BRAWL! Senate Shenanigans; 10 Fwy Symbolic Failure; Can You Afford Thanksgiving Karel Cast #278 A fight almost breaks out on the Senate floor and Bernie Sanders breaks it up. Many are calling it demeaning, unprecedented…but it's not, actually. We take a trip down memory lane to see just how violent the Congress really is and has been. And you'll be shocked. The 10 freeway in Los Angeles is closed for almost two months downtown because of an arsonist. This shows just how flimsy our national infrastructure really is. One fire, one overpass, a whole city crippled for two months? And we're proud of our achievements? The Farm Bureau says you can feed 10 people for $65 this thanksgiving. Are they insane? That won't even cover the trimmings. How are you adjusting your Thanksgiving based on the current cost of groceries? Watch on YouTube and listen wherever you get your podcast. As the war to eradicate Hamas continues, the world holds its breath. No one—except Iran, China, and Russia—wants Hamas to survive, but the way Israel is going about rooting them out has many people, Jews included, wondering why Israel didn’t take the time to build world sympathy for the plight of its civilians, and cobble together Western allies, if not for military aid, then for emotional support. There’s a lot to be said for the moral high ground. We take a look at all this today. I hope you’ll listen.

A Warning from Babs Karel Cast #277 Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets all over the world this weekend, but do they really, truly know what they want? And what they are protesting? They carry the flag of a country that does not exist, they chant things that mean eradicate a country, but do they even have a clue. Or are they just happy to be on the other side of something? The holidays are here, and the Blues are real. So how do you avoid them, or deal with them once they arrive? Well, I’ve got a few steps and tips as a fellow sufferer myself. And Babe, in her new book My Name is Barbra, says one small line about not being happy. And she said it in an interview, too. LISTEN NOW Neither Dems nor GOP Won; Black Friday an Insult; Babs Rules Karel Cast #276 Elections happened yesterday and today everyone is talking about how Democrats won, GOP won, Democrats Lost, GOP Lost, making it like a contact sport of sorts. But they are not the ones winning or losing. I'll tell you who is, and who is really in power. Black Friday is now a season, not just a day. Why? And for all the great deals, I find it…insulting. Why? Well just look at what it has become. It's not the Hunger Games of shopping, and the wealthy just love watching us fight over .86 cent TVs. Is there a solution? And the memoir I've waited a lifetime to read is now here. Barbra Streisand has released her life story in her words. What celebrities inspired you? Which ones spoke to you in some way? Republicans in Congress are clawing each other’s eyes out as the void between the relatively sane and the clinically unhinged widens and deepens. Today, we look at this dysfunctional family feud. Tighten your chin straps because it gets pretty raucous (and kind of funny) in there. I hope you’ll listen.
Wealth is a word that gets thrown around a lot, especially in economic conversations and spaces. The most basic definition is what you own minus what you owe. But as Aisha Nyandoro—CEO of Springboard to Opportunity and architect of the Magnolia Mother’s Trust—argues in her recent Tedx Talk, it’s time to redefine wealth in the United States. In her words, “for too long, we have allowed financial institutions to define wealth and the process by which we buildi it.” So for this week’s episode of Off-Kilter, Rebecca sat back down Aisha for a far-ranging conversation about how we define wealth and why it matters; Aisha’s own journey to answer the question of what wealth means to her; how the women who are part of the Magnolia Mother’s Trust answer that question; the relationship between wealth and liberation; how guaranteed minimum income can be part of the path to building a society where everyone has access to true wealth; money and spirituality; and more.
Responding to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and too many others, millions marched in 2020 to protest police brutality. Though Floyd’s killers faced charges and were found guilty, we learned that it remains extremely difficult to hold police accountable. Decisions of the Supreme Court, state and local governments, and policy makers have made them all but untouchable. In SHIELDED, UCLA law professor JOANNA SCHWARTZ shares the stories of victims, exposes the ways in which our legal system protects police, reveals the weakness of their justifications, and calls for sustained citizen engagement to make change.
Next time on The State of Belief: close to 25% of Americans believe political violence may be called for in our country. That’s just one of the disturbing findings in the 2023 American Values Survey from the Public Religion Research Institute. PRRI President Dr. Robert P. Jones will be here with the details. Also, Righting the American Dream: How the Media Mainstreamed Reagan’s Evangelical Vision. That’s the title of Diane Winston’s latest book, and it tells the story that predicted the evangelical veneration of – and vote for - Donald Trump a generation later.

EXPLOSIVE If Polls Are Right, Worry About THIS; Plus Hate Crimes In LBC Karel Cast #275 The polls in battleground states show Trump leading. If that is true, and if he wins, then it's not him you should be worrying about so on this edition of Kitchen Table Talk we discuss the real issue you should be pondering. And actually giving credence to it. Will it be time for drastic measures? Then, two friends of mine in Long Beach, CA had a hate crime perpetrated against them. And the fact is, these are going up, not down. Should the LGBTQ community consider an exodus, and if so, where? Are they considering one now? Would you? Do you have any idea how violated they feel after this? And tomorrow is my birthday. Do you like birthdays? Would you prefer people skip them? Are they just another day? Leslie is joined by Scott Paul, President of the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), a partnership established by some of America’s leading manufacturers and the United Steelworkers union. The two examine what is now the most equitable economic recovery in American history. First, they break down data from a new Treasury Department report, which provides "new evidence that the recovery from the economic harm of the COVID-19 pandemic was the most equitable recovery in recent history. The report – which includes new Department research alongside new data released by the Federal Reserve Board – finds that the speed and strength of the response by the Biden-Harris Administration helped to thwart the worst economic outcomes anticipated from the COVID shock for Black and Hispanic families, and that, across a broad array of economic indicators, the financial well-being of Black and Hispanic families have remained strong relative to recoveries in recent history." (Link here: https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy1834) Second, they discuss a Twitter thread on what 'Bidenomics' is, and how it's going two years into the Biden administration. The data rich thread was posted by Heather Boushey, a Member of the Council of Economic Advisers & Chief Economist for the President's Invest in America Cabinet. (Link here: https://twitter.com/hboushey46/status/1715711474994422140) Finally, Leslie and Scott talk about why President Biden isn't getting more credit in the polls for the strong economic recovery that has happened under his leadership. This includes a Bloomberg article from Matthew Yglesias examining that exact topic. (Link here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/10/22/biden-s-economy-is-great-everywhere-except-in-the-polls/d6bae722-70d6-11ee-936d-7a16ee667359_story.html) For over 16 years, Scott Paul and AAM have worked to make American manufacturing a top-of-mind issue for voters and our national leaders through effective advocacy, innovative research, and a savvy public relations strategy. Their website is www.AmericanManufacturing.org and their Twitter handle is @KeepItMadeInUSA. Scott's handle is @ScottPaulAAM.
MUST LISTEN: Israel Losing PR War; Is Rescuing Animals a Crime? Karel Cast #274 Israel has bombed refugee camps in what some are calling War Crimes. Gaza is seeing horrifying casualties. Israel blames Hamas, no releasing hostages, still firing missiles, hiding amongst civilians. But when does the world say all that is true, but you're wiping out thousands of civilians and children in your quest for justice and… peace? Even President Biden has called for a humanitarian pause (a nice word for cease fire). Is this any way to conduct a war when you're the fourth largest military in the world and your opponent has sticks, rocks, and some missiles? A case in Sonoma County is questioning whether it is OK to rescue abused animals if they are in a slaughter house. There's currently a law that says if you see an abused animal, it is OK to rescue it. Should this apply to the agri-business industry as well? Is it ok to rescue animals being raised for food if they are being tortured? If not, why not? Trump's fraud trial is better than a daytime soap opera. And is just going to get better next week. Their defense? Ignorance. We just didn't know what we were signing. Well, under the law, ignorance is not an excuse to commit a crime. Will their defense prevail? Shocking Figures Don't Add Up For You; Kylie at $300? Karel Cast #273 We suck at math, and that's not an accident. Because if most of us really paid attention to the Math of America we would see how the numbers add up for a very few, and actually work against you every single day. You won't believe how much you have to earn now to have a house, anywhere in the USA and how few of you earn that number. Plus, Kylie is coming to Vegas this week. And you can stand and watch her for….$300. That's right. If you want to sit, $550. She's worth $120 million dollars and the hotel company she's working for is worth over $26b dollars, with a b. Americans STOP Criticizing #Israel Look In Mirror; Plus How are You Coping Karel Cast #272 Israel has made mistakes in Gaza, but Hamas wants to kill them all. You can't have peace that way. But for Americans to criticize Israel is rich indeed. We live in the ultimate example of occupied territory. We came here, removed the indigenous people, put them in the worst places (like Gaza and West Bank), don't give them a real say in our government and don't share our resources. We do not give them back any of their land en masse, we tortured them, killed them, committed Genocide against them. The same with African Americans. We stole them from their homeland, sold them like cattle, made them live in squalor and then enjoyed the benefits of their work without sharing any of it with them. If Americans want to act sanctimonious when it comes to how Israel should treat Palestinians they had best first look in the mirror and assess how they as a people, how we as a people, treat those who this land originally belonged to: Mexicans and native Americans. Until then, they should politely STFU. Also on Kitchen Table Talk, how, without yelling, preaching, or screaming can I get you to be more plant based? What suggestions do you have for someone like me that wants to inspire you to be healthier, and help the planet? And, what sacrifices are you making because of food prices right now?
