They will discuss the latest research and personal insights into this important area of study and how it affects your health and well-being. You'll learn how an overactive immune response within the brain can lead to conditions like brain fog and long-term fatigue. Their conversation will cover factors that contribute to brain inflammation, including gut health, sleep quality, movement, and connection. They will also discuss practical lifestyle changes that can help reduce inflammation and improve overall brain function. In addition, they will explore • The effects of glial priming, • The connection between chronic conditions and brain health, • Ways to address subconscious resistance to lifestyle changes, • How stress plays into chronic brain dysfunction and illness, • And simple tips for reducing brain inflammation, plus much more. Through her research and experience she developed an effective system to unlock the five core root causes so that people who are too exhausted to function, can start feeling like themselves again. Her secret power is her ability to combine a very left-brain functional medical approach with deep subconscious work. This allows powerful shifts in both the physical and energetic bodies. She is a licensed Naturopathic Physician/primary doctor, a sought-after adjunct clinical faculty member, and has run her successful private practice in Portland, Oregon. “Dr Jenny,”  as she is lovingly called by her patients and students, holds a BA in Political Sociology from Evergreen State College. One Expert's Favorite Ways to Rebalance Your Body and Mind

Tonight, we welcome back Roberta Mittman L.Ac, CNC, PLLC, a renowned alternative healthcare practitioner and wellness coach. In this informative conversation, Roberta shares two favorite ways to realign your body and mind toward wellness and balance. First, we chat about acupuncture, a traditional Chinese method utilized to relieve a variety of health issues and symptoms, such as stress or pain. While the exact mechanism behind how it works is not yet entirely understood, there is evidence that it can impact the nervous and other bodily systems and acupuncture has been shown to have a calming effect. How to Embrace Your HSP Sensitivity as a Superpower with Breakthrough Energy Expert Linda Binns

Did you know that being a highly sensitive person can be a superpower? It means you're more in tune with your surroundings, like people's moods, voices, and body language. Do you quickly pick up on the needs and feelings of others? Do you become easily overwhelmed by sensory input such as a beep-beep-beep repetitive sound, bright lights, and or strong smells? Or do subtle changes in your environment affect you more than most? Maybe you’ve been called ‘too sensitive’ more than once (or twice)... At least 20% (1/5th) of the population is considered highly sensitive. So, you are not alone. This week, we welcome Linda Binns, Breakthrough Energy Expert, and HSP Expert, to share the latest research and her own survivor-to-thriver experiences as a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). Linda is an accomplished energy and HSP coach and author of seven self-help books, including the wonderful VALUE ME!: Advantages of Being a Highly Sensitive Professional.
Along with her research, personal learnings, and coping strategies, Linda also shares • Simple ‘grounding’ techniques to enhance health and reduce stress • How to incorporate and appreciate your uniqueness as an HSP • Strategies to welcome your sensitivity into your everyday life • How to share with others what you need and be open to receive And more including, it’s okay to be a highly sensitive person!
MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST: Linda Binns describes herself as an introverted, intuitive, and highly sensitive person who became a small business owner, author, international speaker, radio and television guest, consultant, and coach. Her childhood experiences left her unprepared to face life’s challenges. She felt inadequate and different from everybody else - like an outsider. Many times, she struggled with relationships (both personally and professionally) until she discovered the right tools. Little by little, her confidence increased. While her experiences in various careers in the corporate world were invaluable, she didn’t find fulfillment there. In 1997, she started her own energy coaching and consulting practice. Now, her greatest joy is to share and discover with you just how you can achieve the highest levels of success and fulfillment in your personal and professional life. Her goal is to guide you to thrive in your personal and professional life. Learn more at www.LindaBinns.com NOTE: While HSP itself is not an autoimmune condition, it is common for individuals with HSP to have autoimmune tendencies. Psychologist Elaine Aron coined the term highly sensitive person (HSP) to describe those with extra-sensitivity to various stimuli, and HSP varies from individual to individual. HSP is also known as people with sensory processing sensitivity. Sensory processing sensitivity is not considered an illness or diagnosis by Aron and other researchers. Instead, it is viewed as an evolved personality trait that can be advantageous in certain circumstances. Those with a highly sensitive nature often exhibit an enhanced ability to sense potential dangers and subtle social cues that others might miss. A highly sensitive person (HSP) is more aware of their surroundings, such as smells, sounds, the emotions of others, and even the 'energy of the room.' This 'superpower' also makes them prone to overstimulation, fatigue, burnout, and exhaustion. * Your host and guest are neither a doctor nor a medical professional. Reduce Chronic Pain in as Little as 15 Minutes a Day?

That’s just one of the questions we ask tonight’s guest, an expert in the field of clinical pain research, Dr. Afton Hassett, PsyD. She is the author of the new book
As a chronic pain researcher, Dr. Hassett noticed while studying established treatments for chronic pain and developing new approaches that exciting research discoveries rarely reach those who could benefit the most. Chronic pain affects nearly 50 million people in the U.S. alone. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that new cases of chronic pain occur even more frequently than new cases of diabetes, hypertension, and depression. Just like autoimmune, chronic, or long-term pain affects all areas of one’s life, that’s why Dr. Hassett promotes a multipronged approach to pain self-management.
Research shows that simple, at-home changes, including effective and easy-to-implement habits such as paced breathing, easy sleep hacks, mindful walking, and even acts of kindness and gratitude, have been shown to reduce pain. Dr. Hassett shares with us a broader definition of chronic pain and how to implement several of her ’30-Days’ activities and strategies, including:
 • How a pink Piggy Bank can change outcomes – yes, a real piggy bank… • How the medical community defines chronic pain and how it relates to autoimmune conditions such as fibromyalgia and arthritis • What neuroscience is now telling us about how our brain relates to pain • How using the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy reduces long-term pain • Why doing simple activities that you enjoy and make life feel worth living is an excellent way to decrease pain, plus much more…
ABOUT OUR GUEST: Viewed as a leader in the field of chronic pain and resilience, Dr. Afton L. Hassett, PsyD, is an Associate Professor and Director of Pain and Opioid Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan. She is a principal investigator at the Chronic Pain & Fatigue Research Center with research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She was the Keynote address at the 2023 Pain Consortium Symposium on Advances in Pain Research for the NIH. Dr. Hassett and her book Chronic Pain Reset brings evidence-based strategies from research and academic medical settings directly to people who live with chronic pain with the hope that they will gain new tools to lead more rewarding lives with less pain. Health and Antiracism: Finding and Caring for Our Activist Selves with Sarah Peyton

Join us for an enlightening conversation with Sarah Peyton as she shares her latest work, , co-authored with Roxy Manning, Ph.D. Throughout my years of hosting The Autoimmune Hour, we've emphasized the importance of self-agency and self-advocacy, yet we've never really talked about how to be of service to those who may face obstacles due to systemic issues like racism and ableism. According to Pew Research, "Less access to quality medical care is the top reason Black Americans see contributing to generally worse health outcomes for Black people in the U.S." (link below). It's crucial to acknowledge that everyone deserves equal care and respect, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, ability, or life choices. In this episode, we discuss how to become more aware of • our implicit bias and unconscious tendencies, • how to accompany our self-discovery with self-compassion, • discovering ‘Do no harm’ vows and releasing unconscious contracts, • recognizing and addressing racism and ableism and microaggressions, and more. Our goal is to prioritize the health and well-being of all individuals by working towards a genuinely anti-racist world, including in healthcare. This is the first of two conversations with Sarah, and next month, Roxy Manning, Ph.D., will join us to discuss how to be empowered to identify what kind of antiracist conversation they want to have—for example, do they only want to be heard, or do they want to negotiate a change in policy? MORE ABOUT TONIGHT'S GUEST: Sarah Peyton, Certified Trainer of Nonviolent Communication and neuroscience educator, integrates brain science and the use of resonant language to awaken and sustain self compassion, particularly in the face of such difficult issues like self-condemnation, self-disgust and self-sabotage. She teaches and lectures internationally and is the author of the book series. Why You Need To Know Your Perception Style Now with Lynda-Ross Vega and Gary Jordan

Did you know that you are probably being misunderstood by 84% of the people you encounter... including your healthcare professionals... Maybe you’ve said more than once, “I just wished I could get them to understand, get them to listen...” This episode’s guests ask us to consider that, most likely, they are listening; it’s a mismatch of perception styles that keeps you from being understood. Understanding the six perception styles and how perception works can ease miscommunication and help you recognize your and their innate strengths. Our guests, Clinical Psychologist Gary Jordan and Coach Lynda-Ross Vega, authors of the new book ‘Unlock the Power of Your Perception: Claim Your Natural Strengths, Reframe Your Weaknesses, Reshape Your Most Important Relationships’ share with us loads of easy communication and relationship 'hacks.' Just some of the great 'hacks' and questions answered by Lynda-Ross and Gary answered are • What are the common misconceptions about perception styles? • Is there a link between perception style and well-being? • How knowing your perception style can improve communication with your healthcare professionals. • The impact different perception styles play in your relationships. • And if perception style changes over time or is fixed? Plus much more… ABOUT OUR GUESTS: LYNDA-ROSS VEGA, with over 35 years of experience in senior management and as a business owner/entrepreneur, Lynda-Ross is an expert at harnessing the power of perception to help individuals and organizations implement change, empower collaboration, and develop talent. Lynda-Ross began researching and applying styles theory tools early in her career. Her passion for identifying and focusing the right talent on the right task led to her collaboration with Dr. Gary Jordan, beginning in 1983, and their development of Perceptual Styles Theory™. GARY JORDAN, PH.D., has over 40 years of experience in clinical psychology, behavioral assessment, individual development, and coaching. He earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology-Berkeley in 1980. Always fascinated by theories about types and styles, Gary found none of the theories he studied integrated internal experience with observable behavior. Beginning with his doctoral dissertation and continuing through his years in private practice, he worked to create a practical, usable style theory based on perception. In 1983 he joined forces with Lynda-Ross Vega, and together they created Perceptual Style Theory™. This revolutionary psychological assessment system provides the answers for people to tap into their natural strengths and find more meaning and satisfaction in life. Gary is an expert at helping people understand themselves and using that awareness to align their actions with their natural potential. The Importance of Eye Care When You Have An Autoimmune with Ophthalmic Surgeon Dr. Jovi Bopari

So my attention was piqued when I was asked recently, “We brush our teeth and moisturize our skin daily, but what do we do for our eyes?” I had to be honest and say I hadn’t really thought about it... I do know that Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus are just two autoimmune diseases that can affect your eyesight and lead to vision loss if left unchecked... so I asked my thought-provoking questioner to sit down with us and chat about eye care and autoimmune—'that questioner’ being the co-founder of MyCorneaCare.com and ophthalmic surgeon Dr. Jovi Bopari. Dr. Jovi shares simple changes that relieved him from his struggle with eye problems. And we cover a lot of eye care tips in our time together, including Dry Eye Disease and the importance of eye care even as we sleep—especially when you have an autoimmune condition. He also gives us the answers to... • When it’s just’ seasonal’ dry eye, Dry Eye Disease, or autoimmune-driven dry eyes? • Do the blue-light-blocker glasses work, and how about sunglasses? • How body inflammation, familiar to those with autoimmune, can lead to eye dryness, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, and other eye ailments, • And the surprising sleep habits we all need to protect our eyes while we sleep and much more... MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST: Ophthalmologist and Ophthalmic Surgeon Dr. Jovi Boparai is passionate about educating patients and the world about the importance of personal eye care and Dry Eye Disease. The daily habits of increased screen time for work and personal use, seasonal allergies, contact lens use, and notable side effects of several oral medications have led to a rise in Dry Eye Disease. It’s estimated that between 16 million and 49 million Americans have dry eyes. Now that’s not all autoimmune related, but that 16-49 million is about 5-15% of the US population.
