April 1, 2024 9AM - It's Your Business - The Remodelers Show

Blog-April 1, 2024—9-10—Remodelers Show----------    1st day of April—NO FOOLIN----we did the Remodelers Show and thanks to the work of Butch Warrington---we had our first numbers for the first quarter of the year---January thru March 2024 compared with 2023—and 2022 ---------------------------------------------------------------2022----------2023-----------2024 New Residential---------------------------------------$58.1 M-----$15.5 M-------$35.4 M New Commercial------------------------------------$275.2 M----$169.7 M------$74.4 M Res Add & Remodeling----------------------------$16.7  M-----$12.9  M------$14.0 M Comm Add & Remodeling------------------------ $26.3 M-----$72.2 M-------$35.2 M New Commercial Manufacturing------------- ----$4.3 M---- $22.3 M-------$27.7 M Office, Institutional, Educational--------------$142.1 M-----$32.4 M------$850.0 K Single Family Units------------------------------------183------------33-------------105 Townhome Units-----------------------------------------68------------25---------------25 We had Butch lead the discussion with the help of Todd Boots—Former State Building Association President, Steve Swenson, Handyman, Joel Ingle-President of Home Builders and Teddi Mueller—Executive Director of the Home Builders. It gave us a chance to talk about the May 11th Parade of homes---70 home will be available to see----and we’ll continue to point to that time—when people can visit in Sioux Falls and across our area. It’s something people can learn about trends—opportunities---and perhaps get their questions answered. All on the panel seemed to agree that there is “Optimism,” back in the market and people are making the adjustments to cost.  Steve was able to talk about trends at Handyman—what people are seeing what they want including the choice to have the open showers versus the tubs. To each his own—but it is nice to visit with Mr. Swenson each month about what is available ---and what people are picking out. Todd---remembers the days at SD State President of the Home Builders Association---but he is still looking to help people in 2024 and 2025. Good ideas----well-versed---and smart in styles as well. No Brent Adney this week—but we expect him next week for the Report Card Show. Kelly-Kelly and her husband Dave Kelly—talked the financials. Kelly was sharing the Heckham—those that 55+ or 62+---and what they should look at and how it makes sense to know what works---opportunities that give you choices----and get yourself prepared for a little later in life. With Brent Away---Dave—share interest rates---some say 6% others thinking 6 ½%--but the best bet is to look-talk----and plan your own direction. Both the Remodelers Show and the Report Card Show—talks about the interest rates—and what is expected. Tony Bachman---Coldwell Banker is the consistent part of the Remodelers and Report Card Shows each year. We get some facts and figures---and the President’s of the Home Builders and the Realtors—get a consistent friend to visit with during our Remodelers and Report Card Show each month.  We talked about the new listings that came out and in March---and looked ahead to April, May and June.  Among the facts: Foreclosures are still low when looking at pre-pandemic by 25% Mortgage rate projections think 30 year rates could be in the high 5% range More Economists are projecting a soft landing when it comes to a recession from 2023. 39% predicted no recession and in January 2024--% are predicting no recession Low unemployment rates nationally below 4% and locally we are at or just below 2% Many home owners are sitting on a tremendous amount of equity, 39% own their home free and clear, and 29% have over 50% equity in their homes.  Consumer confidence is good—only  in 5 people think prices are going to fall. On an average, homes appreciated about 4 to 6% in 2023.       The Remodelers and Report Card Show—provide the most expertise in two hour long shows each month. It’s a show we have done for more than a decade----and we get high marks for having current leadership---to discuss the topics each month.    Listen live at 1320, 105.1, 107.9—use the KELO App—Streaming on Line or just ask Alexa. Norm Anderson will have the show available as a podcast –generally by noon or within 24 hours. This 9-10 Show---is first on---and first on the website.    Use these notes as a guideline to what is on the show----and who are the leaders sharing what they know.     Questions for me—feel free to call/text at 605-728-2455 (BILL) or email me at bill.zortman@mwcradio.com.  See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

March 29, 2024 9AM - It's Your Business with Bill Zortman

Blog---March 29, 2024—9-10—It’s YOUR Business—    Our It’s YOUR Business Friday---yes the LAST FRIDAY of March---gave us a lot of great story lines to follow.    Jodi Schwan---Sioux Falls Business---      Late breaking—Chuck e Cheese--- open in Sioux Falls since 2001---announced Saturday will be there last day. As Jodi shared---they may be looking at another City location at a later time.     Jodi and I were able to visit about the Biggest Announcement for Avera this week. We both covered the story in ways that was good for those counting on us.      Yes it will be completed by 2026---the announcement by Metro Area that we had reached 300,000 made this event timely. Not only Sioux Falls but across a number of states----yes more workers and professionals needed and Dr. Ron Place—Regional President and CEO for Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center---did a full follow-up with us in a 9:20 interview.      Rural areas are looking forward to it----more help will be needed---and we encourage those looking at the medical profession to take note of opportunities that are ahead.      Jessie Schmidt—BBB of South Dakota updated the eclipse’s path of totality set for April 8th. Jessie warned to make sure you are dealing with businesses you can trust. She shared a number of tips if you’re planning eclipse-related activities.       If you do—celebrating a unique event like this with a crowd can be fun. If you are looking for an event or a viewing party----BBB says do your research first. Know the time the eclipse is happening in your area Check venues for special instructions like admission fees, and parking options.  Be sure to bring your eclipse glasses or other viewing props.       Experts warn that looking at it without protection could cause eye damage—so read up and be sure your glasses are safe.       9:32---we followed the Sioux Falls Prayer Breakfast that drew more than a thousand---got here early so I could attend—listen and then do the interview in our show.        John Lynch and Shannon Nordstrom—joined us in the studio----and on this Black Friday----we talked about Mr. Lynch----quite the left-handed baseball pitcher with an Arizona College team---who lost his ability to throw---and turned to curb painting----and to many other past-times. But as he shared with the audience---he found the Lord---took awhile for him to identify----and we talked about what he did---how he showed up at seminary----and he felt the Lord answered. Today he travels the country and has been to Sioux Falls on several occasions.    It was good for us to hear---and good for me as a reporter to see the emotions and reactions to the people in the audience.    You’ll want to listen and perhaps it can help you today, tomorrow and in the next world.     Joe Batcheller—Downtown Sioux Falls shared a number of events for this weekend---Remedy Brewing Company’s Oktoberfest, SD Festival of Books, Northern Plains Art Market, Reception for the 437 Project      Just a few of the events—and our listeners tell us they want to include a list each Friday---and thanks to Joe’s team we do that.      Diana Patterson—Sanford Careers went looking today for RN’s and LPN’s.       Norm Anderson---will have the blog/podcast available today—go to the KELO-AM website—look for It’s YOUR Business---March 29, 2024—9-10—use these notes as a guide to what’s in the show---and where to find it.      Questions for us---feel free to call-text me at 605-728-2455 (BILL) or email me at bill.zortman@mwcradio.com. March 26, 2024 9AM - It's Your Business with Bill Zortman

Blog-March 26, 2024—9-10—It’s YOUR Business     Quite the show this morning----with those in the news—answering our journalistic questions on where we are---what are we doing—and where are we going?     We started with Casey Crabtree who kept us posted during the legislative session---and today---was a clean-up day. Casey described the year—more than once as “Smooth Session procedural.”     What they are doing today---they would normally work on any vetoes---what I have seen reported is that there weren’t any. Set the Executive Study Summer topics---and look ahead to the coming year.     For Mr. Crabtree we asked about the next session in 2025---he said if the House will vote him in---he’ll be back again—and he seems excited about that. Family of course is asked----but we’ll follow along if indeed that happens.     The Leader saw if as education and health care and the economy was stronger----the veto day had no business.     We did talk with Casey about all those he serves---including what we are calling on our show “My Little Country Towns”----Mr. Crabtree has been willing when he had to pull over along the roadside—or step out of meetings to keep our audience informed----we tried to ask questions our audience cared about—regardless of which side of the fence we perceived him to be on. The winners were those in our audience—knowing as much as they could from people just having a very important conversation.     Right behind Mr. Crabtree—Congressman Dusty Johnson—yes South Dakotas only Representative. He was making stops in Sioux Falls---and the area on Easter Week---- we posed a lot of questions that involved the farm bill---how are we going to help those in ag---what is happening in congress---yes the border-------and what people are asking him. We do get a chance to see him interact with his family---how do they feel about his travels—what he is doing for them—for us---and yes South Dakota. Pipeline we talked about---and how he is getting so much television time in 2024. He answered all of them.     Iowa’s Ag Secretary—Mike Naig on Monday---announced they are watching closely the USDA’s Detection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza could be in Iowa. Kansas and Texas have identified in dairy herds…and the USDA Diagnostic Lab is keeping track.     Iowa is watching-----and our discussion today was with the Iowa State Veterinarian—Dr. Jeff Kaisand. We talked openly about why South Dakota and Minnesota aren’t following along as much as Iowa is. What should we be aware of---we know that in 2022 poultry was an Avian concern---migratory birds as well.   Specific question---and I got a specific answer---what about the safety of our dairy products that come from Iowa----that were circled as perhaps having ties to Texas and Kansas? Dr. Kaisand—said they are working extensively daily with the USDA Diagnostic Lab---and they vow to let us—their communities---and cattle growers know what they are hearing ASAP.    We expect to hear from the Ag Secretary---by Friday of this week—and we will keep a close eye on it.    Last segment dealt with events coming to South Dakota---between now and September 1st. In our area—the Guardians will be in concert in Sioux Falls April 12th. They have the sound of the Oak Ridge Boys---and Suzie—shared with us musical examples. The minute the music hit the air---the phones started ringing and Norm –took the 2nd and 3rd callers. Among the clips—Heaven is Happening, Come on in Medley, and he Grew the Tree. We had two winners with more winners to come later this week and into April.    Candi Briley---SD State Fair gave us some updates on the events between now and the State Fair Music on September 1. We will continue to follow along with their announcements as well as those from the Sioux Empire Fair.    Our It’s YOUR Agri Business Show-and on occasions—this show—will keep you posted with our elected and appointed representatives---topics that are healthy and not so------this Ag set---fit well—just before the monthly SD Farm Bureau Show which runs on the 4th Tuesday of each month.    Norm Anderson will post the show as a podcast—by noon on the day the show runs live. In this case it’s the March 26, 2024-9-10—It’s YOUR Business Show.     I’ll have the updates as part of the blogs---in time for Norm to put on line. In this case---if you need follow-up—feel free to call at 605-728-BILL or email me at bill.zortman@mwcradio.com.  See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

March 25, 2024 9AM - It's Your Business with Bill Zortman

Blog-May 25, 2024—9-10—It’s YOUR Business    Our It’s YOUR Business Monday—mixed the approaching tax deadline, the snow and water that hit our area-with Laura Edwards SD State Climatologist and Eric Pauli---Excel Energy.    Gary Popkes----Plains Commerce Bank---looked at the calendar---three weeks away from the April 15th Tax Season and talked us thru some important stuff to get what you owe or are getting back---down the road to the US Government.    We did learn that unlike most years the April 15th date is final this year.     What options do we have to reduce our ax burden/improve our tax situation?    His thought ask your financial advisor----and you an ask your financial advisor----for what can help you with the 2023 tax year---and what to plan for in this year of 2024.    We wanted to know the kind of questions he has been getting---and the kind of advise he has been sharing. We did ask for programs that he recommends—and ones to  avoid.     Being an election year the landscape shakes a little with different thoughts and staying close to Gary---can help you those troubling or at least confusing times.     Eric Pauli—Excel Energy joined us---with the snow storm and heavy rain---and more to come this week.     Among the suggestions –customers can access the most recent updates about an outage using the My Xcel Energy Mobile app or visit the Xcel Energy outage map which displays the number of customers out and the anticipated restoration time.     Lower the thermostat to between 65 and 70 degrees while they are home and 58 degrees when away. A programmable thermostat or smart thermostat can automatically lower the temp based on daily routine.     Opening drapes and blinds to maximize heat from direct sunlight---running ceiling fans in a clockwise direction to push warm air down the ceiling.     Changing out dirty furnace filters to promote better airflow and reduce the energy the furnace uses.          To stay safe—keep natural gas meters clear to avoid a dangerous buildup of pressure in gas-lines---use space heaters carefully.      Build a home emergency kit to use in he event of a power outage---and handle food safely in the event of a power outage.       9:32----we talked Tyler Tordsen—who is a lawmaker and also leads Sioux Metro—a collection of 16 or so communities working together-and just last week some received state-wide awards.      Tyler Tordsen---shared some of the several smaller Sioux Falls-area Cities getting a major boost to keep their future growth plans –suddenly Congressional Approval with a $23.6 million wastewater system for the Minnehaha County Communities.       The Metro Growth Alliance officials after taking a bus tour---shared the importance of not being able afford it individually----but when you combine Crooks, Colton, Lyons--- expected to join Hartford that broke ground last fall for a very importance wastewater treatment facility.        We’ll keep a close eye on this project---and we thank Tyler Tordsen who has been helping along with being a member of the 2024---Legislative Session.        We closed the 9:00 hour with Suzie Cromwell with Corvex Productions---who on April 12th will bring a special group similar to the Oak Ridge Boys—to the Sioux Falls First Church—6300 W 41st for a 7PM concert.       The Guardians---have a similar Oak Ridge Boys gospel message sound----and it’s their first time in South Dakota.       Corvex Productions has been bringing music to this region for 20 years----and we’ll be giving some tickets away between now and April 12th.       Our It’s YOUR Business Show looks to communities, businesses, and opportunities to jump in and help.       Norm Anderson will podcast the show in time for listening later today. Go to the KELO-AM Website—look for It as the March 25, 2024-9-10 show.       Use these blog notes from me (yes Bill Zortman) at 605-728-2455 or email me at bill.zortman@mwcradio.com.  See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

March 22, 2024 9AM - It's Your Business with Bill Zortman

Blog—March 22, 2024—9-10—It’s YOUR Business    Sometimes the schedule we have for our guests in our It’s YOUR Business Shows have to be changed.    Perfect example in this show----because these are busy people.    It was Jessie Schmidt---BBB of South Dakota ---usually second guest was first this morning---    We talked about tips for choosing a password manager. Security experts –we learned—recommend creating a Quique strong password for every online account you create. But that’s easier said than done. Many people admit to using the same password across all their accounts, while others keep passwords written down at their desks.    As Jessie pointed out—neither option is secure when it comes to keeping your accounts safe. This is where a password manager is useful. Password managers keep powerful passwords for all your accounts stored in a “vault” that you can access with a single master password.     Jessie suggested asking friends and family members what password manager they use and yes—how they like it. Make a list of potential password managers to research and get started by reading as many reviews as possible.      Also consider what devices you use. Some password managers only support certain types of devices, so make sure the one you choose can be used across all the devices you need it on.     If you are not use to having to use a password—you feel you can’t trust—to do banking business or some other important account----don’t be afraid to ask questions and make sure you get some help before you get lost---or wind up giving away what your passwords are to someone that is scamming you.    Regardless go with good customer service. You want to be able to reach out to customer service right away, preferably by phone or chat. You can test out password managers with a free trial. Yes compared paid and free versions.     Kip Rounds—SD Game Fish and Parks joining us to talk about habit and conservation----the CRP program----and how we can help our young people get engaged with the great outdoors.      Teri Schmidt---who works the Chamber side of helping us-----talked about the importance of working together to help events like the Pheasant and Quail Fest that brought in 3514 or so guests—which set a new record. We are all looking to the future and know that to have Teri—Kip Rounds---and Jared Wiklund in our corner we might be able to make 2027 work for Sioux Falls Again.     Jodi Schwan---normally opens the show but she was breaking news---we talked about the Porch Swing Store---who got some serious notoriety on the Price is Right. Property Tax Valuations and taxes---which she has included on line---Hyvee—Glimpse into the future-----Expanding Growth Plans for Sanitary Sewer Conditions---and yes some start-up Sioux Falls projects to watch in 2024.     Steve Livermore----working with Mike Costanzo---sharing a big event 9-5 on Saturday—9-3 on Sunday----with Dakota Territory Gun Manager Steve Livermore. We talked about the importance of kids and outdoors----and what this show can give you on the weekend. You don’t want to miss it. Great event---and we were happy to help promote it.     Joe Batcheller---Downtown Sioux Falls gave us quite the list of events downtown this weekend and beyond.    We should be very proud of what Downtown Sioux Falls does----and you can go on-line and get an hour by hour—day by day list of what you can do---and yes why you would want to do it. He mentioned BingWood Grain—puzzle race----and more----no shortage of stuff to do.     We heard from John Gaskins on SDSU-Iowa State NCAA Men’s game last night—SDSU Women who play today—and reviewed the State Tournament play that ended last weekend. Good list---good athletes----and you should have no shortage of what you can watch this weekend and beyond.    Jimmy Ohlander—Sioux Falls Hockey—just one game in town his weekend with Lincoln as the Stampede holds onto the 5th and final playoff slot. Playoffs not far away and I’m sure this group of talented young skaters can make us all proud.     We closed the show with Diana Patterson---Sanford Career Opportunities---something we do each week. Check the blog and podcast for more.     Listen live to the show at 1320-105.1, 107.9—use the KELO App—Streaming on line –or just ask Alexa. Norm Anderson will post the podcast.     Look for the March 22, 2024---9-10 show. Questions for me—feel free to call tell at 605-728-2455 ---email me at bill.zortman@mwcradio.com. March 20, 2024 9AM - It's Your Business - Working on Wellness Wednesday

Blog-March 20, 2024—9-10—Working on Wellness Wednesday    The guest list that we have had for a Working on Wellness Wednesday show is interesting to not only us---but to our listeners.     Avera—Sanford----State Health Directors----one-on-one chiropractic care---and what use to be Sioux Falls is now----State-wide---with Working on Wellness---and those that often want to give up.     Today---Dr. Christpher Hurley---MD—Gastroenterologist with the Avera Medical Group talk to us about concerns people have on colon cancer. How common is it---who is at risk---when do you need to start getting a colonoscopy---and how old can you be---what are the signs and symptoms---and can a colonoscopy be lifesaving.      My wife Carolyn was a colonoscopy nurse for a number of years---and I hear from time to time just how good a nurse she was.     Dr. Hurley added that this morning.     If it hadn’t been for Carolyn---I might not be here today---she convinced me to do a colonoscopy---and I took it from there –and in my radio show---the Doctor decided we could go from my start of the procedure –with a radio-play-by-play on what I was doing—what I had to take---pictures were taken of me lying in my patient room----no pictures during the procedure—but after.      We were told that 300+ people took the cue from me and got a colonoscopy---we did interviews before the procedure in our studio----and then days after. When I followed up 5 years later we were plugged in again.     Today as I looked at the fact that generally those 70 or 75 can usually do get a colonoscopy—that perhaps with me being just over the age—if I should get a procedure. We may do that ---my physician would have to be clued in----and if its needed ---we could be ready for another live-saving event. Stayed tuned---but if you need a colonoscopy ----get it you don’t want colon cancer—but check your family history.     Mary Michaels—AARP may her first visit in a month---we covered the ABC’s or sorts for what she is doing.    Get Your Bike Ready to ride---it’s almost bike season—and AARP South Dakota and Falls Area Bicyclists want to get you and your bike ready for the season with monthly group rides April 20-May 18-June 15.  Yes bike safety is a big deal---they have event information and links to register on their website at www.aarp.org/sd     Electric bikes will soon be allowed in Sioux Falls on the trails---the City Council passed an amendment allowing class II electric bikes onto City trails. The bikes can travel up  TO speeds of 20 mph with throttle and pedal assistance. Class III e-bikes can do 28 miles per hour—are still prohibited—as are electric scooters and other motorized vehicles.    Also---Alarm Alerts—Peer to Peer Scams    Payment apps like Venmo or CashApp to split a bill or send money to a friend and some people even use them for traditional shopping. However there are inherent risks that exist that everyone should know about and keep aware.    Dr. Allen Unruh introduced us to Joyce Liebrow---who has been seeing Dr. Unruh since May 16 of last year---he got a hug. As she said she had no more pain and her knee felt fantastic. Her knee was bone on bone—had injections for four years and in 2021 only had one injection. She was scheduled for a total knee replacement---her sister had an amputation and the phantom nerve pain was so terrible she was screaming. Her death certificate said she died of an overdose.     Joyce loves to walk and exercise replacement—until she called the Unruh office. 25% of the adult population has a bad knee—every pound a person is overweight is 4 lbs on the knee.      What we heard was how it has worked—what she is doing—and how happy she is to be on the mend. We’ll check with her again in 3 months to see how she is doing.     We closed the show with an update on the HELP LINE with Wendy Dooley---     Among the topics---celebrating volunteers next month at our Spirit of Volunteerism on Thursday April 18th . Tickets are available at helplinecenter.org/sva.     Our It’s YOUR Business Show does care about health care----and so do those that talk with us.     Listen live to our show at 1320, 105.1, 107.9---use the KELO App---streaming on line---or just ask Alexa.     Norm Anderson will have the show online as a PODCAST—close to noon today—go to the KELO-AM Website—look for It’s YOUR Business—March 20, 2024-9-10.      The blog—I will write—use these notes to find out who and what is in the show. March 19, 2024 10AM - It's Your Business - Leader of the Band Show

Blog—The Leader of the Band Show-10-11---March 19, 2024   The Leader of the Band Show with the travels we made to Scottsdale, Arizona to receive the National Farmers Union –Ag Show-Reporting Award award—moved to the 10:00 hour with topics that including Ag with Walt Bones---Legislative Session with Tony Venhuizen----the Sioux Empire Livestock Show with Brooke Hendrickx and how Sioux Falls did with the 2024 Legislative Session with Mitch Rave.    Walt Bones---former SD Ag Secretary---explained as I did---that we all are working together for our agriculture friends. Walt was able to talk about the value of Protecting SD Ag’s Future Coalition---what he is doing—    Whether it is Agriculture or Business—there are always multiple sides----our shows carry both sides of the coin. It’s not easy---but we are finding there are more and more people listening when Walt talks as well as those in Pierre---Will Mortenson and Casey Crabtree to be exact.     Where it goes from here---we’ll see----as I did explain—I’ve been working with Rob Larew—President of the National Farmers Union and Zippy Duval—President of the American Farm Bureau. They will be discussing issues on our ag shows in the future. We hope to do the same with the local Farm Bureau---and the South Dakota Farmers Union.     Tony Venhuizen---explained the work he did as part of the legislative session—particularly the issue of teachers pay---what will happen and when----and the importance of education being put on the step that is really important. Mr. Venhuizen explain other issues---how the session went----and the hopes we all have for the future.     Brooke Hendrickx—SF Chamber---explained the final numbers for the 2024 Sioux Empire Livestock Show. The dollars that were paid out were amazing—and what events are straight ahead. Sioux Falls even though our facilities are going to need some help for the future—is still rolling out the red carpet for those that come from all over the country—and often walk away with money that would surprise you. We are fortunate to have Brooke----and we’ll be working with her again in the near future—with the Sioux Empire Fair—moving closely to in our view for August.    We talked as well with Mitch Rave---who was in his first year as our Chamber Rep in Pierre. He discussed some of the topics like the airport---and other subjects that made the session interesting. Mitch follows in the footsteps of his dad Tim---taking care of business—and working for tomorrow.    Our Leader of the Band Show is fortunate to have Scott Lawrence—the Leader of the Band who this year is serving as Chair of the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce. It takes 5 years to go up the chairs---and we have watched and admired the work that Mr. Lawrence has done for all of us. March 18, 2024 10AM - It's Your Agri Business with Bill Zortman

Blog—March 18, 2024—10-11—It’s YOUR AG Business   It’s AG WEEK Officially in Iowa---so we mixed and matched to start the week with Dwight Mogler with Iowa Pork and Adam Krause---who serves as President of South Dakota Pork.   It was quite the story—talking about the hopes of pork in both states---and the help those raisers need at a time that dollars are truly important to that industry.    Mr. Mogler just lives across the border in Northwest Iowa---but he has been a long-time friend—between Mogs and Krause---they gave us some insights as to where we are –and why it is so important---that we eat the best pork at Crawford’s in Downtown Sioux Falls in their pork month as well as the ham that can be so perfect for so many at Easter.     Mr. Krause and his wife Taylor live in Clear Lake---she is an Ag Ed Teacher at Deuel HIS -and is active helping with FFA and 4 & H—and yes they teach Sunday School and Adam is on the trustees Committee for their church.     Not to be anonymous he speaks thru Social Media with programs and platforms important to ag.    Both shared tough time stories---with the hopes that particularly with Easter ahead—many of us will think of a ham for the family event. We’ll talk more with both of them on Friday.    Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig joins us to talk what he is working on Wednesday.    Congressman Dusty Johnson joined us as well this morning. We talked about the important document on Capital Hill for so many right now---“The Farm Bill”The Farm Bill”The Farm Bill.    Dusty is in state and I had a chance to visit with the Congressman and one of his hard-working handlers for lunch on Friday.    We’ll talk more with him this week about what he sees—and what his hopes for the rest of this session---in a truly tough election year.    Brent Baloun---Plains Commerce Bank gave us a few more tips on PLANNING. They do a lot for people in both rural and city areas----to not get caught short. Something we have done with our friends from Plains Commerce Bank for a number of years.     Sarah Heinrich---KFGO –Growing Harvest Network---gave us some updates as well. Yes our friends from Fargo---were part of the crowd I traveled with to the National Farmers Union Convention last week---in Arizona. You’ll hear more from them and other neighboring states this week.    Matt Swenson---Swenson Commodities shared the morning numbers—something all in agriculture really need a little help with.    Scott Vanderwall—South Dakota Farm Bureau President for 20 or so years joined us to talk about what he sees during National Ag Week that began today and runs thru Friday. Of course Ag is South Dakota’s #1 Industry—contributing $33 Billion dollars annually to the economy and it accounts for almost 30% of South Dakota’s Total Economic Output. We’ll hear more from them this week.    Bryson Patterson---SBA of South Dakota—talked to us about the small business skills trainings coming up this week—many are virtual on Wednesday March 20th---including Lisa Classen ---SBA District Office---the business opportunity specialist for a free, on-line webinar to dive deeper into small business government.     Bryson shares why the government wants to buy from small businesses for reasons---    Including to ensure that small businesses are getting a fair share of the fed market and not being left behind by larger businesses, to gain access to new ideas that small businesses provide, to support small businesses as engines of Economic Development and job creation.     We’ll share more on Wednesday.    Rock Nelson had the Rock Report—as he does on Monday’s –he talked with Chelsea Limoges—Director of Industry Engagement at USD, Beacom School of Business---    We heard about the SD Trade Association’s Seminar in Rapid City this past week—and what the businesses gained in knowledge for their day-long attendance.     Among the topics ----Overview of International Trade and Midwest US Exports ----Overview of International Negotiation Skills ----International Trade Financial Instruments ----Managing the International Negotiation Process    Our It’s YOUR Ag Business show—is available live at 1320, 105.1, 107.9—use the KELO App—Streaming on Line of just ask Alexa.    Norm Anderson posts the podcast on KELO-AM Website---look for the 10-11 show on March 18, 2024.    Questions for me about this blog—feel free to call-text at 605-728-BILL or email me at bill.zortman@mwcradio.com.  See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

March 18, 2024 9AM - It's Your Business with Bill Zortman

Blog-March 18, 2024-9-10---It’s YOUR Business    Our It’s Your Business Show—had a chance to catch up on a lot of events—this Monday-----and story lines were truly interesting.    Tony Bachman---who helps us with the Report Card Show every month—did a little updating for this morning---as we are 18 days into March.     New listings in February up 38%     Pending Sales are up 64%     Closed Sales are up 20%     Inventory of Homes for Sale up 11%     As Tony was sharing—realtors are seeing many homes going under contract within days and in some cases, dual offers. The price point that is selling the quickest is $200-$250,000—buyers and sellers have come to terms with interest rates that are currently around 6 1/4% comped to around 8% in October.      As Tony reported—both buyers and sellers seem to be optimistic a bout what the next 9 months of 2024 hold—as they look at acting.      Tony as well talked about the news that broke last Friday about the National Association of Realtors Settlement. Agents as Tony put it, are still all working on details on how to adapt to the news. Quoting Tony---the main thing I would say is that buyers and sellers still need real estate pros to guide them thru the process. In a nutshell—the main takeaway is that as of July 2024—the new rule will be prohibiting seller compensation on the MLS for buyers agents; sellers can offer buyers concessions on MLS as concessions for buyers’ closing costs. Tony shared that they will be talking about this with their  buyers and sellers so they have clear understanding by July.     The settlement stems from long-standing lawsuit alleging that NAR policies stifled competition by restricting how real estate agents COULD SHARE commission information with buyers. Now with the settlement in place those restrictions are removed---meaning more transparency and, hopefully, a more level playing field for everyone involved.       We’ll follow along as we do our Report Card and Remodelers Shows----in the days and weeks ahead.      One of the things we did see this morning was that a friend of ours-State Senator Brent Hoffman announced he will not seek re-election to the State Senate---he served City Council and School Board and does not rule out running in the future.       One of those lawmakers we did visit with this morning was Tyler Tordsen---and also works with 16 communities---in the Sioux Metro Growth Alliance. Tyler answered my question how does 1 lawmaker serve the needs of 16 area communities?  It could well be the look to the legislative future.    Tyler has been part of our show---as we talk about what happening in these 16 communities—in essence is just as important as what we see in Sioux Falls. And to Sioux Falls—the labor force that can and does come from those 16 communities is becoming MORE AND MORE IMPORTANT!!    They are now looking at a community for the first time is outside of South Dakota—in Minnesota. It’s an important change---and we’ll watch Rock County Closely.      9:32---we talked with Mr. Purple Heart---who like Senator Hoffman has decided not to run for Re-election. Ken Teunissen—did talk to us about a Ceremony last Thursday to commemorate the granting of a congressional charter to the National American Indiana Veterans. For years Native American vets have been pushing to have a voice in Washington—and Thursday SD Senator Mike Rounds gave it to them with the in a ceremony commemorating the granting of a congressional charter to the National American Veterans.    For years—Native American vets have been pushing to have a voice in DC—The Senator gave it to them with new congressional charter—and it is official.     As Purple Heart shared—they didn’t have any representation anywhere in the US, but there’s over 440,000 of them with no representation and Purple Heart says that’s just not right.        It was not an easy road with many people pushing hard to have a congressional charter for Native Americans vets. That changed with the signing of the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, which some members of Congress—including Senator Rounds were working to establish. 20 years later it has.      Purple Heart share the big milestone that is.    We closed the show with Marshal Selberg---who is completing his 8th year as a City Councilman in Sioux Falls---we talked to him about what he has seen in the 8 years---and the concern some people have that 2 of those that will get Council Seats don’t have any opposition. We’ll keep a close eye on the situation.     Marshall and I have worked together as real estate agents---and this past November we did a Nov-em-burn event with the Police Chief and a numbers of others raising some funds for those affected by thoughts of suicide and much more. We posed helping spread the Nov-em-burn—State-wide and we are hearing that South Dakota Farmers Union is going to work on that this year------thanks to the work of Jeff Kippley.      Our It’s YOUR Business Show is available—live at 1320, 105.1, 107.9—use the KELO App—Streaming on line—or just ask Alexa.      Norm Anderson will have this show posted as a podcast by noon today—go to the KELO-AM Website and look for It’s YOUR Business-the March 18, 2024-9-10 Show—and use these notes ---from me Bill Zortman---as a guide to what is in the show and where to find it. Questions for me—feel free to call/text at 605-728-2455 (BILL) or email me at bill.zortman@mwcradio.com.        See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

March 15, 2024 10AM - It's Your Agri Business with Bill Zortman

Blog-March 15, 2024-10-11-It’s YOUR Agri Business    Including in this Blog---its our regular show—just before St. Patrick’s Day ---and the presentation that the National Farmers Union made to me as The Milton Hakel Award for Excellence in Agricultural Journalism. The award was presented in Scottsdale, Arizona---before-400-500 or maybe more.    SD Farmers Union President Doug Sombke introduced me----and then I shared 9 minutes of why this was important----and what we could do to take Agriculture reporting and sharing to the next level.    I never had a national award in 55 years of Broadcasting which included farm reporting since the 1970’s as well as news and all other.    Before my segment—the National President of Farmers Union Rob Larew took my questions----which shared how Farmers Union and Farm Bureau’s Zippy Duval do work together---and will be doing even more in the weeks and months ahead. I was the first to ask them to both join me on my Ag Shows---so we can help and be among the first to know about the progress.    My stories including reporting for WGN in Wheat Fields in the Texas Panhandle---didn’t mention the tractor-cade to Washington—but I was part of that----but we did talk about a song my dad wrote---and later performed by Lawrence Welk’s Orchestra----“My Little Country Town”. I did a short version for the audience---and have been working now to find a way to let all those in agriculture—share stories of “My (Own) Little Country Town”.    Can’t wait to do that in several states.    For other stories—you’ll just need to listen how I was able to save Selma-Montgomery Alabama---with the Bloody Sunday March—now 60 years ago---and the thank you I got was not only from Mayor Joe Smitherman in Selma---but the Retirement System of Alabama—who asked me and I accepted to become one of the original share holders for Raycom Media’s purchase of 40 TV Stations—radio properties and newspapers. They sent me everywhere—and I was happy to help the teachers retirement plan.    Darren Hefty—Ag PHD talked to us about the dry conditions the look to the future---and how he does his National Sirius 147 Radio Show that plays all over the country.    Gerri Eide—FFA of South Dakota—that was a part of my address to the convention got to talk about what she does—how she helps to pass the torch to the next generation.    Matt Swenson –Swenson Commodities had the morning farm numbers---Danita Murray—SD Corn talked about the dry conditions—and the need to keep pushing for Farm Bill—Farm Bill---etc.    Jaime Wood SBA of South Dakota shared these notes with us having just came back from Kansas City SBA HQ and Office of Field Operations leaders gathered in Kansas City this week to share ideas and information on how SBA resources and programs are implemented to support small businesses across the U.S. and territories. 68 district offices Success of the SBA Community Navigator Pilot Program, started in May 2021, with the goal of bringing business support to underserved entrepreneurs. March 6, 2024 9AM - It's Your Business - Working on Wellness Wednesday

BLOG-MARCH 6, 2024-9-10—WORKING ON WELLNESS WEDNESDAY   LOTS TO TALK ABOUT IN THIS SHOW---WHICH ALSO INCLUDED SOME UPDATES FROM PIERRE ON THE FINAL ISSUES IN THIS 2024 LEGISLATIVE SESSION.     ON THE MEDICAL SIDE---DR. JOSHUA JORDE—EXPLAINED THAT HIS WIFE WANTED HIM TO TALK ABOUT THE FACT SHE WAS HAVING JAW TROUBLES---AND THAT DR. JORDE IS ABLE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH HER AND OTHERS.     AS DR. JORDE POINTED OUT HE HAD SOME HESITATION BECAUSE JAWS ARE KIND OF TOUGH TO WORK ON----THEY’RE VERY COMPLEX, PRETTY DELICATE IN A LOT WAYS AND HAVE SO MANY FACTORS TO CONSIDER AND ALL OF THAT LEADS INTO A SITUATION WHERE THEY’RE ALMOST NEVER AMAZING MIRACULOUS RECOVERIES---     BUT WITH DR. JORDE HE HAS FOUND A WAY TO MAKE IT WORK---AND WHILE THE DENTAL PROFESSION WORK ON JAWS IS OFTEN LIMITED TO INVASIVE PROCEDURES AND SURGERY—THEY’RE AT A LOSS WHEN A PATIENCE COMES IN WITH SOMETHING MORE MILD.      AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO CHIROPRACTORS TO HAVE A DENTIST OR A SHORT LIST OF THEM TO REFER TO BECAUSE THEY SEE A LOT OF HEADACHE CASES AND ITS NOT UNCOMMON FOR THOSE TO STEM FROM TEETH ISSUES—ESPECIALLY ALIGNMENTS.      DR. JORDE DOES –AND HIS SEGMENT EXPLAINED HOW HE DID IT TODAY.      MARY MICHAELS---AARP SHARED SOME OF THE BULLETIN MATERIAL TODAY ---THAT SHE HELPS WITH IN SOUTH DAKOTA. IT’S NATIONAL CONSUMER PROTECTION WEEK---AARP RECEIVES A PACKAGE OF CONTENT FROM THE AARP FRAUD WATCH NETWORK THAT THEY MAKE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR USE AS YOU DEVELOP STORIES.      THE FIRST FULL WEEK OF MARCH IS NATIONAL CONSUMER PROTECTION WEEK. THE AARP FRAUD WATCH NETWORK IS TEAMING UP WITH THE FTC AND OTHER PARTNERS TO HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING HOW TO SPOT A SCAM. NATIONAL SLAM THE SCAM DAY IS MARCH 7TH THIS YEAR.       DR. ALLEN UNRUH---TALKED WITH TAMMY FROM ROCK VALLEY ABOUT THE LOW BACK PAIN RADIATING DOWN HER LEFT LEG. HER HUSBAND HAD TAKEN HER TO ER—AND SHE WAS GIVEN AN IV AND FENTANYL, VALIUM AND SEVERAL OTHER MEDS. SHE WAS USING A WHEELCHAIR AND WAS LIMPING WHEN SHE CAME IN. HER MRI SHOWED BULGING DISCS---IT HAD BOTHERED HER MONTHS---AND SHE DESCRIBED IT AS NUMBNESS, TINGLING, RIGHTNESS, ACHING, AND SHOOTING PAIN. PAIN WAS SOMETIMES A 15 ON A SCALE OF 1-10.       SHE HAD A HISTORY OF SEIZURES, CONFUSION, TREMORS, WEAKNESS, WITH MEMORY LOSS, DIZZINESS—EVEN SWALLOWING DIFFICULTIES.       SHE WENT THRU THE THERAPY PROGRAM WITH SOUND WAVE THERAPY, PULSED—ELECTRO-MAGNETIC THERAPY AND THE BACK ON TRAC WHICH DISTRACTS THE DISCS. HER WHOLE COUNTENANCE HAS IMPROVED DRAMATICALLY AS WELL AS LEASE ON LIFE.      WE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT TAMMY—AND WE’VE ASKED HER TO JOIN US IN THE THREE MONTHS.      WENDY DOOLEY---WORKS ON STRESS WITH THE HELP-LINE—SHE DIDN’T GET THE FULL TIME TO VISIT WITH US ---BECAUSE OF MID-WEEK MEETING SHE WAS IN---BUT SHARED HOW THEY HELP---AND WHAT IS TOTALLY IMPORTANT. WENDY HELPS US---AND IS AN INSPIRATION TO OUR LISTENERS.      WE ALSO HAD A CHANCE TO VISIT WITH TODD EPP---HE IS IN PIERRE—WHERE PIPELINE NEWS WAS BEING MADE. HIS UPDATE TOLD US WHERE WE WERE—WHAT TO EXPECT---AND THE HOPES THEY HAVE FOR WHICH WAY OR WHAT PART OF THE PIPELINE COULD BE APPROVED.      OUR IT’S YOUR BUSINESS—WORKING ON WELLNESS SHOW—BUT COVER THE MEDICAL NEWS—THE BREAKING NEWS—GIVING OUR AUDIENCE A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF WELLNESS EXAMPLES.      LISTEN LIVE AT 1320, 105.1, 107.9---USE THE KELO APP OR STREAMING ON LINE.      NORM ANDERSON –POSTS THE PODCAST---OF THIS SHOW—9-10—MARCH 6, 2024.      THIS BLOG IS INCLUDED ON WHAT WAS IN THE SHOW—WHERE TO FIND IT—AND HOW TO BEST FOLLOW ALONG.      QUESTIONS FOR ME—FEEL FREE –CALL/TEXT AT 605-728-2455  (BILL)---YES BILL ZORTMAN—WE WORK ON WHAT’S IMPORTANT MEDICALLY ON WEDNESDAY---AND THESE NOTES HELP YOU FIND WHAT WE DISCUSSED IN THIS ILLNESS-WELLNESS SHOW.
