The book of Lamentations, although a part of OT prophetic books, is not actually a book that tells about prophecy. Instead, it is a compilation of poetic writings that serves as a reflection to a prophecy fulfilled - the destruction of Jerusalem, God’s Holy City. The very first chapter invites us to take a tour and see for ourselves the devastation of this once glorious city now turned into rubble. The old covenant in Exodus was made between God and those who had not previously known him. In Jeremiah, the new (renewed) covenant was given to those who had already known God but sinned against him. Both the old covenant (in Exodus) and the renewed covenant (in Jeremiah) contain a promise of forgiveness to those who would live in obedience. Whether a person had not yet known God, or has turned away from him but wanted to return, there is also this promise of forgiveness to those who repent. God’s judgment has fallen upon Judah. The first batch of exiles were already deported to Babylon. Is this the end for God’s people? The false prophets say, “NO! This exile will only last a couple of years!” Jeremiah writes, “Lies! You will stay there for seventy years.” Why would God punish His people so harshly? Has God finally forsaken His rotten people? People have a tendency to abandon the Lord in difficult times, which is not a wise thing to do. Reality is: God’s people experience more temptation to abandon the Lord because people who don’t belong to God don't need to "abandon" Him; after all, they don’t belong to Him in the first place.
