


Born in Rawalpindi in 1942, playwright and author Swadesh Deepak made Ambala his home. He lived there until 2006, when one day he stepped out of his house for a walk and never returned. His play “Court Martial” is said to have had over 5000 shows across the country and yet Deepak shunned fame. Battling Bipolar disorder he stepped away for treatment, keeping little contact with the outside world. His return to the world of letters was momentous with an autobiographical account of his illness, , and the play S. He went on to win the 2004 Sahitya Akademi Award. Much has been written about Manto. In his times, he was perhaps talked about more than his written works. Dragged into court, condemned by the custodians of culture, ridiculed by the scholars of “serious literature”, Manto lived and wrote as he pleased. He was asked why he wrote and he replied with a honest and witty article, “Main afsana kyunkar likhta hun”. Then he one upped himself by writing a critique of the article and of himself as a writer. --------------------------- Manto was incorrigible! Nothing could make him stop writing about the world as he saw it for as long as he lived. Not six court cases of obscenity, not the partition of his beloved nation and the difficult decision to move to Pakistan, not the abject poverty that drove him to near homelessness, not the bid of well-wishers to admit him to a mental asylum (meant to cure alcoholism). He lived till he wrote and then when he was told he couldn’t write anymore, he died. What he wrote about were taboo subjects, how he wrote them was taboo too. Qurratulain Hyder was one of the most influential and successful progressive writers post Independence. She was bilingual, writing and translating in both Urdu and English. Her literary life was rich as a novelist and a short story writer, an academic, and a journalist. Her magnum opus, ‘Aag Ka Dariya’ is her best known work. The women in her stories live layered lives often in gray areas between theoretical morality and unforgiving reality. She was born in Aligarh into a literary family and completed her education there. She then studied at Indraprastha College in Delhi and moved to Pakistan in 1947. A new kind of Hindi writing emerged post-independence approximately from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. The subjects that writers focussed on came from a newly independent, rapidly urbanizing and industrializing India. The narratives dealt with problems between the sexes, especially with the emergence of the working woman and the scenarios mirrored the difficulties of everyday negotiations of life and work. Mannu Bhadari was one of the pioneers of this “Nayi Kahani movement”. Shrilal Shukla, one of the greatest satirists in Hindi language was a Jnanpith awardee. A civil servant in his day job, Shukla had an upclose view of bureaucracy as well as the systemic rot that plagues it. I have to confess that for a long time I associated Premchand’s writing with a kind of morose sentimentality. How and why that thought anchored itself in my head I have no clue, but it was no doubt a result of my ignorance. I “discovered” Premchand in the last few years and am glad to be proven wrong. His writing has the depth and breadth that few other authors can claim. His observations are sharp, his humour sparkling and even the minor characters in his writing become unforgettable. And then there’s his personal life- his commitment to progressive writing, the relationship he shared with his writer wife- Shivrani, his commitment to his art. I keep adding to the list. It was a personal tragedy that propelled Mulk Raj Anand into a writing career. His first essay was in response to the suicide of an aunt excommunicated by her family for sharing a meal with a Muslim woman. It is the rigidity of the caste system and the deplorable condition that the poor of the country live in that became his literary preoccupation for the rest of his life. Known as India's Charles Dickens, Mulk Raj Anand, along with R. K Narayan is credited for having brought Indian English writing to International readers. One of the founding members of Progressive Writers Association, Mulk Raj Anand remained committed to the cause of Indian independence, writing propaganda materials while living in London. What would two great writers from history talk about if they were to meet? We may not find that out, but when one translates the works of the other, what is evident is a sense of common concern, a shared worldview and a hat tip to the greatness of the other. When Premchand translated works of Leo Tolstoy, he didn’t just use his vast and rich vocabulary to retell the great Russian’s work in Hindustani, he took the story and drew its essence in a way that the story became Indian. Incidentally, if you listen carefully you’ll recognize another work or two that may have been inspired by the original. राजिंदर सिंह बेदी ने गरम कोट, निकोलाई गोगोल की कहानी, ओवरकोट से प्रभावित हो कर लिखी, और फिर उसी कहानी को और आगे बढ़ाया जब उन्होंने फिल्म का स्क्रीनप्ले लिखा। जहाँ गोगोल की कहानी मूलतः एक ऐसे आदमी की है जो एक ओवरकोट बनवाने की ख्वाइश रखता है, बेदी की कहानी, गरम कोट बन जाती है एक ऐसी दम्पति की कहानी, जिसे ज़िन्दगी की “सस्ती सी खुशियां” तो मयस्सर नहीं , लेकिन जिनके बीच अनकहा प्यार धड़कता है। ----- Rajinder Singh Bedi adapted Nikolai Gogol’s short story, The Overcoat into Garam Coat and then further wrote a screenplay for a film by the same name. In his adaptation, Bedi moved quite far from the original, only taking the coat as a leitmotif. While Gogol’s story revolves around a man’s desire for a new coat, Garam Coat, the short story is a poignant story of a man who struggles between his own needs and his longing to fulfill his family’s desires. The movie version, starring Balraj Sahani goes a few steps further and explores the ups and downs in the protagonist’s married life. ----- Rajinder Singh Bedi was a pillar of the Progressive Writers Movement. After the partition he moved to Bombay where he made his mark as a dialogue writer, screenplay writer and director.
