray hunting respectfully __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/   Short Description: I got to hang out with the dynamic duo, Jana Waller and John Bair, at the recent Western Hunting & Conservation Expo in Utah. Dialed In Hunter, Josh Kirchner Coues , muleys and hunting in general

A Chat with the Dialed In Hunter, Josh Kirchner Show Notes:   Josh Kirchner runs Dialed In Hunter, a blog that not only documents his own journey and growth as a hunter but also provides gear reviews, tips/tactics for western hunting and encourages other hunters to chase and achieve their goals. He’s a passionate bowhunter who has been hunting with his family since he was small.    For the last six years, Josh has been eating, sleeping, and breathing the hunting lifestyle. Josh also does freelance writing for various online editorials and print publications. He provides high quality photos with every article, which have been used by companies like First Lite, Exo Mountain Gear, Katadyn, and Dark Timber Coffee.    Josh shot a pretty good Coues deer recently, and here we recap some highlights from his hunt. I also share my own story about the buck I shot, and we talk about our ideal range to shoot from with a bow. We also talk about how having a family changes the way we hunt, breaking into the hunting industry, and the importance of observation and creating the right opportunities. Why Hunting Activism Matters with Dan Gates

Why Your Activism Matters with Dan Gates Show Notes:   Dan Gates runs Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management (CRWM) as Executive Director. CRWM was formed back in 2017, and they do a lot of hunting lobbying, advocacy, and education as a 501(c). Their mission is to enhance, promote, and defend the North American model of wildlife conservation and responsible wildlife management. Dan is also the President of the Colorado Trappers and Predator Hunters Association and he’s been working with us on some things for Howl for Wildlife.   Dan has intimate knowledge of wildlife issues and believes that if you’re not sitting at the table, you’re on the menu. Politics is part of wildlife conservation, but many hunters just want to hunt and not get involved. There are only a few people in the fight, and we’ve lost a lot of ground due to our current organizations not being organized properly.    Here, Dan and I talk about how CRWM is working to make significant changes and cast a wider net. There’s a big disconnect in the hunting community when things come up that seemingly don’t impact them directly. Dan shares his thoughts on how we can get people to connect the dots. We also discuss what Dan’s doing to make key changes in the legislature, how the anti-hunting world tries to push their agenda, and more.   What’s Inside:   __ Why community education on conservation issues is critical __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Save the Hunt Colorado https://savethehuntcolorado.com/   Short Description: Dan Gates runs Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management (CRWM) as Executive Director. Creating opportunities to find success

Creating opportunities and how that translates into success even in Florida  Show Notes:   The Southern Collective is composed of consummate outdoorsmen whose roots stretch across the Deep South and who believe in Hunt Camp. They’re bringing it back by hosting hunting camps across the South, creating relatable content for the southern outdoorsman, and by creating a Digital Hunt Camp for those times when we can’t be in the great outdoors.   I recently had the opportunity to collaborate with the Southern Collective on a podcast episode where we cover all things Florida hunting. Florida can be described as the pinnacle of hard work, and we dive into tips and lessons learned. Hunting in Florida tops my list of toughest hunts, and a huge part of it is the bugs alone. We get into terrain challenges, hunting on public vs. private land, and more.   Creating opportunities is a big part of success in hunting, regardless of which state you’re hunting in. I share my thoughts on how to make things happen, including finding your edge and tracking your progress.  We talk about how important confidence is and how it can make or break you, and we share some stories about what we’ve learned along the way.  What’s Inside:   __ Why confidence is key in your hunting game __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Southern Collective on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/soco_hunt The Southern Collective Hunting Podcast https://open.spotify.com/show/0aYRJCf6NJHqUquY9ii1AA?si=ae63b4f468794eea   Short Description: I recently had the opportunity to collaborate with the Southern Collective on a podcast episode where we cover all things Florida hunting. Victory Drive Podcast Collaboration with Jacob Johnson

Victory Drive Podcast Collaboration with Jacob Johnson Show Notes:   I was recently asked to collaborate with Jacob Johnson, a fellow hunting advocate and host of the Victory Drive Podcast. Here, Jacob and I cover a lot of ground. In the first portion of our collaboration, we chat about where in the country we’ve hunted and what’s on our bucket list. We get into details about a giveaway I’m doing on a mule deer hunt valued at over $1,300, and the proceeds are going to Howl for Wildlife. We also talk about hunting advocacy and how you can get involved.   Jacob and I talk about the problem with the strategy of replacing human hunters with apex predators, like coyotes. We’re seeing reductions in discounted tags and programs because of the increase in wolves and the reduction in game. I share how Howl for Wildlife is fundraising and the impact we’re having on trying to turn things around. We also discuss ways to get everyone on board, even non-hunters.   Towards the end of our conversation, we chat about the support hunting receives from gun advocacy and sport shooting and how the anti-gun mentality hurts our cause. We talk about some of the bills in play and how some taxation initiatives may set us back. We wrap up with some thoughts around our frustrations with current advocacy efforts and what it would take to make us the most powerful.  What’s Inside:   __ How partnering with gun advocates and sport shooting makes us stronger __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Victory Drive Podcast on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/victorydrivepod/   Short Description: I was recently asked to collaborate with Jacob Johnson, a fellow podcaster and host of the Victory Drive Podcast. Michael Cravens Hunting in AZ

Arizona Wildlife Federation Podcast Collaboration with Michael Cravens Show Notes:   Michael Cravens runs the Arizona Wildlife Federation Podcast, and we recently joined forces to do a show together. Michael is the Advocacy and Conservation Director for the Arizona Wildlife Federation, which is the oldest conservation organization in the state. The group’s roots are in sporting, and they formed back in 1923 to create the first commission for wildlife management in Arizona to take it out of the hands of the legislature.   The Arizona Wildlife Federation works on education, volunteer habitat improvements and restorations, and advocacy, which is Michael’s primary role. He tracks good and bad bills and acts accordingly as it benefits the organization. Here, Michael and I discuss some of the things going on around the country right now and how they bleed into what we have going on in Arizona.    It’s so important for citizens to be educated on wildlife issues so they can make informed voting decisions on what’s happening. Michael and I chat about misinformation and what we can do to combat it. We also share our thoughts around conservation vs. preservation, why hunting advocacy impacts far more than just hunting alone, and much more.  What’s Inside:   __ Why we need wildlife and conservation advocacy now more than ever __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Arizona Wildlife Federation Podcast https://azwildlife.org/Podcast Arizona Wildlife Federation https://azwildlife.org/ Short Description: Michael Cravens runs the Arizona Wildlife Federation Podcast, and we recently joined forces to do a show together. No more deer hunting

In our first syndicated HOWLCAST Update of 2024 we focus on How hunting is much more interconnected than you think and how losing hunting in other states will affect you. We also discuss two of the hotspots that need nationwide attention and support from the hunting and outdoors community: Washington State and Colorado. Because the anti-hunting industry uses their nationwide fundraising, legal and political power to attack at the local and state level, it has become crystal clear that hunters, anglers and supporters of true wildlife conservation need to rally together. The threats that face WA and CO this year can and will surface in dozens of other states - either by forcing changes to predator management, methods of take, taking away trapping or removing your ability to hunt/trail/track/retrieve game with sporting dogs & hounds.    HOWLCAST and HOWL For Wildlife is a resource for our community. Mr. Consistent Creed Christinat

Mr. Consistent Creed Christinat Show Notes:   Creed Christinat is usually a do-or-die Coues deer guy, but he recently shot a giant mule deer. Here, he shares the story about how he got this buck. Creed tried to walk away, but he was just way too impressive to pass up. He had a history with the animal, and Creed goes through the whole journey from when he got the tag to when he took him down.    Even though he says he fails a lot more than he wins, Creed is totally "Mr. Consistent” and puts in a ton of work. Creed says the trophy is in the eye of the beholder, and we talk about how much respect we have for people who ultimately get the job done within the timeframes they have, which sometimes isn’t a lot.    Creed hasn’t scored his muley buck quite yet, and he says he’d rather enjoy him for a bit before he does so. We talk about why we wait sometimes and how, in some cases, we’d rather not know. Creed also shares a great story about an encounter with a coyote on another antelope buck hunt. After a few days of tracking the buck, he sees it flying out of the trees with a coyote on his tail and chases him right out into a meadow! After running in his direction, they turn, and Creed talks about the decision he had to make.   What’s Inside:   __ Creed’s encounter with an antelope and a coyote __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Creed Christinat on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/creed_christinat   Short Description: Creed Christinat is usually a do-or-die Coues deer guy, but he recently shot a giant mule deer. Shafer

Shafer the passion to leave your mark Show Notes:   Typically, any music that has anything about hunting in it is in the country genre, but Michael Shafer is breaking the mold. His music is so unique and filled with positive messaging. I’m originally from Brooklyn, and I grew up on rap and hip hop and his style immediately resonated with me. Shafer joins me here to discuss his musical journey, and we talk about the success he’s seen so far.    Shafer’s from Utah, and hunting has always been a part of his family heritage. He was influenced by hip hop as a city kid. When you think of a rapper, you don’t usually think about a white, Mormon kid from Utah, but Shafer is blazing his own trail. We talk about where he gets his inspiration from, how he writes his music, and how he deals with haters.    Shafer and I dive into how his music humanizes hunting and how his message serves as a voice for hunting advocacy. Shafer also shares one of his best hunting stories. Hunting Javelina with Rick Forrest

Hunting Javelina with Rick Forrest Show Notes:   Hunting javelina is near and dear to my heart, and I always have a good time doing it. The legendary Rick Forrest joins me here to share some of his javelina hunting tips. Rick’s been in the hunting space for a long time, especially in the engineering and gear areas. He’s an Arizona native and shot his first javelina at the age of 10. At 13, he got into archery and got hooked on bow hunting. The last deer he shot with a firearm was way back in ’86!   Rick’s killed a javelina every year since his first one, and some years he gets two. Between him and his family members, he’s been involved in around 300 kills. We kick off our conversation with some info about the calls Rick’s developed. He has some stuff on the fixed blade side in development as well. Next, we dive into javelina hunting. Rick shares his habitat tips for how to find them. Spending time scouting and glassing is key.    Rick and I share our thoughts on the best time to catch javelina, since we’ve caught them both at first light and later in the morning. We talk about why you shouldn’t pick on a herd too much and Rick’s top calling tips with examples. We also get into our experiences with what happens when Javelina goes on the attack and how to connect with Rick and buy a call.   What’s Inside:   __ How to get in touch with Rick to purchase a call __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Rick Forrest on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/rick.forrest.98/ Rick Forrest on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/rick.forrest.98   Short Description: The legendary Rick Forrest joins me here to share some of his javelina hunting tips. Deer Behavior 101 with Moriah Boggess

Deer Behavior 101 with Moriah Boggess Show Notes:   I think it’s important to understand deer behavior, regardless of which kind of specific deer you hunt. Getting a good, rounded perspective on what deer do and being able to apply that to your hunting is key. Moriah Boggess is a subject matter expert on deer biology and management. As a deer biologist, Moriah spends his time doing research coordination, working with policy, and handling disease surveillance and management.   Moriah lives on the coast in North Carolina, and we start by talking about the different rut periods all around the country. Sometimes, within a state, you can have several ruts as you move around. We then get into home range, how it changes with the seasons, and how it impacts hunting. Bucks have two jobs in life: to stay alive and leave a legacy. Depending on what time of the year it is, home ranges change based on these priorities.   Moriah and I also discuss scrapes, rubs, and other things that’ll help us uplevel our deer hunting game. Both are communication mechanisms for deer, and Moriah talks about their different purposes. Our conversation also includes how the weather affects deer behavior, behavioral attributes of deer that you can key on to help you tag out, deer body language, and more. Muley Hunting with Richie Wilhelm

Muley Hunting with Richie Wilhelm Show Notes:   Richie Wilhelm joins me for a little storytelling session, and I pick his brain on a few things. Richie owns and operates a small residential construction company in the La Crosse area of Wisconsin. He began the business around 15 years ago, and although self-employment comes with challenges, it’s allowed Richie to get the time off he needs around hunting season.    We kick things off by talking about Arizona deer hunting and how the weather impacts herds. Richie had two mule deer tags this year in different states, and he killed two of his top three ever. He had two bad years of chasing whitetails, but his muley chase paid off. We talk about spotting and stalking whitetails and which states are best for sitting in a tree stand.   Richie shares the story of the first muley buck he shot back in September. He had ten days on a solo trip and hunted an area that he had some intel on. He finally got him from around 59 yards away and hit the buck in the shoulder. Unfortunately, Richie lost him, but tried again and headed back out about a month later. After a bunch of trials and tribulations and a storm thrown in, he finally got him and felt like he was on cloud nine. 6.5 CM the worst gun ever?

Crazy Coues Deer Story with Dave Maher Show Notes:   I just had a crazy experience with a recent client on a Coues deer hunt, and Dave Maher’s here to help me unpack it all. Dave’s been on the show before, and he’s my go-to guy when it comes to gun stuff. My client was physically challenged, and I hunted with him for three days. I found several opportunities, but unfortunately, we couldn’t get to any fast enough.    I also had Ryan with me, and he later found a good buck. Even though my client could shoot and he had a good setup, we were too far away. I decided to try to get as close as I could, but the best I could do was 700 yards. All of a sudden, the buck comes out of a tree, and my client hits the buck’s shoulder. He took a second shot, and the buck shot straight up into the air and dove forward into some trees, but he was still alive!   We moved in a little closer to wait for the buck to do something, and he eventually stood up. My client shot again, but missed. At this point, we don’t have another shot, but the deer got up again. Ryan got his eyes on him, and the buck walked into some trees. From here, we go on a crazy chase to find this deer and he eventually goes down for good. Here, Dave gives his analysis of the hunt and his take on why this buck was so hard to take down.  What’s Inside:   __ Gun and bullet tips for deer hunting. __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Short Description: I just had a crazy experience with a recent client on a Coues deer hunt, and Dave Maher’s here to help me unpack it all. Archery Ops Podcast with Tim Gillingham

Archery Ops Podcast with Tim Gillingham Show Notes:   I recently had the privilege of joining Tim Gillingham on his Archery Ops Podcast. On his show, Tim talks with the top experts in archery and bowhunting about what it takes to shoot better target after target, hunt after hunt, and shot after shot!    Tim and I start off by talking about the history of the Days in The Wild Podcast and how it got to what it is today. We then get into hunting ibex in the Florida mountains of New Mexico, which for many hunters is the toughest hunt out there. It has the highest abandonment rate, and it’s physically brutal, not to mention the constant dodging of poisonous snakes. Tim and I share some stories and compare notes.   We also talk about bow hunting and why I’m considering picking up an even lighter bow to better manage in the cold weather. Tim shares some tips on ballistic efficiency and how to choose the right arrows at different site levels. We talk about how to shoot angles and trade some more stories around bow torquing.   Tim asks me how I prepare for the hunting season, both mentally and physically. I used to do sports training, and since 1998, I have changed my mentality around hunt-specific training. Tim and I talk about how we like to target practice. We wrap up with our ideas on bow hunting education and how to get more folks involved and on board.    What’s Inside:   __ How I prepare for an upcoming hunting season __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Archery Ops Podcast https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkzHyL48cWmRUwhxyc7Ypb1noUxnMXXzU Gold Tip on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@GoldTipArrows   Short Description: I recently had the privilege of joining Tim Gillingham on his Archery Ops Podcast. South Dakota Recap with Dan Graff

South Dakota Recap with Dan Graff Show Notes:   We’re doing a South Dakota recap here with my longtime friend Dan Graff. The hunting game is always evolving, and Dan talks about some of the changes he’s noticed since he was last out. Dan and I chat about being challenged when hunting with folks who put in more effort than you and how it can bring out the best in you and make you better. The people you hunt with always make the experience.   Here, Dan and I break down our trip from start to finish. Our first hunt was on November 5th and I glassed up a buck I called Too Tall. I share the highs and lows of trying to get him and how things ultimately turned out. Dan shares his perspective on how it all went down, and we talk about how things don’t always turn out as planned, even if you have the perfect setup.   Sometimes you see people on social media having successes, but no one ever shows the bad. It’s very easy to look at things like that and think everyone’s doing well. I’ve questioned my own self and have wanted to quit several times.    I’m putting this out there and showing my vulnerability because I want others who feel the same way to know they’re not alone. For me, hunting is part of what I am and when I don’t have success, I view it as a negative reflection of who I am. My point is, don’t allow years of positivity and success to be erased by negativity. Focus on the good.    What’s Inside:   __ Why it’s important to focus on the positive __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Prairie Harvest https://prairieharvest.com/   Short Description: We’re doing a South Dakota recap here with my longtime friend, Dan Graff. Upcoming AZ and WY Draw with Dave Barnett

Upcoming AZ and WY Draw with Dave Barnett Show Notes:   Dave Barnett joins me here to talk about the Arizona elk and antelope draw. We also get into Wyoming, since that draw is coming up as well, and it’s a hot ticket. 2023 sailed by and Dave and I talk about how our year in hunting shaped up as things come to a close. I recap the highs and lows of some of my trips, and I’m hoping to redeem myself a little bit over the next couple of months.   There are no changes going into this year’s Arizona draw, and it’s looking like February 13th will be the draw deadline. Make sure you have your credit card updated by then, or else you might miss out on a tag! Dave and I talk about how the Arizona system works, including how bonus points work, how to view choices, and how they do their drawing. In my opinion, it’s the best system out there.   Dave and I get into how we feel about droughts and hunting according to moon phases. We then get into Wyoming and their draw system, which is one of the most convoluted out there. Dave shares how the units are set up and how they differ from Arizona. We talk about how the tags are split up, the difference between the regular and special draws, and more.  What’s Inside:   __ How to navigate the Wyoming draw __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/   Short Description: Dave Barnett joins me here to talk about the Arizona elk and antelope draw. Coues Deer with Fred Bohm

Title:  Coues Deer with Fred Bohm Show Notes:   Fred Bohm’s from the Tucson area, and he joins me here to talk about coues deer. He’s originally from New Jersey but headed west to Colorado after college. He’s been an Arizona resident for about a year and a half but has been hunting in the state for over 10 years. Fred’s father taught him how to hunt when he was younger, and he became obsessed with bow hunting early in the game. He got into coues deer hunting after snagging an OTC tag.   Fred’s known for his photography of his hunting escapades and has had a passion for it since he was a teen. He loves to inspire others, and I’ve always been a fan of his photos. Coues deer hunting season is coming up soon, and here, I pick Fred’s brain on his favorite hunting tips and tricks. We kick things off by talking about the difference in behavior in coues deer compared to eastern deer. Fred shares the characteristics you can use to your advantage to score.   Fred’s hunted a lot of different habitats throughout Arizona, and he shares his favorite spots. He shares his top rules for stalking coues deer and how to approach it. Fred and I also discuss his three most critical factors to contribute to hunting success, how to find the right areas, recommendations for equipment, and more. The ribeye in the sky John Odell

Hunting the Ribeye in the Sky with John Odell Show Notes:   John Odell joins me to chat about hunting the ribeye in the sky, also known as the sandhill crane. I drew a tag for the first time this year, so selfishly, I want to find out all about it. John was a wildlife biologist for Arizona Game and Fish for 17 years. He worked in the small game program, and last year, he felt a calling to leave the department to move to Buenos Aires, Argentina, for about eight months. There, he learned some Spanish and spent some time at a culinary school.   John’s back in the States now, and he’s currently cooking at the El Tovar restaurant in the Grand Canyon. Hunting and food go hand in hand, and now John gets to explore both of his passions. John and I get into the history of the culinary world of wild game, and he shares some of his experiences from around the world. We also talk about the history of conservation in America and people’s perspectives on hunting today.   Next, we get into sandhill crane hunting. They’re the oldest bird in the fossil record that’s remained unchanged, and they're really a sight to see. John runs through some of their stats, characteristics, and behavioral traits and shares a little about how the species has changed over time. John also shares hunting tips, including which type of sandhill crane is best to eat, insights into how these birds move around, the best hunting tactics, decoys and calls, and more.    What’s Inside:   __ John’s go-to calls for sandhill crane hunting __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Short Description: John Odell joins me to chat about hunting the ribeye in the sky, also known as the sandhill crane. Turning Feral with Zach Hanson

Turning Feral with Zach Hanson Show Notes:   Zach Hanson joins me to chat about his book Turning Feral as well as his journey from a career in AI tech to hunting. He’s currently gearing up for trapping season, which is his big push every year. We start by talking about our plans for the early season and why we’re looking forward to the later season. In hunting, we know things don’t always go our way, and we chat about how our failures make us appreciate our successes a whole lot more.   Zach’s first hunting teacher was YouTube, as he didn’t have anyone close to him in the sport. He then learned about hunting from his in-laws, and he got some education down in Tennessee. Once he got out west, he realized it was a different ball game, and he took advantage of some guidance out there. Zach shares how his interest in hunting started from an interest in food. After his divorce, he went all in on hunting and moved out to Idaho, where he now calls home with his new wife and their children.   Zach and I talk about how his experience with sports helped him cultivate a mindset that’s perfect for hunting. We both share some stories about how we got ourselves out of a jam and how that made us feel a sense of achievement and resilience. We also discuss some of the stories included in Turning Feral, Zach’s plans for his software company for outfitters, and much more.  What’s Inside:   __ Insights into Zach’s new software company for outfitters __   Mentioned in this episode Days In The Wild Podcast https://johnstallone.me/my-podcast/ Phoenix Shooting Bags https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Turning Feral: A Modern Journey of Hunting, Trapping, and Living Intentionally in the Wilderness https://a.co/d/9S3YtmP Zach Hanson on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/letmedielearning/?ref=badge%20target%3D  Short Description: Zach Hanson joins me to chat about his book Turning Feral as well as his journey from a career in AI tech to hunting.
